We compare the new for 2021 300cc dual sport models from Honda and Kawasaki. Despite the price tags below $6000 and relatively small displacement motors, they are surprisingly capable bikes. But which one is better? We spent time in the hills and trails to answer those questions for you here.

I have the KLX-300 Dual Sport in Camo Gray and really love it. I really like the Honda too and don;'t think you can go too wrong with either bike. The Honda is more "modern" in design and its instrumentation BUT the KLX is old-school in a good way: a no nonsense play bike/workhorse with better handling, suspension, and arguably motor. A few mods will really make both bikes shine. Good review!

@@johnr7365 When we talk about top market bikes there're no best nor worst one but the right owner for the right bike. I personally prefer the Kawasaki because of the very low maintenance costs that NO one has mentioned here but I also don't know about Honda. Both engines are different, the Kawasaki has more torque starting from the mid range RPMs and up so it's more speedy on roads while the Honda has the torque at low and mid range. The only thing that I really hate about the Kawasaki is that pity very small gas tank that doesn't make any sense, the bike averages 130 Km/s range with a full tank excluding the reserve.
@billadmond9450
@billadmond9450 Жыл бұрын
@@johnr7365 Indeed both great bikes, the Honda is for a more relaxed ride and what I like about it is the torque at lower RPMs and the bigger gas tank. But what I can't find is a comparison regarding the scheduled services and the maintenance costs. The Kawasaki has services I think every 13K Kms.

I got this bike so if I was camping in the mountains up a trail of some sort and needed to run to a town for anything I would be leagal. I agree one hundred percent with your review. I had anticipated that the KLX would win. The suspension is the CRF's weak spot and part of the factor keeping the bike cheap. Suspension is modifiable but costs money and can be somewhat complicated. That sorta defeats the purpose of buying an economical dual sport bike. You want and hope it does all from factory. I actually like the older design of the KLX. Thank you so much for the review. Very insightful indeed.

I'm cracking up laughing at the comments section. Reading what other people think about which one is better doesn't tell you which is better for your situation. Someone else's dyno test or for that matter the resulting graph and numbers doesn't tell you about the quality or usability of the power delivery for your use and situation. That one commenter who insisted Kaws are junk and Hondas are impervious to wear and mishap is just unfoundedly biased, and has the absolute right to be. This review reflects the opinions of these journalists, not absolute fact covering every future or potential owner, (and they prove themselves excellent moto journalists by allowing for that, so their opinion offers real value and balanced understanding of the products reviewed and the market intended,) but you need to realize that if the Honda fits your situation better than the Kaw, or vice/versa, then that's the bike that wins for your situation. Period. There are going to be people who swear these aren't real dirt bikes anyway or they're too small for adventuring or any other variation of my [censored] is bigger than your [censored] that fails to account for the fact that either bike fits a current real market in their own right. And btw, the klx is, in point of fact, a "real" dirt bike from circa 1990 that just happened to have been converted for street legal use thirty years ago. So are the thousands of legendary XRs people are still taking out to the desert and trails thirty years later also not "real" dirt bikes anymore? 'Cause the klx was their competitive peer when they first hit the scene and the CRF might have a little less pedigree and softer springy things, but it holds closely in every comparison so far and I dare someone to argue with itchyboots that the crf isn't a real adventure bike. Some prefer red. Some prefer green. People have different target uses in mind, or different terrain or environment; different fabrication skills or budgets for upgrades. Some will be newbies looking for a first bike. Some will be old ex racers looking for something a lot less serious to play with the kids. Some will just want a milk-getter to strap to the front of their RVs. How can any reviewer or journalist be expected to write for each of those potential owners individually? How can any opinionated commenter be the one with the only correct opinion? If you are seriously in the market for this class of simple, reliable, relatively cheap on-road/off-road bike, think hard about what you need; what you like and buy either one with the confidence that you're getting what you want. That really is the only person you have to agree with and the only person who has to agree with you. In this one rarified instance, you are in fact correct no matter which would be your choice. Maybe just don't try so hard to be so damned serious. Dirt bikes are supposed to be fun! My correct, biased opinion? I haven't had a dirt bike in thirty years and I keep drooling with fond green memories as my teens are showing interest now, so Moo, bitches. Moo. 🐄

The honda has a lower seat height but has more ground clearance. The Honda for the same price has ABS. If you don't want ABS use the 350 .00 to get a upgrade rear shock . The honda as a 3.4 gallon tank on the rally that can be added to the regular 300l . The Honda has a fuel gauge so you know how much gas you have left in the tank. The dash Is way more advanced with thinks like fuel economy and miles to empty ,rpm and what gear your in . . Honda also has the slipper clutch . Just add the 350.00 rear shock to the Honda and your years ahead of the klx.
@tg8150
@tg8150 Жыл бұрын
What about the cheapo forks? Why upgrade the rear shock (which btw will cost way more than $350) and not the forks. The Honda is a slug- the KLX is not fast yet it outruns the CRF. This tells me the Honda is really slow and has even less power than the anemic Kawi. They’re both cheap trail bikes, but the Kawi is more bike for your money. Yes it’s dated, but it’s not THAT dated.

I love everything about the Kawasaki, especially in the camo version; however, the Honda has a fuel gauge and gear indicator, both great quality of life features, neither are needed but nice to have. The Honda, due to my weight would need an immediate suspension upgrade and from what I am reading/watching online and on KZfaq, it would appear that is nearly true for everyone that is over 150 pounds. The Kawasaki would likely need a suspension upgrade as well but maybe not as soon and/or the KLX's suspension does not need upgrading unless you are over 200/220 pounds.

