Wow! This DCFC test shows the main limitation of Polestar 2 in my opinion. In daily use most won’t ever run into this problem but on longer trips or if your rely on DC charging as your main form of charging, I’d recommend another EV. What do you think?
@rarelyaccurate6252
@rarelyaccurate6252 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with this. I might only charge mine on a DCFC one to three times a year tops and in those cases I will just be adding 20-30% to make sure I can get back to my home without any issues. Typically, I generally only drive farther than that once a year and I would take my wife's ICE suv for that trip. Charging at home over night is much cheaper for me (approx. 1 cent per KWH), so I'd rather not charge anywhere else.

@@mamadouaziza2536 Yeah, 1 cent at least until December 2022, the subsidy may not be renewed beyond that. The cost between 11-6am is 6 cents per KWH and they give a 5 cent subsidy if you give the utility access to your smart charger that they work with (juicebox, chargepoint or a couple others) I estimated that the electricity cost is like $40-50 for 10,000 miles.

I have a polestar 2 and I can confirm. I charged from 5-80% in 33 minutes. I have never seen that charging curve on the video’s of Björn and Kris and other reviewers. But it might be temperature related or something. 47 minutes to 80% is not representative for this car based on my own experiences. 30-35 minutes is more in line.

I just saw (August 2022) an announcement of a software update for the Polestar 2 that includes something that was described as "incremental speed improvements for DC fast charging". I would be very interested in hearing any reports on how that update may impact the charging curve that you documented almost a year ago.

I concur with E=MC^2. I have the Polestar 2 with V2.2 and the charge curve is much improved. I can charge from 10-80% in around 30-35 minutes and sustained peak charge up to about 37%. You should retest the P2 with the software 2.2. It is a really awesome car!!!

Kris Rifa had the Polestar 2 charge from 10 to 80% in 38 minutes, and his most recent Model 3 charged from 10 to 80 in 35 minutes. But the P2 charging curve really crashes above 80%, and is really bad above 90%. Maybe Polestar can eventually be persuaded to improve that via OTA updates

On the other hand, With the "new" LG battery. Bjørn recorded the same range (224m+) in a Model Y, 70kWh pack, (10%smaller) at *120kph, 80mph* It charged (V2) 6.5-90% in 44 minutes. But. At 80 vs 70 mph, over that range, it would arrive at the charging station 20 minutes in front of the Polestar. In that 20 minutes, starting at the same 6.5% it added 54% charge (61% total) So it could leave with 90% 26 minutes after the Polestar arrived (Polestar on about 58% from zero) Alternatively, it could run with the Polestar (70 mph) and arrive with considerably more charge. I should say, Bjørn was disappointed by the charging on this battery (so far) compared to the Panasonic and the CATL LFP packs. So, the worst case Tesla wins.

@59317
@59317 2 жыл бұрын
In theory, yes. It’s technically possible for them to modify the curve. In practice, Polestar/Volvo allows you to use almost all of the battery pack capacity with very little buffer on the top and bottom. So there’s a practical limit to how fast they can make the top end of the curve. I’m sure this decision was made to try to balance range+interior design/features vs. price. Smaller battery=more budget for fancy, so then smaller buffer makes the most range out of that smaller battery at the expense of DCFC speed at the top end. They might be able to eek out some more speed after they see more data though… just don’t think it’ll be a ton.

Remember, the 450v top charge is not as high in the Polestar 2 as you think. It has 108 cells series so 450v is 4.17v/cell keeping it safely below 4.2v. Limiting to under 4.2 does increase lifetime of battery though, reducing range degredation. They should however do this when you slowcharge, not when you fastcharge. Fastcharging is the few times where you want it to be fast and get up quickly, there should be options allowing 4.2v/cell in this case allowing a chargevoltage of 453.6v while still stopping the charge at around the same almost 100% SOC by monitoring the open cell voltage.

This test is appreciated but the folks should not make up their mind solely based on this video now. According to my past charging experience (and others whom i've talked with) this charging cruve is NOT representative at all so it may just be related to other factors that compromise the charging speed.

I have had a totally different charging curve than you with speed upp to 152kW up until 27% at some times. I made a charging test video (latest one on my channel) where the clarging from 10-80% took under 38 minutes. I did not get the full speed up to 27% that time, but still much higher than you seemed to get. Wonder what can have caused the difference. At 80% I had just over 50kW, but after that I almost never keep charging. The last 10-15% is really slow. I have driven a roadtrip of 1000 miles (1600km) in one run and most of my stops where around 20-25 minutes, charging up to just around 60%, enough to go a few hours and reach another fast charger. When on trip with family the car often is over 80% before my kids are done eating etc. :)

The car you tested had the charging update. It still doesn't charge like any other EV. The cells in the car have a magificently low internal resistance and it appears from all the calculations it should do 10-80% at a steady 140-150kW in 28 minutes max. It does not. Getting an average of 110kW is not too shabby though, still well below advertised and if you arrive with 30% and you need 70% to get to the next charger you are in for a long wait.

My 2015 Model S can put 125 miles in the battery in 30 minutes on a V2 supercharger, which roughly takes me to 175 miles total range, from 50, which is when I usually pull into a supercharger. That is about 70% of my total battery capacity in its current age and health. Based on my calculations, the Volvo put about 127 miles into the battery in 30 minutes, based on Kyle's total battery capacity of about 220 miles. It's amazing that my 6 year old Tesla still nearly matches today's competition in charging.

Take a look at the pack voltage as it charges. It actually backs off from 405v at 11% SOC to 403v so basically it is reducing the peak pack voltage allowed in rough steps as it charges. This is opposite to almost every other EV maker on the market. The only place where peak pack voltage should be a bit carefully limited is at the higher SOC's like 70-80% and up as high voltages at high SOC is degrading pack more than the rest of the charging. I own one of these and the charging is a lemon. It is the worst thing about the car. A quick top-up when you are out for a longer drive wastes 2.5x as much time as it has to.

Let it sit there and drain (no cooling air), its almost 100 degrees outside, and keeping it hot. I doubt the mustang or other cars were beat up that bad just before charging. It does pre-condition the battery if you have the heat pump optioned. This I know. And with 230 range doesnt look like you have the latest OTA update either. Also, you don't need to always charge to 80 or even 100 percent if you can't spare the time, just charge to as much as your time and or patience allows..
