This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Acura MDX. The all-new Acura MDX is longer, lower and wider than the last model with a vastly improved suspension and handling thanks to a double wishbone front suspension and independent rear suspension. Acura improved the rigidity of this all-new 2022 MDX to handle the increased power from the Type S MDX, which will arrive later this year. The base Acura MDX is a 7-passenger 3-row SUV with a 3.5L V6 engine and a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The new transmission gets the most out of the 290hp 3.5L V6 and with the standard drive modes, this MDX can be very smooth and refined or sporty with the touch of a button. The design of this latest 2022 Acura MDX is more refined and upscale, with four trim including the sportier looking MDX A Spec trim. The upcoming Type S MDX will have a 3.0L twin-turbocharged engine with 355hp. The new MDX sits on a 2.8 inch longer wheelbase and a stance that is 1.4 inches wider. The biggest change is the dash to axle ratio which has been extended by 4 inches lengthens the hood line. The base model comes nicely equipped with a 12.3-inch display screen with true touchpad interface, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Heated front seats, Wireless Apple Carplay & Android Auto, Wireless smartphone charging, Driver seat memory, Heated power adjusting side mirrors, LED headlights and taillights, Panoramic moonroof, Power tailgate and 19-inch wheels. Great review. Made me change my perception of it. Very balanced review. I agree the GV80 is amazing, however the MDX for the price is amazing and undercuts the price of the GV80 by thousands of dollars

Lol, when they included the Hyundai Palisade in the list of alternatives, right out of the bat, you know that you get "great value" with the Palisade as Hyundai is "NOT" a luxury brand. Acura MDX top trim = $67,000, Hyundai Palisade top trim = $54,000. Huge difference in numbers!!!

I love the format of this kind of car review comparing to other traditional format. For MDX, you will not regret. it is a fabulous car. I had drive it for several months (advanced mode) and I am super happy with it. I also had a MDX 2007 model (2 generations back) and this new generation is even better. The only improvement I'd suggest is to get rid of touch pad and offer a touch screen. other than that, it is a perfect car.

@@aetiusg The RX is due for a redesign, no question. I’m a long-time RX owner myself having had my RX since brand new in 2010. I love my vehicle! But I am very impressed with the new MDX, even though I really don’t need this big of a vehicle as I don’t need third row seats. But I really do like the exterior design on the new MDX!

It's great to see Honda incorporating some of their best 'old school' tech in this awesome MDX. For example, my 2012 TSX Wagon has a double wishbone front suspension...helps it to handle like a sporty sedan. Thanks for an entertaining review.

Like when the original came out... this new MDX truly hits the mark on value and size (3rd row). It looks sharp and expensive, especially at around $50 grand. I can’t imagine that the Americans or the Germans can even come close with what is on offer with this new Acura. Well done Honda! Great review guys... it was worth the wait. Thanks for the video.

.... because they (CR) only looked at last year and years past models. Besides CR reports are a guess... at best. Just look at where (and who) they get their numbers from. Would I recommend the prior MDX? Short answer... Never.

Unfortunately Acura is a premium Honda and way overpriced, especially for US market. People would buy Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palaside, or for true luxury would go for BMW or Mercedes. Acura and Infinity are struggling in the US market. Now they even have Genesis to compete. That is why their resale values are very low. You loose so much money spending on an Acura.

@@kellingtonlink956 CR does have a rolling average and surveys paying subscribers. But we are buying a single model in a single year and it an average. If they don't have enough respondents on a certain model they forecast. The current RDX was recommended when it came out then dropped and eventually dropping the score. I have never seen the MDX recommended. Even the new Honda Passport was not.recommended right out of thr gate. I think CR is onto Honda and Acura problems these days.

The MDX has an elegance about its appearance. I think it would be stunning in black The all black interior is a bit severe, but livable. I'd personally be cross-shopping the Aviator and the MDX. Excellent work as always, very enjoyable video.

Regarding the push button shifter.... a couple really nice benefits of that system is you don't have to put the vehicle in park to exit the vehicle. Just open the drivers door & it automatically goes into park while the engine remains running (handy for a short exit i.e. to grab your mail). And better yet, simply push the stop engine button when parking, and the trans automatically goes into park as well. These functions streamline your motions. Maybe that is why Acura has embraced this system....it's all about functionality.