Hey man - completely new to dirt bikes but coming from a few cruiser motorcycles. I'm wanting the KLX-300 SE for just some simple round town and trail riding. Nothing crazy at all. I'm 260 lbs. Again, not racing or anything, just cruising some trails.

@@steeldriver1776 - I am about the same weight as you with at least 40 pounds of it being from Covid years. It is really my own fault for not at least going for walks tho. Suspension work is somewhat cheap from what I found but it does make the bike more expensive overall. There is another channel (MotorcyclesOffroad) and the guy owns many different bikes - his current two rides that get the most use are a CRF300L and a Tenere 700, he reviews the KLX300 as well since a friend of his has one. He likes the KLX but it seems the Honda is a superior bike outside of the suspension. I was thinking about a DRZ400 but it's super outdated and he has a great video on that in comparison to how the little CRF feels over the top-heavy DRZ. You should check out his videos for sure! I personally am pretty well sold on the Honda, even though a coworker is trying to talk me into a bigger bike with more power. The issue is I have two modes, cruise and enjoy life or balls out till death. I prefer to keep living and know how I can be so a little 300 is perfect. Edit: I've been trying to get something since summer 2019 and Covid killed that, hopefully, it is possible this summer but in all honesty with the war and prices rising, I may have to look at the used marker for something much older. I just want to ride!

Great comparison. I think the Honda has a slight Edge on pavement due to the better top end with the longer stroke and a little bit smoother motor. However, the Kawasaki definitely beats it hands down off road due to the suspension and bigger bore. Both are really insufficient in power for any serious road travel which takes away the Hondas slight Edge completely unly ABS is a must for you. Both need lower gearing if you plan to ride any difficult off-road trails at higher altitudes due to the performance loss at altitude of the already underpowered motors.

The KLX's suspension is so vastly superior to that of the CRF. Comparing the suspension of both these bikes, is like comparing a Ferrari to a Nissan Micra. Its not ever close. KLX300 is not sold in the UK though, so CRF300L it is for me. Still a good bike but needs significant suspension upgrades to be ridden aggressively off-road.

Thing is, I have seen so many youtubers have done comparisons between the two, and yes they agree that the suspension isnt as good as the KLX. But most people say the Honda is the better bike. I do not own either of these bikes, so what I wrote is unbiased and is what I agree with. One last thing, is that the KLX just doesnt look the part. Like I would be fine sacrificing some performance to have my bike look good. You can always change the suspension and add aftermarket parts to both of these bikes, with the best ones being an aftermarket exhaust, different sprocket size, and an EJK.

@cyclenews
@cyclenews 3 жыл бұрын
In our opinion, the stock Honda shock/forks would still not be great with modification due to the lack of remote reservoir and compression/rebound adjustment. An aftermarket rear shock is in the $800 range and you would also need to upgrade the forks for another couple hundred bucks. That would put the Honda on par with the Kawasaki. As some other people have said, if you are going to modify the suspension on either bike, then the better stock suspension may not be that big of a deal but they are better components that could be modified versus buying a completely new shock for the Honda.

@@cyclenews Thanks for the reply. I'm a long term rider and currently ride a 2010 DR650. I've previously owned a 1992 DR350S (which I liked a lot) and a 2009 KLX250S (liked the suspension but was disappointed by the low bottom-end power) as well as a number of other bikes. I'm looking for a new low maintenance dual sport for primarily trail use (forest service roads, twin track and easy single track; I don't ride super aggressively). The FSRs and trails range from about 10 to 130 km away from where I live. The DR650 is fine on the highway, FSRs and easy trails, but I want a smaller, lighter dual sport for the rougher stuff. The CRF300L appeals to me the most except for the suspension (I haven't ridden either bike, though). I was just wondering if the CRF300L with a new shock and fork springs would be a much better bike than a stock KLX300 or would they just be about equal, all things considered. At least from a performance perspective you seem to be of the opinion that the bikes would be evenly matched if the Honda's suspension was upgraded. I guess for the type of riding I intend to do, the KLX300 would be the better option (rather than buying the Honda and paying $1000 to upgrade the suspension). Thanks again.

I've always thought the KLX was better than the Honda, on paper. But Honda will sell way more of the CRF's, and the aftermarket will support the CRF much better because of that. Try finding a 3 gallon tank for the Kawi... probably won't be one, but IMS and Acerbis will offer one for the CRF in a couple months. Same with exhaust systems, EFI setups, etc. You'll just be able to do more with the Honda, even though the Kawi is probably the superior bike in stock trim.

With mods, CRF will be a superior bike. U can always change the suspension but u cant change the ergonomics (unless you're highly skilled and you're able to afford it) I havent seen one person who didnt customized their dual sports, no matter the model or manufacturer. So while i agree that kawasaki is better performance wise in stock form, the fact is that customized CRFs will always be better. It really depends what u need. Kawi can be a bike u can take on an adventure right outta gate but it comes in expense of looks, ergos and slightly higher price. Kawi is a better weekend rider while honda is a better Long term motorcycle cuz of how customizable it will be, especially in the suspension department. If something is popular but has a flaw that many people notice, they usually try to Fix it in higher numbers thus we can expect better suspension kits from the aftermarket side for honda rather than kawi which doesnt need many upgrades which in the end will make the CRF a more capable bike in the next 2-3 yrs. Same situation like when MT07 came to the market MT07 had better ergonomics, much more fun engine and better looks that its competitiors while also being more affordable but lacked in the suspension department. Because it was so beloved tho, dozens of businesses started to manufacture better suspensions, exhausts and Accesorries for it. It will probably be the same with honda considering how much more popular it is compared to the klx300
