Hey Sam! The S in the D/S button is for Sequential not ‘Sport’. Sequential only speeds up the gear changes. The sport mode is selected using the IDS button, this will stiffen the steering, stiffen the suspension, increase throttle response and also engage the sequential mode which speeds up gear changes. Secondly you are comparing apples to oranges, the Telluride and Pallisade are not in the same class even if they have some of the technologies you mentioned. You cannot compare their ride quality, cabin noise levels, fit and finish, AWD tech and reliability (especially Lexus and Acura) to vehicles in the MDX class such as Lexus and Infiniti. Lastly I prefer the manual push down of the 3rd row seats to slow electronic buttons and I think cameras in the rear view mirrors are tacky and not classy.... However I do agree with you on the Hybrid situation, it’s backward thinking on Acura part and I also agree with you on the touch screen though I prefer the scroll wheel/touchpad as I hate fingerprints on screens. Acura should have offered both just like Mercedes does.

It’s 62K for the fully loaded Advance Package, if a cheaper Hyundai Palisade has message seats, ventilated 2nd row seats, power folding 3rd row, and Highlander has digital rear view mirror, then there is no excuse for Acura not to offer more features. No one would have to complain if this is a Honda Pilot with cheaper price, but again, this is Acura, and it’s the most expensive Acura besides the NSX and Type S MDX.

They start at 47k, with the things that come standard, you wont find another luxury suv at that price. I think that was the aim, it is their biggest seller so why change whats not broken. Its not a CON, just another option for consumers who want luxury with the quality and without the luxury price.

Great review Sam, same goes for the other reviews you did on this car. Like BW below I too am in due diligence to replace my ‘O6 MDX w >220kmi. Other than your cons, I’m stuck on what some might consider trivial. Can you or anyone else tell me why a panoramic sunroof comes standard on all packages, but fog lights only come on A-Spec & Advance pkgs? Plus if I want to get fog lights on Tech Pkg, which appear to be the most available stock in NE US lots, the cost is over $500, And only operable as push button lower dash, not on light cluster/auto option. Next trivial con is the roof rails optional on all, except for Advance pkg? For an SUV, this just seems to me to be a simple over sight, especially if you opt to add cross rails. Last is the “copper anodized” interior trim on the tech pkg. just not as appealing as the other trim that come std on a-Spc and Advance, IMO. And I was told by three dealers that it couldn’t be switched out aftermarket. None of these are game changers, but thought it would compliment your review and maybe even get me some answers.

Car manufacturers have tons of gimmicks to add $$$ to the cost of the car. To me it makes no sense that you are buying a luxury car and u still have to add options. If you claim to sell luxury vehicles simplify your trims entry level mid level and a luxury, if u buy luxury include ALL options! If acura does not listen to the customer, they will end up loosing customers cause Korean car makers are gaining market very quickly

Sam, I agree with all your points. Even the S package on the new MDX only has a few more HP vs the middle motor 55TFSI on the Q7 and the times on acceleration are very close. Size wise and comparing it to the 55TFSI Audi Q7 78k vs the Audi S MDX 73k I would still lean towards the Q7. It was better than driving 2L Audi Q7 but no where close to the telluride’s engine. I still think mdx build quality and etc is better than Kia. But they missed a huge opportunity here. I still remember the wow factor when I test drove v6 engine in 2016 RDX, the mild engine whistling sound and the punch it offered is no longer the case in mdx 2022. I agree to price point, amenities, comfort, performance and what the competitors are doing with their SUV offerings. What i am most concern about is why Acura has not figured out a way to still have performance combined with better efficiency. Efficient has not improved on the J37 engine, they have reduced HP and torque. 2nd and 3rd generation MDX proved the engines are reliable, very much capable of handling heavy loads for a vehicle thats 2.5 tons. So why not give us an engine management system that can fit specific tasks? In terms of ergonomic seating, MDX has a very good driving position but the seat could benefit from further bolster and better leg support. There should be seating configuration for 6, adds a feeling of luxury and more individual space, after all this is supposed to be a luxury SUV. Touch screens should be standard. Rim size, 18 inch is a good size, but do we really need 20 inch, can we justify ride quality to be better or worst? Like to hear opinions. Certainly the V6 should have a Higher HP than what is currently offered.

I don’t think not having a hybrid in Acura’s line up is going to hinder their sales. Acura is a GOOD product for it’s price point, it’s exceptional. I speak from experience, having owned a BMW, Audi and Lexus, my first Acura surprised me, I was impressed with the driving quality. It seems like your opinions are personal about Acura, and your objections are minimal. At the end of the day it’s all about preference, and mine is betting on the underdog (Acura)

What's unfortunately is that consumers tend listen to many reviewers who review cars based on a few days of driving them, who have little sense, who compare cars based on technical specs and gimmicks. I think that the 2022 MDX is a very very fine car, although it lacks a few gimmicks offered by competitors. What's most disappointing to me about the MDX is that it was designed to be a 3-row vehicle for dwarfs. I would rather have a 2-row vehicle in which everyone sits comfortably. Manufacturers unfortunately are also influenced by these superficial judgements, like "or that suv has 3 rows, so it's better than this one with only 2 rows". They need to be more courageous to be the right products that make sense.

@@SamCarLegion Sam, you give the public free content, which by and large is informative. So for that, we ought to be appreciated. Let me rephrase it this way. Most of what you deem as the 2022 MDX's shortcomings might not be what Honda missed. Let me start with one feature that you mentioned in a positive light, and which I totally agree with. This is the feature that lets you push a button to close the trunk, and the car waits a few seconds and then closes it. This is an extremely thoughtful design, which is even more useful than the "kick to open/close the trunk" feature. Most people are more likely to need help closing the trunk than opening it. That minute feature gives a hint that Honda is actually quite thoughtful in its designs. So, I don't view the lack of a powered folding third row is miss. This is what I meant by comparing cars based on specs. I drove a shiny brand new rental Ford Expedition (model 2019), which drove really nice. It had powered folding third row. I couldn't get it fold the third row. Had to do it manually. Now the Ford needed it. It had that feature. It didn't implement that feature very well. The MDX does not need it and does not have it. You were standing right there. The third row is within reach. Just reach out and push it down. You don't even have to extend your arms. Further, the people who buy the 2022 MDX are likely not going to need that third row regularly. So, most of the time, the third row is down. Why add a tech feature to increase cost and possibilities of failure, when there's little need for it? So, it is something that Acura misses when you compare specs, but practically speaking, I don't think so. Another example is your complaint that Acura used essentially the same engine from the previous model that lacks features like a hybrid option. Now, a hybrid option is a real thing and many want that feature for a valid reason. But this is harder to explain than the previous example of the powered folding 3rd row, so let me give you an analogy. I just replaced my Honda lawn mower with a battery powered mower. The new mower is better than the Honda in virtually many ways, except one. The Honda mower is nearly 20 years old. That's saying something about Honda. Now, that Acura V6 is tried and true. Each iteration, Honda made it a little better. The fact that it is just a minor improvement from the previous model, and does not have fancy options, is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm glad you had 3 weeks of driving the Acura. This is infinitely better than those "reviews" from guys who spend 2 hours to review cars from dealerships. And I thank you for providing information and perspectives, some of which are very useful.
