62 yrs young here. Just drove 410 miles round trip to deal with the awesome people at On The Edge Honda in Amherst, Ohio to pick up a new 2021 CRF450RL....oh man what a bike. I had ordered a CRF300L in January and my dealer said it may arrive May then June and now July. I said screw it and payed to play! stepped up to the only available 450RL within 600 miles of me. Took me back to the day in 1981 when I walked into Midway Yamaha at 22 yrs. old and bought a brand new YZ465H 2 stroke! Happy Riding!

I'm looking at the 300L and the 450RL. I'm 45 years old and stand 6 feet tall. Would you recommend going up to the 450? I'm not too hardcore of a rider, I just want something that I'll stay happy with power-wise. Congrats on your new bike!

@Good Citizen lol now that is awesome! You ride that CRF300L now and you'll be soooo glad you made the decision to just go full send and snatch up the CRF450RL! Not even talking power, the difference in bikes once you take them off-road and really use them - it's insane. Ride safe out there and be careful doing too many wheelies!

How many hr/ miles on it now? I’m torn between this and the wr450f.. both have plenty of power for me but looking at the specs the crf450l should go longer before a rebuild than the wr. Idk.. tho I want something that will go a LONG time and do it reliably. I’ll probably end up getting a 250 or 300 but I’m use to more power. I have a 02 cr250r 2t and it’s been a dream reliability wise, ya Wierd I know.. so I have more faith in Honda lol

Good info on the differences between the R and RL that I haven't found elsewhere. In my area, the dealers are marking up the 300L so much, and it's so hard to get one, that the 450RL is actually looking better and better.

You definitely won't be disappointed if you make the trek down to Chattanooga, just let me know and I'll get you hooked up with the guys to talk to on your next Honda and they'll take care of you ;) . Be careful on the mentions of a Wing, you ride one of those things and it's incredibly hard not to "need" one in the garage lol. I used to say I'd never own one no matter how old I got and then I rode one for the first time about 15 years ago and my mind was completely changed. It was like you put a couch on a sport bike lol and that's even more true with the latest gen bike. It's wild what they can do with an 800lb couch and making it handle well. You really have to have the time to get out and log miles to enjoy one of them though.

I was close to buying this bike, but it is not "adventure-ready" off the showroom floor. I am an adventure rider looking to replace my KLR650 with a lighter bike as I am 61 years old and enjoy playing in the hard stuff, and I want to do Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR's). Picking the KLR up fully loaded with adventure bags is tough, and I typically ride alone. The CRF300Rally saves me about 80 pounds in a dry weight comparison. Buying the 450RL would require a larger aftermarket tank, a windscreen, and possibly replace the still not quite right ECU with the Vortex aftermarket. While I read the ECU was improved in 2021, some feel that an upgrade to the Vortex ECU is still required to smooth out the burpy throttle response and low-speed stalling. That puts the 450RL with the requirements above nearly twice the cost of the 300Rally. I would love to see Honda make the 450RL is a Rally model for 2022, with 8000-mile service intervals (detune a little), and I think they would just kill it in the marketplace. I would love to hear what current 450RL and 300Rally riders think of my analysis above. See John T. Young's review of the 450L on U tube for some great adventure riding wisdom. Thanks for a great review with no music and only a few spliced in "funnys".

Totally agree. I'm in a similar situation, 58 years old, like riding the BDR's (I'll finish the WABDR this year as I had to avoid some wildfires last year) and don't want to get pinned under a heavy bike when I'm riding solo. My WR250R works well on the dirt but the pavement portions can be problematic with gear, especially on hills into the wind. The CRF450RL seems like a good option and John T. Young has done an amazing build for adventure on his. Yet, your point about the amount of farkles necessary to get the 450RL BDR worthy is spot on. For the same money, I can get a Yamaha T700 for the BDRs and keep the WR250R for the single track. Just can't abide the 450+ lbs of T700 bike weight. Tough decision. I looked hard at a Husky 701 but the issues with clutch slave cylinder, the sidestand electronics and the fuel pump are hard to swallow while paying $2.5K more for the opportunity. Being stuck under a heavy bike is only a little worse than bike failure in the middle of nowhere.

