On this episode we share our first impressions of the 2022 Acura MDX, and how this long standing name plate competes with other three-row SUVs in its segment. Consumer Reports, in collaboration with IIHS, recently released a list of safe and reliable new and used cars for teen drivers, and we discuss the criteria to make the list, as well as share our personal picks for which vehicles we would recommend. Other topics include: Electric vehicles for post-covid commuting; why the auto industry lacks standardization for manual modes on shifters; why some car manufacturers are more proactive in implementing new technology and making updates to their vehicles than others; and how to safely transport a pet in a vehicle.

You obviously don't understand the touchpad system if you discuss scrolling. You don't scroll with this system that's the point. After owning an Acura...within a week I was used to the touchpad. The one to one positioning allows you to glance at the screen when you touch the pad you know what point on the screen it relates. It actually becomes intuitive the more you use it. Car reviewers are in the car a very short amount of time. I think feedback from owners is more relevant.

Agreed! Reviews are subjective. I love that I don't have to deal with fingerprints in my screen and they give a a great palm rest by the TouchPad. I love my 2022 MDX A-Spec!

I've had this MDX for 2 weeks now and although I was quite nervous if I would get use to the touch pad, I now think it's great. I don't think these and other reviewers get it. You don't get a cursor and you don't "lose" your place when you lift your hand, because of the relative positioning. ie. Top right of pad is top right of screen, always!! Simple and logical. If I had both the touch pad and touch screen I would still use the pad. I've developed muscle memory as to where my favorite options are and often don't even have to look at the screen, which is safer. My only complaint is they did not employ relative positioning when using Android Auto or Apple Carplay. As for the rest of the car, so far it's been great.

At 18:15 you talk about reliability scores in the different categories. The problem that I have had at times, is that a car may only have one or possibly two categories that score less than 3 points (average), yet the car overall gets a one point score, which is to say "much lower than average" reliability score. So what is the waiting system that you use to derive the overall reliability score? Another thing that would be super helpful, is if there was some way to disregard a category such as infotainment (I apologize as I am too lazy to switch to another window and look up if that's the name of the category for in car electronics stuff) and then get the reliability score (because, say, maybe I just don't care about the infotainment because I'll not be using it or whatever reason, but I still want to know how it scores otherwise.) I have had the same thoughts about many of your other products that you review, that is, being able to disregard 1 of the categories that you score a device on. Just as an example, say maybe air purifiers. Maybe I don't care how loud it is on the top speed. I'd like to know than what score you would've given the device disregarding that one category. I'm sure this would be a big pain in the neck, but I'm guessing I'm not the only person that has thought about this. If anyone else has had these thoughts, please give this post alike so that Consumer Reports will know.

Sequential shifters on racing cars were push-to-downshift, pull-to-upshift to align with the powerful g-forces when a racing car brakes/accelerates. Probably not very relevant in a street car, but I always accepted that as the "correct" layout.

I own a new RDX, and while at first the touchpad seems dangerous and unintuitive; I spent a good amount of time in the garage just practicing with it. Now, weeks later, I’ve gotten very used to it, if I want to change a radio station, I’ll just use the easy steering wheel buttons, to set a destination, I use voice control. Not only do these things help with not using the touchpad, but if I have to, it’s much easier than the Lexus competition, since Acura uses 1:1 positioning on the touchpad.

I agree, it felt weird at first and acts different in Android auto but overall I'm used to it. Yes, it is less intuitive as a touch screen but I don't have to reach as far, screen always see so far away, and I don't have to look as far from the road. I would have liked if it was touch when stopped or for passengers to use buy not the deal breaker people think. Reality of driving is you plug in, it plays music, and you don't touch it the rest of your drive. The climate separate who's is way simpler and safer thanks going 5 menus to turn of heated seats.

For the Acura touchpad, all you have to do is spend some time with it and set all your presets and your home page items. I don't screw around with the infotainment system after that and I tend not to touch it once I am on the road since I concentrate on my driving. It took me some time to get use to it and I definitely agree its not a perfect system but it does work as intended.

If you shouldn't use it while driving, it's a dangerous design. Touchscreens are simply better in every way.

Upshift SHOULD be "pull back," and downshift should be "push forward." When sequential shifters were originally made first in race cars, they had it "pull up, push down." This is because when you're accelerating and being pushed back into the seat, it's easier to pull the stick back, and when you're braking and being pushed forward, it's easier to push the stick forward to downshift.

These msx’s have transmission whistling noises that is common for 22 ans 23. Dealer says it is normal and there is no fix for this problem. The noise starts at 30 mph in about 4 th gear. If you test drive one listen for it with the radio off, it gets louder, then drop it back to the dealer and then go to Lexus for a quiet drive.

My first car was a 1989 Honda Civic and it was great roundabout. If I was going to recommend a good used car for my teenage son or daughter, I'll keep it in the Honda family and recommend a 2016-17 Honda Accord 4cyl. It has great reliability, good fuel economy, easy to drive, the 4cyl has good enough power(not too fast, not too slow), good crash test results, and has available safety features.

