So, as an engineer, what do you think Elon actually said in this video beside "eh", and "we use gas", "we have more than enough pressure", "we'll vent it anyway". And tell me, how is that new as apposed to when the first "star" ship went into space, and gas pressure was used to move around? Also, what would you consider a star ship? Any ship that exits Earth's atmosphere and from which at some point in time you'd be able to see a star? What field of engineering are you in?

@@stylis666 Ship is the vehicle Starship is/was the system. I'm a mechanical engineer. The RCS using gas isn't new. However the idea to use ullage gas (left over gas not needed for propellant) is a newer idea since all current space vehicles are not a giant tank like Ship.Ship's. Basically the idea is to vent it when it can do useful work vs venting it before landing (want the least amount of fuel possible in tanks to reduce risk of explosion during landing.)

for me an engineering student/part time technical drawer. Hitting an actual industrial job was such an eye opener. Like other CEOs and people giving expert lectures always seem to be so incredibly far off and out of reach while just filled to the brink with confidence. And then you work in those firms and notice everybody is just cooking with water. So "we might be wrong" for me is just honesty. Because that's the thing all of those other f'****** also "might be wrong" they just don't say it.

There are usually a bunch of ways to get something accomplished, the goal is always to find one that works and then iterate to the one that's the most efficient. I did like his thought that a solution may not have to be the best, it just has to be the best at reducing cost per ton compared to another idea.

That's actually a business serious thing, is called Open Innovation and sometimes is good for companies to gather for external ideas, because they know they tend to get biased as they get used with theyr own work and methodology, so getting ideas from external sources helps them improve in products and concepts.

Im just old enough to remember life before the true widespread penetration of the internet in all aspects of life. It's tough to really see how meteoric the paradigm change really is when you live inside the change.

Yes and no. In the early days of spaceflight, a program like that could have been aired on broadcast TV. That was before television programming was aimed at the lowest common denominator. People 60 years were much more knowledgeable about science in general and about aeronautics, in part because it was still new. For the average person, traveling by airplane was a rarity and most had never been off the ground.

My grandparents, who were in their early 50s before Allan Shepard's flight, were, like many Americans, not very educated (3rd grade for my grandfathers). They weren't really into frills like the space program, having been through two WWs, the Great Depression and lower class poverty. Religion, fueled by low education and suspicion, was a huge factor, too, as many thought tech was the harbinger of the apocalypse (my grandfather thought this until he passed in the 80s, during the Shuttle's heyday). Nuclear weapons, you know, so you can hardly blame them! It was my much better educated 30-something parents (engr and dr) who were ignited by science, as were many of us kids (but not all). Yes, programs like this, although often more formally thought out and efficient, and much less technical (it was a broader audience), complete with models and animation, were aired throughout the many hours of launch to splashdown broadcasts. They had to fill all the hurry up and wait with something! Plus, we were hostage, as mission coverage was shown on all 3 networks. Various astronauts, von Braun, and Chris Kraft were very frequent guests (and great communicators, esp Kraft). But without these factors, this much science wouldn't have seen the light of day, and not due to anything but ratings and lcd. Documentaries were rare and the domain of young public television, which didn't have much of an audience, not being lcd. But, as space missions became more routine, and longer, TV had to reduce its coverage. Ratings were terrible, networks were losing money (harder to justify a days long mission compared to the hours long Mercury missions, although they eventually added commercials), and people were mad about their lcd shows getting cancelled. You can't really compare this audience to a nationwide TV audience then, esp only spread among 3 channels, not thousands of YT channels. My parents would have watched some of this content, but most wouldn't, so back to demand, which has never been high. Trust me, in the 50s, like today, science-themed channels could not have competed well with sports, gossip, beauty, and lcd Kardashian channels.

Also, it has to do that when you teach, you actually get new insights and learn. Verbally describing what you are doing to someone else somehow triggers the brain to develop new thoughts.

This would be because NASA did not do test trials. They played it safe on every aspect. All testing was done by the contractors of the individual parts. NASA does not innovate, they bring parts together and contract out design.

If anything he cut in to try and give a better explanation than the engineer. But mostly because I think he noticed that the engineer was trying to dumb things down for the interview too much, and Elon knows that Tim and his audience can handle the nitty gritty tech talk so he just starts going into the physics

I suppose also as the CEO and owner, his job is to make decisions, and to make good decisions he has to know his stuff.

It's not as hard as it sounds. With orbital refueling, you get about 100x the payload to Mars, and with rapid reuse of both stages you get about 100x cheaper launch. Even if each launch needs like 5 refuelings, that's still 100x100/5 = 2000x improvement. In other words, Elon has identified 2 ginormous low hanging fruits that Old Space just wasn't motivated enough to exploit.

How cool that, able to watch launches from your house, fantastic! Been watching launches on TV since Gemini and hope to catch one live soon. Have been to KSC and toured the area but Spacex was just getting their feet wet at that time. Meanwhile, watching from afar.

That’s why he gets to come back. Going back to explaining your basic principles and the design trade off criteria always makes you rethink your solutions. Elon clearly puts value in that conversation as it helps him uncover underlying flawed assumptions that creep into designs.

He mentioned in another interview that several circumstances one hour of his in person time has been worth over 120 million just by a single decision.

It's about recruiting talent, same as the AI day etc. Plus a little lobbying and PR thrown in. So I would say it's a very good investment of his time, reaching the best minds who might want to come work on this.

The fact that talking over design decisions with Tim actually caused him to rethink and redesign Starship could support the case that these interviews might be financially and practically beneficially to SpaceX as well. I can somewhat relate when talking about design decisions, even with people that are not in engineering, like family and friends. You'll verbalize a problem and realize an answer just by telling someone about the problem you're trying to solve. Tim must feel very proud to know he has somewhat of a fingerprint on Starship.

It's also obvious that Elon collaborates with all the other engineers to produce optimal designs. He points in the general direction to go, and everyone has a say in all the details which get debated and analyzed.

He definitely has had some ideas that would be problematic when faced with the engineering challenges of reality (hyperloop, that weird underground transport system, etc), but pretty much everything involving space x is very real and in most cases pretty revolutionary when compared to the rest of the industry.
