What is the ceramic coating you mentioned in the beginning of the video? Is that the tint? Can you say what tint percentages you put on each window? Also, I believe the back seat windows have some black in the glass to tint it already. Is that as good as or better than a ceramic window tint at keeping it cool?

Thanks Jim! Would love some winter testing on range and AWD (Trail mode) on snow soon. Also, please do introduce in-depth the drive modes, especially clarify what they mean by ”HV-mode" (meaning gas only?). Great job & thanks!
@superlight47
@superlight47 3 жыл бұрын
HV mean hybrid Vehicle, so that will apply to your Regular RAV4 hybrid. In HV mode the computer will do all the thinking to tell it when to use both gas and electric, or just electric only, and when to regenerate energy, so you put in in HV mode for that. EV as you know mean Electric Vehicle, so putting it in EV mean it will drive on Electric only and will not turn on the engine up to 80 MPH, I think is what Toyota stated. The AUTO HV/EV mode will allow the computer to make the decision when to overate as a Hybrid only mode (HV), and when to operated on Electric only mode (EV).
@kalloslogos6363
@kalloslogos6363 3 жыл бұрын
@@superlight47 Thanks, but what's the difference then between AUTO HV/EV and HV mode? Isn't that the same then?
@superlight47
@superlight47 3 жыл бұрын
@@kalloslogos6363 I did explain that to you in the detail, but if it was not clear, this is it. The HV mode mean you will manually selective yourself that you want the vehicle to operate or drive as a hybrid only. The Auto HV/EV mode, once you select that mode, the ECU or vehicle computer will decide when to operate in Hybrid mode or when to operate in EV. In other words the vehicle will operated between these two mode without you having to manually select the modes to tell the vehicle to drive in EV or HV . Just to add in HV mode the setup is to assist the engine and slower shorter distance on EV, so it be switching between gas and electricity and a combination of electric and gas together more often. So gain Auto-HV/EV will operate on electric longer when it need to do so and will switch itself to Hybrid mode on it own, which will operate like your regular RAV4 hybrid. hope that is clear for you.

I am pleased that the RAV4 Prime has a lot of safety features standard, including Blindspot Monitoring and Rear-Cross Traffic Braking. There is an optional safety feature called Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automated Braking (PA w/AB) that is only available on the XSE Trim. I am pleased that the RAV4 Prime also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which both allow connectivity with your smartphone, including using GPS, listening to music, and making both phone calls and texts. That’s fulfills the criteria for me!

How fast can you drive on the freeway using only battery? Can you go 70-75mph on battery only?
@Emotionengne
@Emotionengne 3 жыл бұрын
The blue battery is for the hybrid engine. When the large green (traction battery) is depleted then the drivetrain falls back to the hybrid engine which is both ev and ice combined. So in theory these cars never completely run on gas even if you never charge them, that’s why you get that 40mpg (I think) on gas alone.

The official 42 miles from Toyota in EV mode is calculated for highway on a flat surface. No hills. So theoretically, in stop and go traffic travelling at lower speeds in the city and using eco mode, it should exceed 50 miles.

Hi James, I really like your videos. They are simple and to the point. I recently started looking for hybrid cars because I like to go economically. Another reason would be that I don't stay in a house and can't charged it all the time. I have seen tests with how many km / miles are done with the electric motor. I wonder if you did or will do a range test with how many miles you do with a full tank of gasoline and electricity on a longer road on the highway and national roads. I saw that you wrote in a comment that you had traveled 900 miles since you took the car and had a quarter of a tank.

If you use your house electricity to charge it, how much of an increase on your power bill monthly?
@JamesKlafehn

It depends on what your local utility charges you for electricity. At my house we are off grid and 100% solar power. But if we do need electricity its $.13/kwh. If your Prime takes 18kwh that is $2.34 per charge. How many miles do you drive per day? per week? You'd have to figure it out.

Why they not rating with mpge? This is plugin so it need to take in account of the electricity used to charge the battery unlike regular hybrid where battery is charge from gasoline.

@JamesKlafehn 3 жыл бұрын
They do rate it in MPGe on the window sticker. Its hard because this car bridges a few different buyers together. Some people who only have ever driven gas, some hybrid drivers and some full EV drivers. All have different habits and expectations. I plan on using the EV portion of this as much as possible. Other drivers might only consider it as a bonus, or not use it much at all. All would majorly effect their MPG or MPGE number.

