I've had my 2022 R 18 Bagger for 2 months now and have been loving it. There are many pros and cons, but the pros far outweigh them.

Just bought the R18 Transcontinental today at the Riverside dealership only had 4 miles on the odometer. We had to run up the mileage to 100 for me to get an extra 4000 off for a demo discount on top of the 3000 dollars customer cash bmw is offering, on top off the first 4 payments that BMW will pay for you, on top off the 0% APR for 48 months bmw is offering...It's crazy how deeply discounted these bikes are right now... I hope these really catch on so BMW can keep on making/support these models. They are a piece of art to look at.

Brother Moss, I have owned my new R18 T for 4 days and you read my mind, Every day I love it more and more. First test ride, I walked away, came back for second test ride, bought it. I am in Scotland where these bikes are ultra-rare, the only other one I have seen was riding to the same dealership as me for my second test ride. Great, honest video man

I just bought my loaded R18B in Manhattan Metallic from a Harley dealership which was sitting on the showroom floor for months. They couldn't sell this trade in and would reduce the price accordingly. I picked it up for $17K plus tax (no other fees) out the door. They claimed to have lost money on the deal but was happy to get it out of the showroom. For the money, you get so much more than other manufacturers and it's a beautiful bike! I'm still clinging onto my 2008 1200 Sportster and 2020 Sport Glide since I too have no business buying this behemoth beast but if I can tame her and love her like my others, I'll consider staying with BMW and sell the Harley(s).

Great video. I've owned several BMWs over the years and have a few motorcycles in the stable now. But my HD ElectraGlide is getting way up there in mileage and I've been shopping to replace it. New HDs are crazy expensive, so I was looking at low-mileage 1-owners, but even those are still pretty pricey. Came across this exact model at our local BMW dealer. You're right about the price. Shockingly less expensive than comparable Harleys. Took it for a test ride and liked it. Still undecided. Was stunned to see the specs. Listed at 877 lbs. Heavier than my E-Glide Classic! But I thought it feels really light while riding. The feel reminded me of the R12C I owned back in the early 2000s. And you're right about the position of your feet. The heads require the floorboards and controls to be under your knees, as opposed to forward like on Harley or Japanese tourers. I'd say it reminded me of the position from my K1200LT. Not exactly sportbike, but definitely not traditional cruiser/touring geometry. So riders with longer legs might find that less comfortable. My impression is it's a high quality, well-executed machine. I enjoyed my test ride. Not sure if I'm going to buy it or not, but I appreciate the great video. You covered some things I was wondering about. Well done.

Thanks for sharing. Yesterday, I test road the R18 B and the K1600 Bagger. Both really fun for very different reasons. I have a BMW R 1250 RS, so I'm used to and love the boxer engine. I like your delivery, "I now listen to music while I ride and I didn't remove the green things from the panniers, why? Because screw that"... LOL As for Harley, they have the culture, apparel as well as the "my friends have Harleys so I bought one". It's also an American brand for those that feel like supporting the U.S. even though I'm guessing a majority of Harley parts are made in China. Like the R18, my RS is another under appreciated amazing bike from BMW. I did a video about Harley vs. BMW culture and I think that is where BMW drops the ball is building the culture / connectedness. They need some high profile ambassadors to assist in pushing the brand and models forward. I think the last time they had a big win in that area was with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on the "Long Way Round" series, which helped catapult the BMW GS into the spotlight. It would be interesting to hear a list of reasons why you like the R18 better than your Harley. Anyway, Nice review and enjoy the ride!

I’ll have a look at your video comparison, and you’re right the culture/enthusiasm is missing here. It’s a shame, so much potential in this segment for BMW and they’re not taking advantage at all.

Man, what a beautiful and well equipped bike you have there! Congratulations. You know? Here in Europe Harley is still in first place on this type of bike, but between what they offer and now this proposal of BMW, I think that Harley will lose some customers to BMW. And I’m one them, because if I go for a Bagger I probably would go for a Chieftain Dark Horse, but the price tag is much higher than a BMW R18 Beggar. So, I’m not looking twice to the subject . That adaptive cruise control is a fine feature of the BMW Beggar and is something that none of the other brands offer right now on the Market. Here we have emissions strict rules and noise too, so the bikes can’t be very loud. That’s why this point (the pipe’s sound is not an issue). If you want your motorcycle to be street legal you have to preserve the stock pipes in place and originally mounted. Be well and thank you for the video! Ride safe !

I’m a UK 🇬🇧 owner of a R18 Transcontinental and absolutely love it and she will grow on you, and I feel very under-looked bike even though every where I go a lot of people are interested in her including non bikers. hear in the uk The equivalent harly spec to spec was about 10 grand more than the r18 T. The R18 to me is a Unique and has its own soul for a bmw and very different in its own way. I think why it’s not popular is cost and the harly effect and also lack of awareness in the community. But I find it amazing every biker location I go to on her there is always bikers looking and asking questions even harly riders. So in so,e respects maybe she needs time but on the other hand I do like my bike will be the only or a few at a bike event ride or on tour unlike if fo example a GS witch in the uk seams like every other bike.

Good review. I bought the exact same bike as yours yesterday. I took it for a test ride after watching reviews, and found most of the influencers are drastically overblowing different criticisms. I had a Indian Challenger last summer and that thing was a nice bike, but really just felt cheap around the edges. Looked at this and a HD Street/Road Glide, but the value on these things is crazy right now. I got one for 0% interest for up to 5 years, and they are paying the first four payments. Comparable HD would be 10k more, and right out of the gate I'd have to change the suspension on it. Fit/finish is really beautiful and it's just different looking.

