When someone talks about a compact crossover SUV, the usual cars that come to mind are the Honda CR-V or Toyota Rav4 or Mazda CX-5. But the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is not typically a car that pops into mind, at least not immediately. And yet, over the past few years it has outsold rivals such as the CX-5, the Hyundai Tucson, and its Detroit rival, the Ford Escape. So why isn’t it top of mind?
The Chevrolet Equinox used to be available with two engines. It had a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder with around 252 hp (188 kW). But for the 2021 model year, Chevy dropped it and all that’s available now is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder. This engine produces 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque (126 kW & 275 Nm).
With such a small engine, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox AWD is rated for 9.4 L/100km (25 MPG) in a city and 8.0 L/100km (29.4 MPG) on a highway. That is better city fuel economy than an AWD equipped Mazda CX-5 or Hyundai Tucson but about the same highway rating.
The Chevrolet Equinox 2022 starts at just $26,498 CAD ($25,800 USD) for the LS FWD. From there the prices do go up but they’re still lower than similarly equipped competitors. This 2022 Equinox LT AWD is equipped to the tune of $36,583 CAD ($34,300 USD).

Very good review. Less than halfway through I found myself noticing the inflections on the last word of each statement more than what was actually being said.

We bought a 2022 Equinox LT in March. With about 9,000 miles on it, we love it! That's more than we can say about the 2020 Trax that we traded in. And the 2018 Cruze we bought before that. Say what you like (after all, it's alleged to be a free country), but I'll choose a Chevy ANYTHING over anything from Ford which, in my experience, is good for one thing: flashing the Check Engine light, with no clear cut way of clearing it. Fords live up to their slogan: Found On the Road Dead.

What about the Japanese or Korean competitors? Out of curiosity, what happened with the Trax & Cruze?

My Grandfather and my Aunt were both killed in the 2022 version. You would not believe how cheaply it was made. The car was completely destroyed after being hit on the passenger side by someone going at least 80mph. No option, they both had to have closed casket funerals. I am now trying to spread the word. Yes, another human being killed them but that car was a pos. Be careful.

Thanks! Well, this one may not be around for much longer seeing as how GM wants to move to all EV models in the next few years and an Equinox EV has already been teased.

You are absolutely right about this being popular because of its price. It’s a decent SUV. But it sells because it’s a decent SUV at a very low price. And that price has nothing to do with MSRP, which is usually a joke and just a way for the sales guy to knock a few thousand dollars off so you feel you’re getting a deal. Other than 2021 and early 2022, which are unique in auto history, these things were selling well below MSRP. This is happening again. I’m seeing discounts over $3,500 off MSRP. Before the pandemic, I would routinely see discounts of more than $5,000 off MSRP. I expect we’ll be back there before the end of the year.

The problem I see with GM (and maybe Ford & Dodge/Chrysler/Ram) is that they always offer discounts or finance/lease rate reductions every month on their vehicles. So it feels like they're devaluing their product before it even leaves the showrooms. Maybe subconsciously that just makes them feel cheap.

The AWD will subtract a bit of power as well as add a more firm ride. This one has 18" wheels instead of the standard 17" wheels that ride very nice. The cloth seats are very uncomfortable to me. The Premiere and RS have soft leather, and both are very comfortable but do cost more. The RS also adds 19" wheels making an even stiffer ride. I tried all 3 and finally bought the Premiere in White. The Michelins Primacy that come on the Premiere ride fair but much better options are out there. So far I have no issue with the power of this SUV, but mine is FWD. I have no need or desire for AWD. More cost, less mpg, firmer ride and no need in my part of the country. The Bose Stereo sounds excellent but is geared more toward the front of the vehicle.

Thanks for the insight! Appreciate it. Around where I live, pretty much everyone wants AWD. Some manufacturers only offer their models in AWD while in the United States, the same model is available as AWD or FWD/RWD.

Always felt that Chevy just phones this in and does not try too hard. As long as it’s profitable is all that matters. If you can get these below MSRP, which not too sure of these days, then can see why they sell well.

Chevy has a new promotion or carryover promotion every month so there's always a discount or a deduction in finance rates on almost all of their products.

Wow if the Equinox had anything good about it you didn’t say much for around town driving it’s a good CUV the chip thing doesn’t apply anymore the 2025 will definitely give it the upgrades it needs, 24 models in the LS trim are selling for 24k for that price nothing can compete with it
