Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2021 Kia Sorento is one of them. The Kia Sorento is a not-quite midsize SUV that competes with the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and perhaps the 7-seat VW Tiguan. In this video, my wife, daughter, and test a 2021 Kia Sorento to review its positives and negatives from a family perspective.

It’s great man I recommend it. Great price for what you get in my opinion. I would say it fits a family of 4 perfect and and even if you have more people in your family it works I’m 5’7-5’8 and I can sit in the last row ok for a while ride with not much trouble and yeah knees are high but it’s not tight at all and great for kids but when you need more room you can put seats down that why I say perfect for family of 4 and even 5

@@jcabrera8425 thanks for the feedback. Yeah, it seems like it’s well thought out. It also looks high end and practical at the same time. The trim the Micah dives in this review is nicely balanced and it just being over 40,000 is a great price, these days, for all the tech and comfort. Thanks again.

Hey this is the review I asked about a few weeks ago! Awesome! Thanks for reviewing this! My favorite features are the surround and sideview cameras. Wish more cars had them or kept them (like my 2015 CRV). The dealbreaker for my wife might be the high beltline since we’re so used to the great visibility in our CRVs, she’ll probably say it’s claustrophobic. Waiting for the 2022 PHEV Sorento or a redesigned CRV (our 4th!) with hopefully an updated infotainment system.

Apart from Sorento and XC90, we also have a Honda CR-V twin-turbo-diesel with the ZF 9 speed auto, which was available in the UK until about three years ago when the UK factory stopped making CR-V's. If you are happy with the visibility of the Honda you should be equally happy with Sorento. None my family have commented or apparently noticed any particular difference. My Volvo has surround cameras but none of the others, as my Honda is a 2015 model, top of the range, and my Sorento is mid range which doesn't get this feature or head-up display in the UK. Top of the range gas ones do.

@14:26 Problem is, good luck actually finding a Telluride. If you do manage to find one, good luck not over paying for it. It was bad enough before the chip shortage, but I now I wouldn't even consider it an option. Unless of course you want to pay $40,000 for a USED LX.

It's the same size almost exactly as the Volvo XC90. I know because I have both. In Europe we have the Diesel engine which is great combined with the Wet8 DCT transmission. This is what I have and it returns an easy 34mpg US, 40mpg Imperial. In the UK it is only available in the mid trim level for some reason, which does without the pano roof, surround cameras and memory for the seats. In gas/petrol, we only get the 1.6 turbo mild-hybrid with, I believe, the plug-in hybrid coming soon.

So I went with the 2021 Kia Sorento EX X-Line (yeah, a mid year addition to the lineup) instead of a 2022 Telluride S. Reasons: more features for $$, right size for our 4 person family, and though I did love the smoothness of the V6 in the Telly, I REALLY enjoy the turbo 2.5. Very fun to drive. Love your videos!! How’s Evie liking the Bronco Sport by the way? Wife is looking at them now

Issue with rear hatch is that it won't automatically open unless the doors are locked. Often someone is still sitting in the car with doors unlocked as you bring the shopping back and in this scenario you have to find the button on the door or key fob.

Should have tried the hybrid EX build. It’s impressive. Linear power unlike turbo. I wanted telluride but this was for the wife and she wanted something smaller, and the hybrid. After driving it I was impressed. Surprised you didn’t cover the automatic driving features if that model has it... saw the button on the steering wheel. We didn’t know it had it when we bought but it kind of rings of Tesla self driving without the full self driving package.

TRON legacy was so cool, and I think a tad underrated, but also this is coming from someone who's a huge fan of Olivia Wilde and The Dude... so I'm terribly biased, and the soundtrack made by Daft Punk is something I still enjoy to this day, and the featured song Derrezzed still gets me going. Oh yes Sorento. A few years ago we crossed shopped the (now previous gen one) vs an Outback, and the outback won for us, but it's still a pretty good family car with lots of bang for the buck. I'm still not fully sold on that kind of 3rd row seats tbh. Yes kiddos like Micah's (and mine that are of a similar age bracket) will fit in there and it might work if you're carpooling (whenever that's a thing post covid) kids from school, but for any more serious work, you're gonna want bigger seats, like in a minivan, so why not just buy it in the first place? We chose the outback partly because it was a sweeter deal, it felt carlike (duh) and it was slightly smaller, so a better fit for our tight parking arrangement, so this vs a telluride would also swing in a similar direction.