Regarding the MDX, my wife and I tried the Volvo V90, Lincoln Navigator, the Telluride and Palisades and the Genesis. It seems that only Acura has headrests that adjust forward and back - a major point for my wife whose head was pushed forward in the others, causing uncomfortable neck cramps. Regarding the touch pad, I agree that if the pointer remained where it was for maybe 30 seconds it would be better. For me, I have painful shoulders and the touch pad avoided the long reaches in many of these vehicles to get to the touch screen, so this is a partial advantage for me. I am not a fan of turbo engines and the naturally aspirated 6 is very good, as you noted, with linear response and no sudden turbo boost. In fact, this drivetrain reminds me of the excellent 6 in my 2007 Audi A6 (with 195000 miles and NO repairs).

Perhaps it's worth pointing out an obvious point about the need for paddle shifters on some vehicles with conventional automatic, automated manual (i.e dual clutch), and CVT transmissions. In vehicles with a traditional gear selector lever the existence of paddle shifters may not be required or may well be redundant. That's the case with my DSG equipped GTI, for example, that allows a driver to select a particular gear either with the console mounted lever or its paddle shifters. Likewise, my KIA Sorento does not have paddle shifters but the console mounted selector allows me to choose a particular gear. However, vehicles with a push button or dial to control the transmission MUST have paddle shifters. Otherwise, there is no way for a driver to select a particular gear in situations that call for it. Thus, there are no paddle shifters on the KIA Telluride while the almost identical KIA Palisade has to include them. It's not simply a question of (often faux) "sportiness"; it's a question of necessity.

Just traded my leased 2019 MDX Advance for the 2022 MDX Advance. For me, the touch pad is just fine. I had the hang of it after just a couple of uses. I also think a touch screen that far away would be more distracting. I wanted the S-type MDX, but gave up waiting for that one.

We got our daughter, years ago, a used Mazda 3 and it's been rock solid for her through high school and into her early twenties. But now I see people getting a new Chevy Bolt EV for $21K (disclaimer I have a 2017) and it would last anyone so long without the ever increasing ICE repairs. And while the Bolt can go across country with planning, the early drivers are all short local trips. The only potential issue is the logistics of residential charging later on at college or the apartments that kids first house at.

Great show as always guys! Little disappointed in the top picks you guys came up with for top teen picks, but not picking more environmentally friendly picks. We chose the Kia Niro PHEV for our 17 year old son. His commute to school is 9 miles, so he is able to get to and from school on EV power alone, the power is sufficient for a teenager, but not overwhelming, and lastly, it’s not too small, and not too big. Nice review on the MDX. Having owned two of them over the years, though, both times I was duped. The drivetrain is incredibly good (I love non-turbo engines), and the interior room is deceptively big. BUT, the infotainment system is THE worst in the industry in my view, or maybe second worst next to Honda (related). It looks great, but so difficult to use, overwhelmed by that unnecessarily large mode button in the center of the dash. Most will set it and forget it. Could have used a better layout. Having CarPlay/Android Auto makes it a bit more appealing, but overall, I describe their infotainment system as death by 1,000 papercuts…and Acura has always been that way…like I said, I bought a 2005 and loved it for a while, but the infotainment drove me crazy. So, sold it after a year. We then leased a 2015 a decade later that was all redesigned, drove great and love it for about 2 months before the infotainment system drove me nuts. Turned it in early and took the loss I hated it so much…I was hoping the new re-design was better since I do believe they make the best drive train and have great seats…But, after spending some time in it…it’s the same crappy system dressing in a different outfit. Too bad. Glad you guys keyed on that because most reviewers/journalists/KZfaqrs only focus on the SHAWD and the great driving dynamics of the vehicle (which are great), but that’s only part of the experience.

Manual mode should be pull for upshift and push for downshift. If I'm gaining speed and need another gear, it's easier to pull the shifter back. Under braking when I want to downshift, it's easier to push the shifter. My TL is backwards and it drives me mad.

Apparently I am pretty good at anticipating what CR says is a good car for kids. Bought new in 2013 a Subaru Legacy with Eyesight. Kids will be driving in less than two years. The car will have about 140,000 on it at that point (9 years old), but very reliable. So probably a good car to start on. Lexus and Acura both have horrible controls - glad to see they agree on that. Lexus is marginally better as they state but both are "features" we all can do without.

Hi CR, No discussion of safety is complete without including the obvious need to lower speed limits. Despite all the increased safety features in modern cars, driver and pedestrian fatalities are increasing. Across all age categories, the objective evidence clearly demonstrates that far too much HP is controlled by far too little driving IQ. It is time for sane speed limits that increase safety and reduce CO2 emissions simultaneously. 55 saves lives and helps save the planet for the next generation.

@@user-tb7rn1il3q There are plenty of private race tracks and 'track days' where enthusiasts can indulge their 'need for speed'. In the past speed limits were lowered due to a sudden shortage of oil called the 'energy crisis'. Now we have a global climate crisis and we can no longer afford the indulgent production of excess CO2 that comes with needlessly elevated velocity on the highways. Simply put, a vehicle driving 75 mph will burn at least 20% more fuel than it would at 55.

The more these car from the Korean try to impress the less reliable they become. For example my 2013 Honda Accord came with a back up camera standard in which we were happy to have, but for giving us that improvement in side the cabin Honda took away the wish bone suspension, gave the car cheaper quality Brakes , a no good Starter and so on. The thing is when people are shopping for car, they only look at the bells and whistles inside not the actual quality of the parts that make up the car so that the Second and third buyers can enjoy a good used car.