I love my leased 2019 MDX….however I just found out that I can not trade the MDX for another brand of vehicle. Acura forces those who lease their vehicles to turn the car into the Acura leasing company….or trade it in for another Acura! No choice! Don’t lease Acuras if you prefer choice for your next car.

What a great review. So much so I test drove a MDX Tech Package with navigation today. I currently have a 2020 Audi Q5 Premium Plus. This package lacks a heated steering wheel, hands free tailgate and fog lights which mine has. This is my second Audi. My lease is up in 15 months so I thought I’d start looking to see if there was something bigger and better but not the price of the Q7 with the options I want. Acura did a great job on the exterior. I love the diamond starburst grill and the new lines. The wheel size matches the vehicle. When I got into the vehicle I felt like I was sitting in a cockpit wrapped around me. Not the feel I was hoping for. I was expecting more distance between driver and passenger in a bigger vehicle like our daughter’s Passport. My husband is 6’4” and he was cramped in the second row sitting behind my driving position with minimal headroom to the roof. As I started driving I could feel the heaviness in the steering. My husband mentioned he could feel the heaviness and leaning into the corners as if being too heavy. The Q7 doesn’t feel heavy. Even though it has a double wishbone suspension it still has the Acura feel of a slight vibration throughout the test drive as our 2006 RSX did. The engine seemed a little under powered for the weight of this vehicle. Don’t get me wrong the MDX is a GREAT vehicle from the previous version but it’s not what I was hoping for or looking for. It’s definitely a luxury SUV. The interior is upscale and I like the new button shifter. The Passport has it as well. With a few more refinements in some areas and additional options that I would expect at this price point, I would reconsider it later down the road.

Zach, very Spot On..... "The Best SUV , I've driven in a log, long, time".... Just got mine on Friday, 8/20/21. A 2022 MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl / Graystone interior . Took my "equity" in my 2019 MDX Advance of $3k Plus the $1k Loyalty form Acura , added $1500 Cap Cost plus taxes / fees and signed a new lease for $600 per month. It's much better than a Telluride (too Floaty for me) and a Highlander . The Acura represents an outstanding Value. When I got the 2019 , which replaced my 2016 Infiniti QX60 , I was happy with the better styling over the QX60 (which was Bloated Station Wagon - good car , roomy , comfortable but Dull), but

Great review. I'm 73 years old and I have to tell you the shift buttons are so easy to use and so is the track pad. The track pad is so accurate and intuitive with great response. You can type out a word as fast as you like and if you make a mistake you swipe back to delete a letter. It takes about one day to practice and I love it over the 2017 RDX which I traded in for the 2022 MDX Platinum Elite). You are going to love the Heads Up Display (especially for the speed limit which you can change from Kilometers to Miles display and the navigation and other Apps which you can scroll through). This is one great vehicle with style and class way above anything else within in 20K of its price range .

You make a valid point Zack about the pricing of the MDX versus the GV 80. However, I think the reason the MDX is priced lowered than the GV80 is because it uses an older engine that was simply carried over. That didn't cost them much if anything to simply put that into this new body. With the GV 80, it is an entirely new SUV from the ground up with a new powertrain. That costed them a lot of money to develop. Also, Acura knowing knew they would bring the Type S model with the new MDX so pricing the standard 3.5 V6 lower than the competitors is rightful done with room for the Type S to be priced in the mid 70s. I agree with you that the Genesis GV80 is priced on the high side. I bet there's a lot of wiggle room for discount when the sales are way lower than predicted.

Very nice review ! Given what you said throughout the video I think IMHO that the Telluride SX-P/L Night (Fall/Sky) beside the driving dynamics offers more features and has similar if not more luxury than the 2022 MDX not mentioning the aggressive look !

The Acura team makes good cars. They went through a less appealing design period for a while, but now, the new products (RDX, TLX and MDX) look nice and dynamic. The driving dynamics were there because they are a Honda trademark. Let's hope Infiniti is the next one to experience a renaissance through their upcoming line of design.