Some comments about the new Sorento from an owner of a late version of the last generation. Sorry, Micah. The cargo space behind the third row isn't "seven" cubic ft. Car and Driver (and KIA) puts it at 12.6 cf. That's hardly generous compared to larger midsize three row crossovers but the Mazda CX-9, for example, offers only 14 cubic ft and the Mazda is nearly a foot (10") longer than the Sorento. Nor is the 3rd row the penalty box compared to other 3 row SUVs that so many reviewers claim. The 29.6" of third row legroom is two inches more than the Toyota Highlander, for example. A vehicle that's at least a half foot longer than the Sorento. And the total legroom in all three rows, an important measurement since the first and second rows can be adjusted to accommodate passengers, is 113" compared to the Highlander's 110". Effie says that you "have to choose between having usable cargo space or having 6 passengers" in the Sorento. Our Sorento is my wife's daily driver and our family road tripper (2 adults, a teenage daughter and a big dog) and she would say you CAN choose between cargo space and passenger accommodations. Like most Sorento owners we deploy the third row rarely. Certainly no more than 10% of the time, if that. But when we need it for local journeys for 6 or 7 passengers or chauffeuring a gaggle of teenage girls, it's a HUGE convenience compared to taking two vehicles. And when we take a family trip with the third row stowed the Sorento gobbles up all our stuff easily. All in all, the Sorento is a Goldilocks vehicle for us. The Telluride is unnecessarily large. Most compact SUVs are less versatile and the Sorento is just right. It's not all rainbows and unicorns in the new generation, however. Much improved styling and the new 2.5L turbo 4 that's now found in at least 8 KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis vehicles is a win/win compared to the NA V6 in our Sorento. Better fuel economy and performance. As the owner of a DSG equipped GTI I'm very fond of dual clutch transmissions but as often is the case a new engine/transmission combo may need some tweaking after the first year of availability. The 50/50 user controlled torque split between front and rear wheels may not turn the Sorento into a rock crawler but it makes a huge difference in trudging up our extremely long driveway when it's covered in deep snow. I've only test driven the new model and it seemed fine to me but time will tell. And I won't be tackling Moab with either my or the new Sorento. For its mission of tackling the jungle of urban and suburban traffic along with gravel roads and the occasional trip to (but not on) mountain trails, the Sorento is great. A couple of more serious design decisions compared to the previous generation do strike me. I understand the trend toward putting only captain chairs in the second row of upper trim mainstream SUVs but I think KIA has carried it too far in the new Sorento. Not because our family needs space for more kids (Thank God) but the family dog's second home is the bench back seat of our top trim SX-Prestige Sorento. Limiting bench seating to the very lowest trim levels (not even including it as an option in the mid-trim EX version) is a deal breaker as far as the canine member of the family. Finally, for some unfathomable reason KIA has deleted driver seat memory, 4 way lumbar support, and an extending thigh cushion from all trim levels. So in addition to the dog's objections my wife says she won't consider trading our 2018 model for the new generation. Sadly, that leaves us with the choice of a relatively huge Telluride that when fitted with a hitch mounted bike rack won't fit in our garage or the Sorento's sibling, the Hyundai Santa Fe, that retains most of the features of our current Sorento but loses the relatively seldom used but very convenient third row of seats.

In my area at least finding a telluride at anywhere near msrp is impossible. And it's now spread to the Sorrento as I was looking for one last week. I think kia needs to reign in their dealerships on markups. At 4k over sticker these cars lose out on value which is one of their biggest draws.

Not all KIA dealers engage in "market adjustment" stickers. My dealer in the Seattle area, for example, has a policy of never charging over MSRP for any vehicle. I appreciate that policy but it does have the consequence of making the waiting list for vehicles in high demand considerably longer than it would otherwise be. You can blame the law of supply and demand for that. Some dealers, like mine, understand that building good will with their customers will pay off in the long run but that's a long range perspective that many dealers ignore. As for the need to "reign (sic) in dealerships on markups," you're apparently unaware that KIA has no control, whatsoever, over the price a dealer charges for a vehicle. Since automakers (with the exception of Tesla in some states) are prohibited by state laws from selling their vehicles directly to consumers, their customers are the dealers, themselves. The MSRP is exactly what it says -- a SUGGESTED retail price. Once a dealer purchases a vehicle from the automaker they can charge whatever the traffic will bear. It's different in some countries outside the US (e.g. Canada as I recall) where MSRP is a ceiling price that dealers cannot violate. But here in the US the devotion to "free enterprise" restricts the power of an automaker over the actions of their franchise dealers. If that seems odd, consider an analogous situation. Suppose I sell you a house you intend to "flip." I cannot condition that sale to specify you cannot sell the house for more than, say, 10% more than you paid for it. You bought the house. You're free to sell it for whatever you can get. That's not to say that automakers cannot exert pressure on specific dealers in any way at all. They can, for example, respond to dealers that sell more cars by filling their orders more promptly. But the more popular a particular vehicle is, the less effective that pressure will be. Again, blame the law of supply and demand. Don't like it? You might want to consider that unfettered capitalism has its downsides.
@gonzo221

