I think this is targeted at Dads like me who want a serious grocery grabber no matter the weather. So I bought one, $38K OTD and mine came with the TRD skid plate, predator step bar and grappler tires.

2wd or 4wd? I managed to get a 4wd w/ push button start for 40K. It was as cheap as any base SR5 I could find at the time. Not sure why people hate on these. I got a better looking SR5 with a few add-ons for the same price. If I sell the cooler and roof rack I'll be at/below SR5 price points with a unique paint job. Oh, and the wife loves the Cement color. That alone is worth any additional $ lol. At the 43k price point, I'd agree that it's a bad deal.

I absolutely love how far you are willing to push these vehicles. Gives people a real understanding of their limits. It is always disappointing when reviewers take vehicles to offroad locations but then are to afraid to show the limits.

I must say, I really do appreciate Ryan always going the extra mile to test the cars and his perseverance. I would have given up before he put on the chains and my anxiety would have caused maybe a little meltdown. Then again maybe that is why I don't have a KZfaq channel. Good stuff!

I do appreciate Ryan's taking these vehicles to the edge of it's capabilities. I was extremely surprised by the way the 4Runner handling or NOT handling the trail right before the chains were installed. Wish he had like a Subaru or even a Passport to compair with. Video doesn't do any justice on how difficult that trail is with snow.

Yeah, I think the trail edition is meant for driving off-road (trails), where you drive yourself and not let the car do the driving for you. But still a weird choice to put a 4wd dial instead of the lever in there. Just my opinion. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@soapbox187
@soapbox187 3 жыл бұрын
@@djg500 you are absolutely right. All the old Land Cruisers and FJs had mechanical controls all executed by the expertise of the driver. Something that goes unappreciated these days. TRD models are definitely for Chad's and Yoga instructors. If you can control you're vehicle there are few, if any, instances where you will use MTS and crawl control. I’ve owned three 4runners since 2014. A 2011 and 2013 trail edition and now a 2019 TRD off-road. Same truck, a little different look. There’s nothing “basic” about ATRAC, it’s a great feature and I think I’ve only ever had to go to my rear locker maybe twice! Also if they included crawl control (tried it for fun a few times then had to switch it off and hit the gas as my buddies left me in the dust) and multi-terrain select in the new trail edition it would be a TRDOR! 🤔 And no, no need for full time 4wd in all the models 🤨

Ryan, A manual transmission would make this really analog and the base SR5 remains the best 4X4 bargain on the market. Buyers can choose their own aftermarket accessories but a #locking rear diff ought to be standard or a stand alone option on all 4X4s. Finally, when you consider the ludicrously inflated price of so many unibody CUVs these days, almost any 4Runner looks like a deal.

He said he put on atrac while in 4hi. Atrac only works in 4lo. I see this time and time again. Atrac works like a charm if you actually know how to engage it. So many car reviewers don’t know about the vehicle they are reviewing besides memorizing the spec numbers. I like this channel tho and think he’s great at presenting these videos and I do appreciate that he actually takes these off road vehicles OFF ROAD rather than a dirt driveway or talking about the off road chops in an empty city parking lot.
@drivingsports
@drivingsports 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those two seconds should have been cut out. Honestly, it's an issue when producing a video and shooting features to always keep everything straight while filming and all the way through edit. Easy to overlook little things like that. That said, the surface was bad enough that I expect ATRAC wouldn't have helped much, if at all.

The only new 4Runner in southern WI I bought. 2019 4Runners and Tacoma’s were going for on average 3.5 grand more than new models. No shit! There is a major vehicle shortage right now. Everything is sticker price. On a side note; the black trail edition I bought is way sweeter looking then any other 4Runner I’ve ever seen but looks are way done the list of priorities for me, so... Reliability isnumber one. Plus, if I hit another deer, I know the insurance company will pay me more because it holds its value. I’ll get around fine in the mountains and on the lakes in the snow...

Nope they aren’t missing at all. Last year was the highest sales mark ever for a 4Runner. You are totally missing the point about this truck. They waited so long to change it because it works so well, and people appreciate it. They appreciate the simplicity and how trusted they are. If you want a turbo 4 or something like that get a Mazda lol. Comments like this make me laugh when talking about the 4Runner. They have absolutely nailed this thing, the proof is in the numbers too. Can’t keep them on the lot

@@tjbactual right! And I consider myself non biased because I’ve had 2 4Runners and also a grand Cherokee. The grand Cherokee drives like a dream, the transmission is much better, and interior nicer. It’s a great car. But it’s not nearly as reliable, and there’s something so refreshing about the simplicity and utility of the 4Runner. I love both but for very different reasons. If I had to pick one to stick with for the rest of my life tho, 4Runner hands down

This will probably be a popular trim level. Most 4runners are bought because they last forever not because of their off-road ability. Here on KZfaq we like to romanticize the off-road ability but most owners never even utilize half of it's capability. I had to make a decision when I purchased my 2020 Subaru Outback XT Onyx. Fuel economy, reliability, daily driver comfort, safety features, and practicality. I really wanted the 4runner but since I'm not an off-roader and since I really wanted the most safety features like blind spot monitoring I went with the Subaru. 4Runner would most likely last a lot longer but if you don't need that utility it makes it a difficult choice. I still love the 4Runner and may eventually buy a future release. But at this time for suburban driving conditions and only occasional snow/freezing rain conditions I like Subaru's AWD system and practicality.

@@mattmc7933 I also looked at the RAV4 hybrid. Which is a very attractive choice as well. I REALLY wanted to get this car but I found out about the gas tank issues they were having, and initially not acknowledging, and the space wasn't as generous as it is in the Subaru. But I think the gas tank issues are solved so definitely test drive the RAV4 hybrid as well. That 44 mpg is really an attractive selling point.

I recently got into your channel when I was researching new crossovers and I love the content. But, I've been a little confused when I see downed trees in multiple winter videos and you didn't carry a saw, shears, or axe to clear trees. This makes no sense to me. I live in Durham, NC and drive to the mountains most weekends to hike. In my trunk I always have a small folding saw and pruning shears, primarily for trail maintenance. These have also come in handy on a few occasions when I've encountered fresh downfalls on forest roads. I've managed to clear small 3-6 inch diameter trees in 5 minutes. We get much less snow in NC, and it seems like downfalls from snow are more frequent in the Cascades. You could buy a really good folding saw from Silky for under $100 that will cut through 6-12 inch trees in no time. It makes a lot of sense to always carry a saw no matter what the conditions are going to be.

At 40k with a TRD name there's no reason it shouldn't have a rear locker! Don't really care about the push button start or the heated seats. The simplicity of this truck along with the ladder frame makes this a better buyer than anything out there. Especially with all the crappy overhyped overvalued unibody SUVs! I kind of understand what they did here... they took the 4Runner and just gave it the bare minimum stuff that someone would want a big suv and 4WD. Obviously since they are only making 4K of these, they are just giving this to a small group who would want this. I do agree that heated seats and the omit of the off road features is odd, but I guess someone at Toyota corporate figured the customer who wants this won't use it.