When I was a kid, Saturday mornings was cartoons, now it's u guys. Nice ride and value. I'm happy Acura is turning themselves Around. This should b more than enough for snow. Please confirm. My wife is a leftie too and our son, so they feel your pain Andrea. Our son is in China at university, and when he learned to speak read and write mandarin the teachers seemed to struggle with him being being a leftie. My friends have the RDX it’s just a gorgeous vehicle up close, the build quality is exceptional. The only strange part is when you open the hood there’s this tiny little engine sat in there, kind of looks a little odd. Great review again guys, summer is coming 👍👍👍 we survived another winter!!!!

I fully agree with your GV 80 analysis. For that price there's not a chance I'd buy the Genesis. Not to mention the resale value. The MDX is going to hold its value on the resale market much better IMHO.

I agree with Zack and Andrea.. Looks like a great SUV.. But I just wish it were more traditional on a few things. Be nice to see a traditional shifter, and more traditional dashboard, like oversized physical buttons/knobs to control things.. Also some more interior room would make this nicer too.. Simply raising the roofline 2" ro 3" inches would have made this a MUCH better vehicle.. I know this would hurt MPG some.. But I would gladly trade less MPG - for the better comfort, more room and better visibiltiy that a higher roofline would give you. The Kia Telluride is taller and more traditional design and Kia is selling them like crazy.

Wonder if the double wishbone suspension will have the same annoyances like my old Accord. The biggest problem with double wishbone suspension is that all the weight is riding on the upper and lower ball joints and that caused a lot of wear on them and was the wear item that had to be addressed frequently.

I'm a lefty and ...does my life suck because of it? I think not. But there are times ....trying to find a left-hand guitar I like. Showing up for golf lessons back in the 90s and the instructor had to go back to his trunk to see if he had any left-hand clubs. As a kid dealing with scissors for right-handed people, etc.

In this market segment, they are all nice. You can't go wrong with any of them. The Highlander is a no brainer because of it's reputation, resale and reliability of course. However if you choose the MDX, like all the MDX owners, you will be happy with your choice. It's a wonderful design. MDX rules!

I was going to give you thumbs down for saying in the opening -" This may be the best suv I've driven ..." since I thought that was too much to say given how many nice cars you have actually driven. However, when Andrea pointed out that it has a new transmission gear I let it pass since I didn't know that.This Acura only offers heated steering wheel on higher trim which is ridiculous for this price range.Secondly, there is no excuse for not having touch screen and the built in navigation is not good. This review was really good as I'm used to watching one man review and here it is the two of you contributing harmoniously , very nice.

Great review. Although slightly smaller, I’d still get the Porsche Macan or BMW X5. MDX would be strong 3rd choice.

All strong contenders. I love the way the Macan tail lights look at night. I way prefer the new styling of this MDX over the X5, but that's just my opinion.

i love the pop out 2row seat! converts to captains chair option. following and topping the automakers' trend! hope more follow THIS trend. i dont know if this car is any better than my 2022 santa fe SEL. better drive but still not the most preferred joy ride nor best off road SUV. Mdx tops my car because of 3rd capability and removable middle seat! other than that. safety feature, better fuel efficiency, better maintenance service. my poor man's GV80 stomps all over acura. my lease deal: 2022 SEL w/ prem. pack. 10kmile for 36mon-$1,000down +1st month + DMV for $394/mo. o did i mention? i have smartphone key, smartphone/alexa starter for whole lease period(3yrs)

I noticed a "galloping" (cluck, cluck like sound) coming from the infotainment system speakers when I started the vehicle recently. After doing a google search I learned it was a notification sound that there was an update available for the infotainment system. Went into settings and found and downloaded the update. It may have included other changes but now the navigation system works faster and will calculate long road trips (this was and issue I reported to Acura and also noted in my post 3 months ago). Acura advised me it was a software issue and they would work on the problem and there would be an update once they had the fix.

The Acura TLX Type S V6 motor is, from what I've read, a twin scroll single turbo. Do you think the MDX Type S version of the V6 will have two turbos, or will it be like the TLX Type S V6? I don't have any issues if it is a single turbo, and someone made the remark that the twin scroll single turbo is "more efficient" than two turbos (I'm not sure what that means.) Thanks and great review as usual!

The twin cam, twin scroll single turbo v6 was originally designed for the NSX. There are no brand new twin turbo v6 NSX's for sale right now. There won't be any twin turbo V6 for Type-S models as the transmission wasn't designed for it.
