James and Thomas take the new 2021 Polestar 2 and review it against the market-leading Tesla Model 3. Both are all-wheel drive fully electric cars that have the word performance in their trims. The Polestar 2 recently received an official EPA range rating of 233 miles (375 km) whereas the model 3 performance has 322 miles (518 km) of range. They both command a similar price of high 70s Canadian. But are they worth it? And does the new kid on the block, the Polestar, pose a serious challenge to the Tesla? The boys explore the cars driving dynamics and what they are like to live with every day. Exterior and interior styling comparisons help figure out which one takes it in the looks department, and the back roads do the rest. Watch to see the outcome. SUBSCRIBE!
Thank you to Alex, Frank and the team at Polestar Toronto and Grand Touring Automobiles for allowing us to feature the Polestar 2. Check out their inventory here! www.grandtouringautos.com/

Actually the intro for me was enough to immediately stop watching. "I'm proud of you. You finally moved out of the city". Um, what now? Why would you be proud of someone for moving out of the city? As if living in the city is a bad thing? Why? Do these guys look down on people who live in the city? Why? A small throw away line that raises so many questions! All this really does is show a bias for the 20th century, suburban, car-centric mind set IMO. As a student of modern day city planning and sustainability, this is a no-no for me.

I just got back from a polestar test drive and I honestly found interior quality...disappointing. And this was the upgraded version. Many of the materials look much nicer than they feel. And once you start focusing on the details, it sort of falls apart. The grab handles above the passenger front feel very cheap, the vents feel like they will break, the plastic in the rear center vent area hollow and cheap, the wood is very fake feeling/looking in person. The vegan leather seats were looked and felt very nice, but the rest of the materials were not so impressive. Definitely test drive yourself one before judging, you might also be surprised.

Polestar look really good IMO, if there’s one thing Volvo does well is design. Proportions and interior are pretty close to perfect. I’d be more inclined to get one than a Tesla. I agree with James’s originality assessment. In Austin where I live, Teslas are EVERYWHERE, and I’m just now starting to see Polestar 2s on the street. Between the two, I’d honestly buy a polestar 2 over the Model 3. It’s better built and not nearly as common (at least in Austin) so I feel like I’m driving something different from everyone else. The Bioweapon VIrus and its variants has caused huge death and trillions in Economic Damage and pain to the people of the world. "WORKING TOGETHER" with the Chinese at this point is BS. They need to be defeated. Even the CHINESE "SMART THERMOSTATS" that allow you to change the Temp/AC/Heat from your smartphone spy on and steal information from other devices. It was discovered that in the Election the Thermostat was sending Vote Totals and information to CHINA and may have even connected wirelessly to the Voting Machines to switch votes. It is funny how the leftists claim the CIA/Dominion vote swapping machines can't even connect to the internet but it is been proven that when you get a brand new one out of the box the first thing that appears on the screen when you turn it on is "DO YOU WANT TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET" and it walks you through the process. Test drove both. Bought the polestar. It feels more solid and handles way better. If you really need a car that goes a second faster in a 0-60 drag race, and feel anxiety over not having the range then good for you but most drivers don’t need anywhere near that speed. The polestar in person is absolutely gorgeous and the interior is noticeably nicer. No gauge cluster in the model 3 was also a huge negative for me. There’s no reason to not have it other than cheapness on teslas part. The piano black throughout the polestar is annoying tho and the seat material isn’t my favorite. Still love teslas but the design is aging. Just my two cents.

@VoxelLoop
@VoxelLoop 3 жыл бұрын
Apparently, the transmission hump contains some of the battery cells, Polestar opted for this rather than raising the floor slightly. If you sit in the back of a Model 3 you'll notice the floor is raised up because of the battery pack, in the front, the battery ends before were your feet are so it's not an issue for the driver. Though, I'm not sure how many people have full-sized adults in the rear of any car now, usually it's just kids. I could understand it being a pain though if you did have full-szied adults in the rear seats very often and for long journeys. :)

tbh, the performance pack Polestar 2 with the Ohlins dampers rides too firmly, considerably too firmly, on rough roads. If you soften it to the softest setting maybe it is OK. But out of the factory, it's too stiff. The regular dampers are better in this regard yet the car still handles great. I feel the steering on the Polestar is better because it's not so twitchy at higher speeds. In real life, driving behind slower drivers as we do in everyday driving, these are firm and quiet cars but have very different characteristics. I prefer the European solidity of the Polestar. It feels like what it is: a sporty tuned Volvo.

