In this video we tour 2021 Multihull Of the Year Winner, the Explocat 52 cruising catamaran by Garcia Yachts. It’s a catamaran designed for blue water cruising, but not just in the trade winds and tropics like most of the cats we review…instead this boat is destined to go well off the beaten path…a true expedition yacht who’s builder has nearly 50 years experience in building metal boats, yet is a sister yard to the high performance Outremer catamarans and Gunboat.

The best thing about this boat is the ability to safely beach on the keels. This makes it possible to clean the hull and do quick maintenance between tides, instead of having to be hauled out. Shaft drives instead of sail drives would make this an even better yacht.

Yeah, surprised they went with sail drive.

@Deborah TheMiorgan all of the full time blue water sailors I’ve heard from say that shaft drive is the safest option and requires far less maintenance. Sail drive is less expensive to install which is why they say so many catamaran companies use it.

@Mal L ok let's get pedantic then. Canting helms (as they where originally called) have been in operation since the 1930's possibly even older than that. But Balance perfected the concept. They deserve to give it an appropriate name.

The hinged helm has been around for some time. I've seen them on monohulls years ago to bring the wheel from one side of the boat to the other or straight up. I've only been watching cats for about 8 years and Balance was the first one I've seen use it in this configuration. But you can't stop innovation. And the pivoting helm position is a game changer in the cat field. BTW. I love this metal cat.

Aluminum without significant weight penalty? Yeah right. Do the calculations. It's 3x heavier than a composite laminate and still not as strong or as fatigue resistant. Plus you need to add additional weight to insulate the hull and decks for thermal and sound. Plus you have major corrosion problems to deal with. And then you end up with a catamaran that will sink to the bottom unless you have very large flotation chambers. There are many good reasons why aluminum is not widely used for cruising cats. But the main one is that they get very heavy and consequently are very slow.

Pick your poison. The problem with plastic boats is that gelcoat is very high maintenance. You have to continually wax it to prevent UV damage and oxidation. For a catamaran that is a substantial ongoing maintenance cost, and was the straw that broke the camels back and the reason we sold our cat. I would consider an aluminum boat in the future if one comes out I can afford.

This is a really nice boat but I still have yet to see a catamaran that doesn't look like a bleach bottle inside. None of them have finishes and wall coverings or wood paneling that make them feel cozy, so stark and impersonal. Its my biggest gripe about CATs.

Take a look at the Argentine built ones they have a more traditional yatch type finish inside and are a little more conservative externally ..with shaft drives and hybrid power options. This is a quality design but theres some tweaks that would make it even better ...but its about purpose and personal preferences.

If you aren't customizing your boat to your liking then its your own fault. And doesn't that depend on the layout and design? Cats that have wraparound windows in the saloon aren't going to have a place to put anything on the walls yknow.

Multi-hull boats have shallower drafts and wider beams, so they're faster and, yet, more stable. They're prone to capsizing, but not prone to sinking unless the windows break or the doors leak. My only fear of multi-hull boats is their tendency to break in the middle or to run aground even on light ice because of the wider beam and lower force/area. The only realistic multi-hull option for the higher latitudes would be a trimaran, like the Independence Class littoral vessel, but much smaller, which has the central hull leading the lateral hulls to ensure the lateral hulls don't receive any wake from the central hull, to make the structure more robust, to better pierce the waves with the leading central hull, yet, cushion the plunge from a crest into a trough, with the following lateral hulls, and to use the central hull to glide atop on ice-pack, drag the lateral hulls over the pack, and then break the ice-pack with the weight of the yacht, not the force of impact. I would be very much interested in the Garcia Exploration Catamarn if it can be taken all the way up to the Arctic or the Antarctic, otherwise, I'd either settle for the Garcia Exploration 60, which has a very luxurious saloon, owner's suite and sundeck, but still has a single engine and a single propeller. The Murphy's Law has always worked against me, so I'd, ideally, want twin engines, twin screws and twin rudders, not just for redundancy, but also for better steering, like those on the sailing yachts Pangaea and Tara. The ideal expedition yacht, though, would be the Alucia with a 48ftx36ftx13ft hangar for the Gweduck amphibious aircraft.

Niiiiiice boat. . The only downside I see for "more mature explorers " is the lack of walk around births or even semi island briths. We don't want to 'climb' into bed, we want to get into bed (just ask you lady partners). Just makes more sense. And with 52 feet, this is sooooooo possible. Bummmer.
@MultihullCentral1
@MultihullCentral1 2 жыл бұрын
Well yes, but those little gaps each side of the bed have a huge impact on the performance by blowing out the hull width. It shouldn't be a surprise that old school catamarans sail well and the new generation like this don't. This boat still offers some good performance by staying true to sailing fundamentals and that is the compromise.
@HopeOfJoe

Much prefer having no gaps at the sides of the beds - automatically have leeboards, much better than leecloths. If you're at anchor fine any sort of bed will do (well at least most of the time) and probably on a catamaran less risk but I'd much rather have no gaps at the sides of the beds. Plus as mentioned anything to keep the hulls narrow is a good thing.

Nice cat for a 52 footer, but those small fuel tanks and the stupid saildrives gotta go. The high maintenance saildrives and not enough fuel for extended off grid remote places expedition stile sailing does not work ! God forbid you hit something solid lurking just below the surface with one of those saildrives and bust open the membrane “5000 miles from nowhere”, you go into the drink 100% ‘cause aluminum ain’t floating unlike those foam cored composite hulls like the Gunboat. Me like the idea of an aluminum “explocat”, but at around 72’ (24m) LOA, a little bit skinnier hulls ratio to improve performance, higher bridge deck clearance, a sail plan more like on the Chris White’s Atlantic 72 cat, aquadrive seal and coupling on a shaft propulsion and more fuel capacity for the heating and the generator while on extended stay above 60 degrees N or S. Something like that would probably convince even Skip Novak to switch from his Pelagic monohulls to the “Explocat” multihulls, right? LOL Nah, absolutely not ! A multihull will never ever be safer than a monohull in the remote arctic regions for the simple fact that a multihull does not forgive an “overpowered situation” and once capsized it will never right itself like a monohull ! So, keep the multihulls for island hopping / leapfrogging and deck partying in the tropical paradises and the good ole aluminum or steel monohulls for the arctic exploration.