If they detune, there is no point in even having a 450 because it will have a marginal power advantage to a 300L/Rally at that point, but it will still be almost twice the price. The 450L/RL is the worst of both worlds. I have no idea why it even exists, to be honest. Even if they put a bigger fuel tank and a windscreen on it, it would still price itself out of the market. Might as well get an Africa Twin, T& or something else.

Good job Kevin, I've been watching tons of CRF450RL videos and you're the first one to mention the nutty maintenance interval. I've got the fever for a supermoto but had the CRF450RL at the the top of my list because of the enduro/street blend it brings to bare. Oh well, I don't care if this thing wants to wheelie in every gear, I'm too lazy to do all that maintenance (especially the valve clearance checks), don't trust anyone to do it for me, and don't like cruddy stock ECUs too. This guy's going from first on my list to number five or lower.
@HondaProKevin

Thanks for the kind words! I just try to bring up pieces of info that I would want to know about if the roles were reversed and that's one of those "big ones" that I think everyone should before buying. Maintenance is usually an afterthought when it comes to toy purchases like this and it can bite you quickly if you go from cross shopping a CRF300L with 8,000 mile intervals and then think to yourself that this CRF450RL has to be similar... lol! Is the maintenance worth it when comparing to other Honda models? It all depends on the person. For me, I'd choose this over the other models and not care about the maintenance difference because the performance pays off but it'll definitely be different for everyone. Thankfully we have more options now than ever, from all brands! It's definitely a good time to be motorcycle enthusiast! We just need to get this corona stuff behind us so dealers can start getting inventory again lol! If you don't mind me being nosey. What other bikes are you looking at right now?
@smc_pilot5314

@@HondaProKevin After a bunch of research and a clear lack of product availability I started leaning towards a large adventure type bike. Inventory is low and prices are very high, so I'm getting pretty disenchanted with everything I'm looking at. I looked at a Pan America Special at a dealership near me and the markup was 50%. I've seen some excellent 3rd party reviews on KZfaq and am even looking into a Fat Bob, or Fat Boy 114 to replace my HD 1200 Nightster. I can't believe I'm looking at cruisers, OMG! I took my R1 to the office last week, and will exercise my Harley to visit the doc tomorrow. No rush.

Browsed a local dealership on a whim today and found a 2021 KTM SMC 690 R. I bought the darn thing, which was delivered two hours ago. Mission complete. By the way, the valve adjustment window is every 13k miles, and the dealership said they'd do it cheap (two hours labor tops). Anyway, I'm a happy camper.

I’d be really surprised if they discontinued these in the USA. They are selling like hot cakes at my local dealer. Literally has a waiting list and they are sold before he gets them. With all the suburban growth over the years this bike is perfect if you have to ride 10-20 miles to a riding spot. No truck needed just get on the bike and ride and has outstanding reliability. I have 8,000 miles on a 19’ I bought in august of 19’ and I’d say it was the best purchase I ever made.

It's identical to the 2021, she comes in at 41.7. That's a good question... I'm not an engine builder, I know enough to get me in trouble lol. You can swap some R parts over to the RL to get the extra horsepower that they robbed back but at the risk of ruining what Honda did to make it more "streetable". To start, there is NO cush drive on this model. I'd also like to see a "Map" switch with three choices, full power, as well as two lower power maps. They could of gotten rid of the "herky jerky" power delivery on tight single track by reducing torque. Lots of riders are complaining. I have gotten used to it and it has improved greatly since the engine was broke in. After a full season riding it, I'm impressed. Would like a 3 to 4 gallon "Hondaline" accessory fuel tank offered, in titanium. They used titanium because it was less expensive than plastic! It also will never rust and is very light weight.