You guys crack me up and are a pleasure to watch! As for the cars, I've never had the opportunity to drive any electric vehicle, but I really struggle with the stark interior and unfinished looking front end of the Tesla. I always feel like the Tesla 3 looks like a clay engineering concept model that they painted and sent out the door! The Polestar has a much more finished look to me and car-like interior, but there is no missing the Volvo influence in the styling. Not necessarily a good thing in my book. It doesn't always come down to which one is fastest 0-60 in real world driving, but range is critical in an EV and it sounds like the Polestar has some work to do in that department!

Throughout Europe, actually, the polestar will be fine, non-Tesla-CCS charge points outnumber Tesla SC 5:1 or something like that... Travel 2-3h, take a 20-30 minutes stretch and go on. I have tried the TM3 Performance and not yet the P2, but seeing the reviews, apart from range, the P2 seems (to me) to be the better road trip car (more practical luggage, more comfortable ride).

@@verbimaarten granted, my experience is from rental cars a few weeks per year (with 250km distances travelled) with first gen leaf/i3 'back in the day and never models more recently as well as my own ev (new i3) since October. That said, I have not yet come upon a station with all charge points out of order. The two closest calls are: one road trip with a model S where I had to wait an hour in line at the Tesla SC (more cars than chargers on a public holiday in Sweden) and at a local groceries store where the ChaDeMo was broken (CCS still fine, but I had a leaf loaner), this wasn't a road trip though, so, no biggy. Back in 2015, it was a bit annoying to travel with the leaf due to the slow charging and short range, but it worked fine. Had to do one longer and one shorter stop for a 300km trip..

As always great review guys. I agree, get the Model 3 Long Range and invest in performance suspension and brakes. Sorted. One point to remark is that Polestar is still struggling with the tech, yes the Android is great and the tech will improve, but how truly integrated is it with the driving and drive train components? As was proven, the incidental shutdown of power whilst driving couldn't be fixed OTA. It makes you wonder what else can't be fixed OTA, firmware upgrades etc? Jaguar struggled with this as well. Because there is still a divide between the tech and automotive guys at Volvo. This shows through their "self-driving" system, which is effectively a smart cruise control, developed by the automotive team, not the tech teams. Different goals i guess, but if you want a future proof car, better look at from the ground up EVs. Which polestar simply isn't.

Tesla aren't really car manufacturers and it shows fully in their cars, they look cheaply made and not well built at all for the price they are asking. Tesla is like a software maker (in which they totally outdo the competition) that started to build cars. So sure, Teslas might be built from the ground up as EVs, the problem with that argument is they're just not build well or to a high standard.

Don't think that is an issue with the late models 3, and you do get it fixed for free. But the early ones did have more panel gaps and problems. Though the newer ones are just as good as other companies. I think it was a GM or Ford director that actually was impressed with the one he saw, as Tesla had really improved it in less than a year, even said it was on pair with theirs. Also look up Monroe here on youtube, he is a engineer that have work with many companies, and he really panned them for it too, until he saw the newer ones. Now he is almost a fanboy :P

Something worth mentioning from this is the talks about interior quality, the materials used. The Model 3 seems to have this thing going around online where everyone is convinced the interior is made of cheap materials, but in reality, it's mostly all vegan leather, plastic covered with a soft and squishy material, or alcantara. It feels nice, and the lack of a dashboard gives you a really good and open view. (Though the real reason for not having one is that Tesla believes the cars will drive themselves, and as they put it, you don't look at the dashboard in a taxi) I think it's just... Really different, and people either love different, or hate it, but they need to find stuff to complain about to justify their opinion for some reason. :)
