Lexus decided to put a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four in the 2021 ES 250 AWD. With only 203 horsepower, this engine doesn't have a lot of grunt for throwing this luxury sedan around. But does choosing this small engine help save money at the pump?

ES 250 AWD F Sport owner here. I average 30 - 34 mpg on daily trips to and from work. The best I’ve gotten was 41mpg on a 3 hour road trip with 4 ppl and luggage in the car driving around 80mph. I enjoy the car, it’s quiet, fuel efficient, great AWD system, pretty good ML audio system and I LOVE the triple beam LED headlights. The ride is smooth and quiet and maintenance it low. I highly recommend this car. Great review btw.

ES250 owner here. The highest I've gotten is 43 mpg on a 700+ mile road trip during summer with AC on. Also this engine only need regular gas and is used on many Toyota models.

**** mpg is decent for a retrofit like this ES 250. I would estimate an AWD Hybrid ES would do over 40 on the Highway and even more in the city.

Main thing is to stay on it and disciplined even in the rough patches. Like any job, it has ups and downs. But with no boss to push you, it all has to be internal.

@@DailyMotor I have a corporate sales job so thank God for that income but i always loved cars and thought be great fun to start a channel. If i could just get to point of driving around press release cars i would be happy. And hey if i make some passive income that wouldn't hurt. Thanks for the reply and info!

Your test very stupid. This is engine with high compression ratio, for good efficiency it's need high octane of gas.

It's a naturally aspirated inline-four, and Toyota recommends regular gasoline. How would you possibly recoup the cost of premium fuel?

@@DailyMotor you must understand that there is a minimum octane number allowed. This is for stupid people who don't know anything about cars and simply multiply their consumption on paper by the cost of the minimum allowed fuel when buying car. The car CAN drive at 87 octane, but this is an inefficient mode for a high compression ratio engine. In other words, using 87 octane, you turn an advanced engine into an ordinary one. To show the efficiency that Japanese engineers conceived, and for this they provided mechanisms, 93 octane is needed. Fuel consumption and dynamics will noticeably improve, and there will be savings.

www.manualslib.com/manual/1799962/Lexus-Es-250.html?page=482 If Toyota had engineered this engine to run on 91 octane, they would have specified it in the manual. You're not going to see a 20% increase in fuel economy by using a higher octane. That's how much you'd need to justify using 91.