I have a 19 heritage which I really like, about 700 lbs black and chrome...btw way it just has a regular cruise set up which I use all the time. Just rider preference. The one thing I'm not sure about bmw is that the dealer has to reset the maintenance interval even if you do the work yourself and they charge to reset. Big turnoff for me. Good job.

I own the R18 Classic, don't make the mistake of falling for the look and/or the attractive BMW incentives as I did especially if you live in a congested city. Those two massive cylinders get very hot in stop-and-go traffic. Your knee is basically at 90 degrees all the time and it is impossible to stretch your legs. I am 5'-10" and I have to bend/lean a little forward to reach the handlebar comfortably. I now came to understand that the boxer engine is truly a bad idea for a cruiser. Make sure you understand this bike; it is a beautiful bike but is an expensive utility for a weekend ride on an open road.

I have a Classic as well. I’ve not experienced the overheating but could see that happening. To your point this is not the bike I would own for city riding or commuting. It’s big and heavy. But that’s perfect for my rides through small Texas towns and the Interstate. Same could be said for my Road Glide. Not a city bike. People should think more about how they ride vs looks. Could you please describe its vibrations? I don’t mean whether it bothers you or not, but others say it’s very noticeable over 3,000 rpm and gets stronger as revs climb. I am interested in one for all reasons you like it but any buzzing of my hands, feet and seat would be a deal breaker. Goldwing, Indian and even the single cylinder Vespas don’t buzz. Shaking at idle is not a concern.
@AHMoss
@AHMoss Жыл бұрын
It’s a tough one to describe but here’s my attempt. At lower rpms 3k or less the vibrations are minor unless moving and under load. I’d almost argue at 3000+ the frequency almost smooths it down. It’s no more or less than an HD past 3k, below that range think of a bad gas station foot massage chair thing lol. You’d have to test ride one to actually make your own argument regarding the vibrations. Compared a Goldwing, even a K1600 has noticeable vibration.

@@AHMoss Thanks for that info. I know the big Guzzi 1400 series uses isolastic mounts…and larger Harleys? Shakes at idle but smooth above. Guzzi 1400 discontinued and hard to sell. I wonder if the 1800 will wind up the same. Interesting how Indian 111 is smooth even at idle except for a little buzz in the floorboards around 2,800. I have about a thousand miles on various 111 models via renting and demo events. Hope the local BMW dealer will offer a test ride. Since I posted a month ago the BMW demo truck came to Orange County, CA and I made the 200+ mile round trip to participate. They had a nice course mapped out for about 20 minutes but OC being what it is, they kept us on boulevards. Top speed about 45mph. This meant using lower gears to get a sense of vibration. Intensity increased with RPM. Was comfortable under 2,500 which I hear gets you to 75mph in 6th. I rode a TC. Some say character but I’d have to keep it reviving low for any distance. If I had to describe the demo in one word it would be “awkward.” This is not a bike you just get on and go. It would take time to get used to it. As many have said, the pedal ergos on both sides are just wrong. Not sure what could be done. Good that the “front” brake activated both because I could never find the brake pedal without hunting. If not for the huge discounts, I wouldn’t give it a second thought after the ride. Disappointing. As to weight, it’s no heavier than any competitor but it feels heavy. Torque reaction and a very tall first gear contribute to an insecure feel off the line and at slow speed. Just one man’s observations after 30 years on a Cavalcade.

For me it's about the comfort on long rides....that foot position just doesn't look like it would work for me for many hours on the saddle

I haven’t take a cross state trip yet (coming this week!) but I did ride close to 60 miles non stop with no issues. For reference I’m 5’10” about 200lbs and very comfortable on the bike. But can understand this position not making sense to a lot of people of different height/weight

You will hear valve train clatter with a harley too. Same general setup...ie push rod actuated valves etc. At least harley has hydraulic lifters where r 18 doesn't.

Harley is still selling motorcycles?

the surprising part is they’re not doing too bad either

Nobody talks about how easy this bike turns in because of the boxer engine’s gyroscopic effect. The initial turn in is easier and faster than 883/cb400/h2/r9t

So are these things really not selling, or is BMW just intentionally flooding the market/putting plenty out there so they can pick up in popularity?
@AHMoss
@AHMoss Жыл бұрын
BMW definitely pushed more of these than they should have, COVID release with near minimal demand. they’re slowly getting more attention from buyers, incentives do attract a lot of new blood

@@AHMoss I rode an R18 B at Sturgis last year and have wanted one ever since. I hope the incentives stay long enuff for me to grab one.. It just blows my mind that BMW Harley and Indian all have enormous test rides set up next to each other on Lazelle and every one just flocks to Harley like sheep. They won’t even give the others a glance. I ride a vintage Harley btw.

@angershark88 the Harley will always have the masses, between history and its culture it’s arguably the most iconic brand. BMW is not trying hard enough to create and maintain a culture around their heritage models at all.

No disrespect to this BMW bike , but my Kawasaki 900cc LT cruiser , sounds, performs and looks just as good as this bike and is much cheaper brand new, plus has enough power to take care of business on the roads, yeah it doesn't have all of the extra things on it like this bike, but who cares, it's a lot of fun to ride. Low maintenance and lots of people want to buy the Vulcan 900cc crusier LT. It's the perfect bike for the money and guaranteed to resell as used with no problems. Just saying....... 😏

100% with you. There are better performing, sounding, and looking bikes out there. Old adage goes “there’s an ass for every seat” and mine went for this one
