Out of curiosity what normally happens with the press cars? Are they scrapped or eventually sold?

The guys at Performance Drive are pros in this domain. They managed 4.8 second 0-100, on real world road not a prepped drag strip, without being so brutal on the driveline. Even launching at 3-3.5k RPM, they achieved 5.28 and 5.67, not 6.5 seconds as in this video. “During our usual performance testing, which we do on a private road with all cars that we review (except during launch events), we saw some eye-popping real-world acceleration figures from our Racelogic Vbox Sport data-logger (running 20Hz GPS processor). The stock-standard GR Yaris press car returned a best 0-100km/h run of just 4.80 seconds, in real-world conditions. By ‘real world’ we mean not a race track or specially-prepared drag strip, with no special preparation to the car other than checked tyre pressures. As usual, we tried out all of the various driving modes and tested a number of different launch methods. It’s always tricky launching a manual all-wheel drive, especially a turbocharged one. The potential issue is the engine can bog down as there is little to no wheelspin to get the engine revving. So, the best way to launch is usually to build the revs right up high before gradually but progressively releasing the clutch. All in all, we did 10 acceleration runs almost back-to-back, with appropriate cool-down periods in between. Across 0-100km/h, the results varied from 6.03 seconds, down to 4.80. Our best results were achieved in Track mode, with the stability/traction control in ‘Expert’ mode (off, essentially). Our best result wasn’t just a fluke, either. The car also ran a 4.98 and a 5.01. However, launching at around 3000-3500rpm returned slower results, with 5.28 and 5.67 and so on.”

Maybe the high traction surface of the drag strip worked against the Yaris by reducing the ability to wheelspin? Possible also that the often wet UK roads also allow a bit of wheelspin and prevent the engine bogging down - contributing to the great 0-60mph times we see there.
@PDriveTV2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry. In their defence, sometimes a drag strip can be more difficult for launching manual AWD cars. In this case we think a tiny bit of wheelspin actually helps the GR Yaris get off the line, but on the drag strip it might force the differential to slip out power to a single wheel or axle, compared with a less grippy road where all four hook up but spin slightly. If that makes sense. As suggested by Ian's comment.

You don’t just dump/drop the clutch. You should bring it out as close to engaging as possible. So there’s less clutch travel distance and force when it hits the flywheel.

i own both cars , the R32 will always win off the line unless the GR is launched because its also AWD and with the DSG it keeps up at road legal speeds. information from acceleration times still places the R32 as 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds which is still slower then claimed 0-100 of the GR Yaris from Toyota of 5.2 , maxxperformance on YT got 4.52 seconds with just a full exhaust system on the stock ECU with good shifting and at the end of this video MOTOR actually obtains a 4.89 , wait till Motive crack into the 10s 1/4 mile when they get their GR sorted. all of this changes at high speed , the R32 feels it starts to lose its pace at 160km/h , by comparison the GR feels that way at 200km/h. the GR Yaris is a hot hatch track and twisty road destroyer not a straight line monster , the R32 is a warm hatch you take out to go to car meets and food with the boys.

I'd rather hang my head in shame then smash the arse end out of my transmission. For the sake of a few 10ths then spend thousands on a new dual mass fly wheel and clutch on my GR. Not for me. The numbers are actually quite accurate from my experience. The engine lacks low end torque - under 3500rpm it's basically sleeping. In real life, many cars are faster than my GR off the mark. Unless I'm absolutely hammering it, I struggle to keep up with an Aurion V6 in a straight line.

0 to 60 acceleration tests are dumb. ‘Wow look how exciting is to accelerate the car while burning the clutch’. I even fail to see the fun on that unless you’re american and only drive muscle cars. Where I live there are many propper racing tracks with actual thrilling corners and elevation changes. If I have to destroy my car I’d rather do it eating kerbs.

This was so painful to watch.. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. That said, dropping the clutch is not a "proper launch", especially not in this car 👎
