In this video we're breaking down the systems and technologies we've built up over the course of 14 years of full time sailing and living aboard our boat off grid. We will be covering 4 essential pieces of the puzzle that allow us not only to survive out here, but to live our lives comfortably! We will discuss electricity, how we make it, and what our set up is. We will talk about food: how we plan and figure out what we need, and how we store it. We will share how we're able to turn saltwater into drinkable freshwater, and lastly, how we're able to get the connectivity we need to stay safe, run our business, and entertain ourselves!
We've got LOTS of other videos and resources to learn more about certain topics covered, and links to products we've mentioned in the video. Check em all out here:

I have been living off grid for almost 20 years now. When I was 21 I purchased a 400 acre property in the Mojave Desert with nothing on it. The first structure I built was a small 20'x20' one room home. I started off with a old Kohler 10kw Diesel generator and I didn't have a well for the first 3 years so I had to truck water in. Fast-forward 20 years later I have 22kw of solar and 36kw of wind power with a 100kw diesel backup generator. With two wells and 100,000 gallons of underground water storage. The little 20x20 one room home now serves another purpose since I built a proper 6,000 sq ft home and a few other buildings.

I'm in my early 20s and have been considering doing the exact same thing. Any advice for someone inexperienced with off the grid living? Any regrets??

@@Not_Bomb678 Buying equipment is key, if I would have had a good medium or medium large excavator early on I could have accomplished more sooner. Equipment varies based on the environment you choose to live in. I wish I had more money when I first made the choice to build off grid so I could have built things sooner. I was a very skilled carpenter and builder going into this which made things go much easier.

@@ChrisHarding-lk3jj thanks for the reply, currently learning as much as I can about construction, carpentry, and metalworking etc as I'm sure these skills will be useful in general. I intend to do a lot of the work myself so I will definitely take your advice about budgeting appropriately for equipment. Thanks again!

Happy New Year to all of you, I love these videos on the logistics and how it all works. Some people can't manage life on solid ground. I think the age of Delos is irrelevant, especially when I see all the improvements you have made over the years to make it the boat that fits your needs perfectly. I am sure if you had another newer boat the process would start all over again. As long as Delos is structurally sound it is the best boat for you. Keep safe.

Also, kudos to the Delos team for delivering such a well-edited and professional video in the middle of nowhere! It's truly amazing what can be achieved in this day and age. Great episode ! One thing that interests me is how you plan for destinations, timelines, avoiding troublesome areas and weather. How much is just winging it, vs planning ahead or long term destination goals. And does there come a time after roughing it and isolating, that you rendezvous with past cruisers and friends at certain time lines, or are they all just chance encounters! Also Brian always does such a great job of researching your destinations and areas visited. Does he read up ahead of arrival to plan visits and local history, or just gain knowledge from the locals.

if you want to live on a boat it can be done fairly cheap with somewhat limited mechanical skills, if you want to live on a boat the way these people do you will need 1 enough time because fixing it will be your full time job 2 mechanical/technical knowledge to do so 3 massively deep pockets to afford to fix the boat

If you keep your potatoes and onions in a dark place, they will last longer. Even the dark tinted bags they come in at the store will work, so long as they can breath. Prevents them from turning green and sprouting as quickly. I know fridge space is at a premium, but avocados can be stretched quite a bit if you refrigerate them. Buy the super green and hard ones, and keep them cold. Take them out threeish days prior to use to let them ripen. Washing veggies in a diluted white vinegar solution can add just a little shelf life to them as well.

I used to sail professionally in my youth, I'm fully land based now though. Something we used to do from sailing is wrap iceburg lettuce in a good few layers of kitchen paper and ziplock bag it, then freeze it, if you have space. It can be so nice when all the fresh leaves are gone to throw together a crisp salad. Also if you plan a little bit and buy your flour 2 days before your freezer products, you can freeze the flour for 24 hours to kill off any of the little bugs that may hatch and thrive in flour. I do this now even on land, as i dont bake much so flour can sit in my cupboard for months unused. And when i go to use it, its alive. The larvae is there in all flour from the field, but only grows and hatches 6-8 months after processing (use by date) so freezing kills it off before it can impact your flour. Ziploc bag, freezer 24+ hours, good to go😊

The inquiry delves into the intricate balance between spontaneity and meticulous planning in travel adventures, pondering the extent to which one improvises versus strategically plans for destinations, timelines, and circumventing challenges like adverse weather and problematic areas. It also contemplates the transition from rugged isolation to reconnecting with fellow travelers - whether these encounters are serendipitous or prearranged. Furthermore, it praises Brian's adeptness at researching destinations and wonders whether his expertise stems from pre-trip study or insights gathered from locals upon arrival.

It was a game changer we could also pick it up and bring it to my in-laws who are also in the underserve area down in Southern Iowa. It’s truly a game changing technology.

Your four items are the same as people have who live on firm dry land! But your perspective is unique as to how to create electricity and water; shop and store all the food products; and how to stay abreast of current events and entertainment. It takes a lot of management skills and organization! Great video.

Great episode Delos crew! As a sailor I appreciate the concept of taking an older boat and getting her to the point that you are totally self sufficient. You are doing the cruising lifestyle with such a high level of proficiency it’s really a treat to watch. A couple of thoughts for future videos: Your lifestyle is so honed - how do you bring a new visitor or crew member into the mix without overwhelming them with the tiny details of “this goes here” and “don’t do that”? // What would be your advice for how to prioritize updates to a boat? // Being so remote what safety and emergency plans do you have (the doctor/starlink concept you mention in this video is something I have not thought about before and the concept of remote medical care a great subject in itself) but also it brings to mind that there are many types of emergencies you must be planning for. Been a fan for a long time - thanks for all your efforts to bring something unique to the world!

Very good information. I can relate a lot to this as we lived off grid in a cabin we built. We counted Watt hours and set up solar and all that. We had a well for shower water but collected rain water from the roof for drinking water. And, we only went shopping once a month or less so, we had a large pantry/storage room. Really good info that relates to off grid anywhere and experience helps a lot as I'm sure your situation has gotten lots better over time. It seems to work that way with experience.

I have been filling my whole knowledge of off grid sailing in negativity to see if I still want to make this change. I still did after watching all those videos. And then I came across this video. This definitely confirmed me. I want this life. I'm ready to buy this year. All the negative stuff just needs to go now and fill my heart with what awaits in my future early retirement.