@@jcabrera8425 I'm in the northeast, New York metro area. We were looking at a Sorrento prestige xline as well. When we couldn't find one with 100 miles of us that didn't have a few thousand dollar markup we decided to look into other makes.
@gonzo221
@gonzo221 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenhendricks103 or the manufacturers can revoke the dealerships franchise license. Either way the point is moot. If their is a market for people paying more then msrp then that's what the "value" for that vehicle is. But, Kia as a manufacturer would be better served by gaining more market share and selling higher volumes. Not to mention the customers that have poor dealership experiences are more likely to write the manufacturer off completely do to the perceived poor customer service. All in all annoyances like this are just going to speed up the inevitable day where car manufacturers can just sell directly to the customer instead of working through an outdated dealership network model.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 жыл бұрын
@@gonzo221 Oh, come now. Claiming that the automaker has the option of revoking a dealer franchise is a ridiculous option. Don't you miss the nose you once had before you cut it off to spite your face? As for believing that elimination of dealerships in favor of direct sales to consumers is "inevitable" is a pipe dream. Laws restricting automakers' freedom to engage in retail sales are predominantly at the state level where local dealers have substantial legislative clout. Ask Tesla how difficult it has been to even bend those laws in numerous states. You're certainly correct that dealers who gouge prices with "market adjustment" stickers are an annoyance. It's one reason that I purchased my KIA Sorento from a dealer who doesn't engage in the practice. But again the fault doesn't lie solely with dealers trying to make a buck. If consumers refuse to pay for a "second sticker" they would disappear. And over many years of purchasing vehicles I've never found a dealer willing to forego a sale when I indicated I wouldn't pay a "market adjustment" price. Rather than complaining about a dealers' asking price perhaps you should sharpen your negotiating skills.

SUV pricing in general has become far too convoluted. It used to be that the top-of-the-line smaller vehicle usually maxed out, price wise, about $1k less than the base next larger model; but if you look at Kia's lineup, they have 7 vehicles they consider an SUV (that includes the Soul and the Carnival, aka the mini-van). 5 of the 7 have common models in available for about $32k. There comes a point where you can only slice a pie so thin, and I think the manufacturers are well past that.

I. Bought the CX 9 over the Sorento. It is a joy to drive with great feel and plenty of power. The interior is very upscale. Interior is a bit bigger behind the third row. Nice 12 speaker Bose sound system. Leather and a power hatch. A joy to drive and quite a looker in snowflake white metallic pearl.

I'd have to agree, way too much glossy plastic. Those air vents are kinda weird looking too. Do we really need 8 air vents just on the upper dash??
@Jokero_YT
@Jokero_YT 2 жыл бұрын
You might think it's weird buy wait until winter, the lower vents help heat up the lower half of your body, which in a classic vents layout, it blows hot air at your face while your torso and upper legs are cold. I wish more brands would take this approach vs just hot air for your face.

Does it have the typical feel of a typical DCT? That's been my biggest concern about the latest Sorento and Santa Fe. DCT's just don't seem to fit the "feel" of a midsize SUV. I feel like the roughness around town would get old.

@hedydd2 3 жыл бұрын
The changes are absolutely smooth and very quick. The main difference between this [mine is a diesel] and the Volvo XC90 is that the Sorento down changes for engine braking down hill more readily. Otherwise you just can't tell that it's a DCT when driving. It does slip nicely when starting off to hide the fact that it lacks a torque converter. It is, when said and done, a robotised automatic synchromesh transmission that actually changed ratios internally very like a manual/stick shift

The 10yr warranty is a sales pitch and a gimmick. Had problems with them 2 times 2 different Kia Sorento. They do not honor it unless you complain so much and get lawyers involved. I know people will argue that kia is the best but from my past experiences I will pay a little extra for something more reliable. Kia and Hyundai Cars are beautiful and very tempting to buy but I have learned to stay away at any cost. I also have family members that swear that Kia and Hyundai are amazing yet their Cars and have had engine/powertrain problems within 100k miles. Just my honest opinion.

The thing I hate most about current Kia/Hyundai offerings is the infotainment, reminds me of poor android skins where there's super inconsistent UI throughout different menus and pages, 20 ways to do the same thing, and a bunch of gimmicks that clutter the screen and prevent you from doing the basics. And they'll likely never received any updates to fix that and you're stuck with it.

I really like watching these vehicle reviews with Evie & Micah, HOWEVER... When Micah gets on one of his rants about something he doesn't like, does like, or gets excited about something and sporadically interrupts Evie while she's talking, it brings out some anxiousness within myself that I never knew I had. It's like he gets uncontrollably frenetic and gabs too quickly and almost behaves like he has ADHD or something. #energylevelswaytoohigh Lol

“For a KIA”…Guessing you all haven’t test driven the Telluride, Stinger, K5 or the K900. Don’t generally see people driving six people on a Costco run. We pop up the third row when we have some of my daughters friends in the Sorento. Otherwise, it’s fine. Never watched such a negative review of the Sorento.

Unfortunately the mere fact that there needs to be a warning built in to the vehicle to alert that you somehow forgot your child is not only disgusting but proves the total depravity in our society. In MY day we had this thing called COMMON SENSE and this other thing called CARING FOR YOUR CHILDREN PROPERLY!!!! That said, back when I was growing up and at a certain age, hanging out in the car while mom and dad shopped was great. I was however old enough to handle it responsibly and my parents kept on an eye on me. Back then this was not uncommon. AND this was in L.A. in the 60s and 70s. By the time I was a teen, I didnt dare go near a car with parents in it, mine or otherwise... :) As Confucius said, when the family fails, the whole empire is ready to collapse.