I don't want to say it's impossible as anything is possible with enough money or skill but that's a difficult once as the ABS is tied into the ECU and a lot more than you think so it's not just an easy swap from the CRF300L over to the CRF450RL. I'm a sportbike rider (SV650 & GSXR750) that's looking for my first supermoto/dually and I just want to make sure I make the right decision as I've never been on a dirt bike before. I usually ride backroads but wouldnt mind going offroad and trying new things
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the person and their outlook etc... With you already having fast bikes to satisfy that "itch" so-to-say and if you are fine with your new bike not being fast, I'd save the money and get the 300. However, if you want that power that puts a smile on your face when you romp on it then I would lean towards the 450. Long story short as I could type a novel about the pros and cons on one route versus the other between these two bikes, I'd say the 300 is going to be more of your relax and take it easy bike whereas the 450 will make you want to raise hell because of how capable it is lol. Hope that's of some help bud, it's definitely a difficult decision to make and I've had customers struggle over that ever since the 450 was released in 2019 and before that it was people wanting to know if the 650 was worth the extra $$ over the 300 to which I would take the 300 over any day of the week.

Thanks for the walk through of the bike! I have a yamaha wr250r and I love the bike but I'm wanting more power. I'm stuck between the crf300l and crf450rl...I've heard mixed things on that bike. Flameouts etc, tough to ride in single track. I like the crf300l, but the wr has better suspension and is lighter. 295 pounds wet and it came out in 2008 vs 310 on the crf300l. Would have liked to see more from honda on that bike. Why can't anyone make a light weight dual sport with more power than a 250 but low maintainence. Like a modern drz400, less weight, 6th gear and fuel injection. If someone made that it would sell like hotcakes or a wr450r with maintenance of 250.
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, coming from a WR250R you 100% wouldn't be happy when it comes to the performance. The CRF300L was built for more of a budget bike than a sheer performance bike if we're being honest. lol you and me both are asking the same question there as well as a ton of other people. I think it all boils down to they think it won't sell, that's why they won't do it. It has to be, right? If they think something will sell and they can rake in the profits then they'll hop right on it. This corner of the market is growing though, more than ever so we may see some new ventures out of the big guys in the field and fill some of the voids in their current lineups. Fingers crossed at least!

Then buy crf300L put light weight battery, and exhaust. Then its even lighter then WR250. Also note that it is 30% more strong low and mid range of RPM when compared to Yamaha. Even in top end 20% more torque. plus its geared better. then Yamaha. Add tune and air filter to above mentioned mods. :) and don't worry about weight and power :) it will feel even like 400 when compared to 250 on Yamaha. And Yamaha is 13+ years old from 2008 So don't thing that old suspension can outperform Hondas when fine tuned. Plus you can upgrade Hondas to what ever level you wish.

@@itsmylife4fucksake I agree with what you're saying but with that same logic you can do the same thing to a wr250r to make it even lighter ie exhaust/battery etc. Yeah the wr might be old but it was ahead of its time when it came out in 2008 with modern fuel injection and 6 gears.

I bought the 21 RL as the first dirt oriented bike I’ve really ridden in almost 40 years. I’m 63 now. I’d say that from the factory the bike’s sketchy fuel management, light switch throttle, tendency to flame out at low rpm, 2 gallon fuel tank, street oriented tires, not to mention the putt putt sound from the stock exhaust, made the bike not a lot of fun to ride on trails. Spend the money for a Vortex ECU, a nice after market exhaust, a good set of knobbys, 3 gal fuel tank, and the bike transforms into a blast on the trails! It does have a lot of power and probably not the best choice for tight single track riding, but for desert trails and wider mountain trails it works fantastic. For a dirt bike it’s pretty good for short stints on the asphalt, but it’s definitely not a great street bike. Costs some extra money to transform it into something the factory should have delivered, but unfortunately the factory is bound to ridiculous emissions requirements and noise limitations etc, on top of trying to produce a bike to fit a bunch of different applications. Buy one and make it your own based on what you need it to be and you won’t be sorry! Great bike!

Correct me if im wrong but I think the 450 is 600miles maintenance but use way less oil than the 250/300L because the oil of the transmission is separated. So 1 liter of oil each 600miles is not really annoying... and a lot of guys made it go as far as 1000miles or 1200miles and the oil color and viscosity stays very good if its a soft 1000 miles of riding (not too aggresive). And if yo are going harder just flush it at 600 miles...
