I have had a chance to drive both of these exact models. It was tempting to consider the Mach E because I could buy it on the spot instead of waiting. But when I went back to sit in the BMW again, I was reminded of how much it is worth waiting for. Both my wife and I did not like the glass roof of the Mustang. It felt very hot in the Colorado sun in April I could not imagine the summer. But the i4 is just so much nicer to sit in.

Yes we appreciated the regular opening sunroof with a blind ..as long as you re not hauling a large family with lots of luggage the i4 size will be sufficient for most but we agree some may decide on basis of waiting times

Thank you - Never thought I would be cross shopping a ford and bmw - but these are the two models in my final list (wife doesn’t like the South Korean brands for some reason) - thank you for this video!

The driver's assistance package is an option for $1700 bringing the price to $57,000. BMW is famous for its pricey options. I added sapphire-metallic black exterior ($550), the drivers and parking assistance packages, HUD which includes the premium package (ambient lighting, lumbar support, heated front seats, and steering wheel), wireless charging, and drive recorder to my i4 order bringing the total cost to 61K. However, the real rival to the i4, Tesla, offers the FSP package which is required for autopilot and costs $12K. When you consider you'd have to wait for FSP and autosteer on the street, while all you really get is autopilot, the cost is really high. On the Tesla adding the exterior color of my choice, black, would be an additional $1.5K.The total for the Tesla will be $61K without any of the other features I have for the i4. I agree BMW should have added this but so should Tesla. Sad but nickel and diming of consumers is the name of the game.

I think you're the first one to make this comparison. That said, this is a skewed comparison since while the price range matches, the i4 eDrive40 is more like a Mach-E Premium ER RWD while the Mach-E GT is more comparing to the i4 M50 xDrive. I recently got to test a Mach-E ER Premium AWD and was very impressed by the drive and tech, and its 450km range is nothing short of amazing considering its size & AWD. I prefer a lower more sportier ride like the i4, but I'm slightly annoyed you have to go for the pricey $76k M50 to get xDrive, while Ford offers the Mach-E with AWD in every trim regardless of battery size. That said the price is very similar with the Mach-E Premium ER AWD and given one is a Ford while the other is a BMW, I'm leaning towards the latter. That said I heard from a BMW dealer in Toronto that the wait-list on the i4 is close to a year, while the Ford dealer quoted 6 months. How is the i4 space compare to the Polestar 2? I also driven the latter and while I enjoyed it the Mach-E definitely feels faster despite being down on power, and my family who was also on the drive complained about the Polestar 2 rear seat space, but were fine with the Mach-E interior volume. I'm not even thinking of Tesla mainly down to the company's reputation of poor quality, very anti-consumer business practices and the fact I openly detest their CEO. Thanks for the detailed review on both cars.

Yes indeed likely so ..unusual comparison but more practical than our previous Volvo to Porsche comparo lol ..Polestar 2 seemed larger than i4 for rear space it is also taller driving position but lower than Mach E ..we re about to test the C40 which should be cross shopped with P2 ..Ford has many more versions to choose from and agreed BMW should offer awd even on base version ..like it's bigger brother iX which even in base version 40 offers awd ..perhaps in time ? In the end your decision may depend on waiting time .may recommendation is try and find a car in stock by shopping cross province or even cross country perhaps? Maybe even make an offer on a demo ? Let us know what you chose please !

Nice review. I wonder if you set the fan to unlimited (instead of automatic) on the i4 if it would charge faster? I know automatic limits the volume but it might just be at certain hours of the day.

I m pretty sure we turned off climate ..even though it was pretty cold outside ..we are aware of the effect of cabin heater on charging speed for sure..

@@TEVAssociation sorry I didn't mean the HVAC controls, I meant the battery cooling option. At least at one point while you were scrolling through I noticed the fan speed was set to automatic, there is also an unlimited option (which might be louder but also might charge faster?).

We did ..set fast charger as destination so it should have preconditioned the battery

These are the exact two models I’m cross shopping. First off I’m a huge fan of Tesla and Elon Musk but both of my business partners have Teslas and Teslas have a few non starters for me such as no Apple CarPlay, no antennae which means no AM radio or Sirius XM and no opening sunroof, also no rebate. I live in southern CA so the charging network isn’t an issue, plenty of options. The Mustang Mach E has two dings, no opening sunroof and no leather option The BMW has two dings, super ugly kidney grille and small back seat area Each of these offers the complete opposite of the competitive vehicle dings, Mach E has a great looking grille and plenty of rear room and the i4 has a sunroof that opens and leather. Since all four of these dings are non starters for me, I have to accept two of the dings and I’m torn. I’m leaning towards the Mach E GT Performance but those two dings really bug me. I seriously don’t understand why 99% of vehicle manufacturers don’t offer opening sunroofs and leather. Those of us that like tech aren’t all vegans. I want leather in my EV!

BMW may be the emotional choice and Ford a reasonable choice ..but if you re tall and your kids too rear seat space may be a deal breaker

mustang gt is more expensive and much faster than the e40. but once you bring the bmw i4 m50 its a different stpry

Please do your job better holy crap, typical of one of the millions of people trying to do car reviews. The price that you say is so far off it’s unreal. Price out a Mach E Gt performance and add everything, it’s pretty much loaded, not much you can Add. By the time you put all the options on the Bmw (M50, because that’s what you should be comparing anyway)it’s about the same. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes all do that crap because they know lazy inexperienced reviewers only point out the price without all the shit you would option it with. The price for the bmw in Canada with all the packages to match the Mach e Gt performance gets up to the same price. Please stop! Go back to doing what you used to do. Damn annoying

Tesla has nothing to worry about. It’s actually a joke of a car. Compare BMW i3 to this BMW i4. The BMW i3 is superior to this turkey.