James my wife and I currently have a 2020 Highlander Hybrid AWD. Here in Oregon if we purchase the Rav 4 Prime there is a $7,500 Federal Tax Credit and $2,500 from the State of Oregon, $10,000 total. The only issue is that the Rav 4 Prime's are rare and not stacked on dealer's lots. Also when you were just running on gasoline after the battery ran out what type of MPG's were you obtaining just on gasoline? Our Highlander is currently obtaining 41-42 MPG, I would have to believe that the Rav 4 Prime should get pretty close to that figure when driven moderately when running on the gas engine only. James there are many people looking at the Rav 4 Prime, please keep us updated if you can. Also I would have to expect your range would gradually improve as your Rav 4 gets broken in a little. Thanks for your real world video, which is exactly what prospective new owners want to see.

Really? PPF, ceramic on a Toyota? It’s a utility vehicle...seems like a waste of money. Probably cost less to get a new bumper cover every few years and have the car paint corrected!! Uhhh...you could have pre-cooled the cabin while you were doing your intro...would have taken all of 5 minutes. Otherwise, great test! I can’t wait for next model year and hope they make more than they will this year. Will definitely sell my 2017 CRV ICE to get this and then we’ll be almost completely off gas with our other cars being a Model Y and Model 3 TESLA. With a commute of 20 miles one way, this car would be perfect.

Pete Galindez I have a ceramic coating (DIY), PPF on the front hood, and a ceramic tint on my Toyota hybrid xle. What’s wrong with protecting your investment? These things last years.
@petegalindez9961
@petegalindez9961 3 жыл бұрын
megatron98 Nothing wrong with it. Just seems a waste of money for that type of car. First, it’s rare to see a modern vehicle get so beat up by rocks, etc. that they are beyond repair or where it is detrimental to the car. Second, people who buy used Toyotas, Hondas, etc., normally aren’t going to pay you the cost of what you laid out to get all that. Most buyers of these vehicles are looking for an appliance. A few nicks and cuts on the bumper, hood, etc. isn’t going to sway 99% of the people buying used. Third, these aren’t cars that get tracked so front ends getting eaten up isn’t a huge risk; at least not to the point where you would need to get it replaced. Fourth, if you get into an accident where PPF and ceramic get damaged, you now need to get that re-done, which adds more cost to the “investment.” So, it’s a balancing act. If it was a high end car where car enthusiasts who buy them used are picky about the car’s condition, then PPF and ceramic makes a lot of sense, especially if the car is tracked, or has a low front end that will definitely catch debris from the road. Lastly, a car is not an investment. It’s a depreciating asset. If you are looking at preserving it, paying a bunch of money to coat it and not getting any of that money back in the used market, is not protecting the asset...it’s adding to the debt! Just my two cents (I’ll take my penny change :). My dad has a Honda Accord. he just replaced the whole front bumper cover for $250. That seems a better way to protect the “investment”. Of course, if you’ve got the disposable income, go for it! It looks great and will definitely turn some heads. But lets not kid ourselves that it’s protecting an investment. The numbers just don’t support that proposition for a car in that price range and class (class meaning a CUV/SUV that is an appliance vice an enthusiast car).
@megatron98
@megatron98 3 жыл бұрын
Pete Galindez You’re right about it not being a true investment, but if you are going to keep the car, PPF and ceramic coatings are two ways to preserve the paint and they certainly cost less than a full paint job. In my 20 years of driving, I’ve only been in one accident which was a freak occurrence. Sure it may not be a high end car that will net you any returns, but that’s true with the majority of cars that are on the road today. This is topic is fairly subjective and all comes back to how you want to take care of your possessions.
@petegalindez9961
@petegalindez9961 3 жыл бұрын
@@megatron98 Agree mostly. If you are keeping the car, it's important to note that ceramic coating does not last the entire life of the car. Depending upon how much $$$ you spend (could be 1,000s) you'll have to get it re-done every few years or up to 8 or 9 years for the high end stuff. And, same with the PPV, unless you get the high end stuff, it peels, yellows, etc..adding more cost. My dad has a 2013 Honda Accord. Just bought a new front bumper cover for it for $250, already painted and installed it himself; he's 82. If he had done PPV/ceramic since new in 2013, it would be a lot more than $250 if you use quality stuff. If it's more to make it easier to keep clean after off-roading, or you live off dirt roads, makes a ton more sense. But, like you said, it's all subjective. I just think the coating stuff is a bit overhyped. I have it on my TESLA and not on my Honda. I clean both cars at the same time and there isn't much different when you clean them correctly, plus, I like cleaning my cars and detailing them. Again, to each their own.

I've had a Toyota minivan for 10 years. Spends a lot of time outdoors. Paint job looks fine. It's the dings and dents that are noticable more than any accumulated paint flaws/damage. Let's see, my wife hit a deer and a mailbox. I've been rear ended at a stop light. It's nice to keep a new vehicle looking nice for awhile but eventually you are going to get that first door ding or mishap and I don't plan on driving myself crazy over it.
