The price of the trim level starting at $53k and your as tested model being $76k is what drives me nuts! At $80k you've got a nice play toy for those making six figures but for average hard working Americans dealing with record inflation, stagflation this vehicle means absolutely nothing.

@@mattbrew11 what type of payload are you carrying to get to the max allowable? There should be some impact if hauling an additional ~1500lbs around with you. I'm sure it does pretty well still if the aerodynamic profile isnt disturbed too much (like a trailer might do), but next to no impact seems like it needs more A-B testing to determine better.

@@ALMX5DP with a full pallet of solar panels and the ancillary equipment required to install it z(inverters, racking, wire looms, switch gear and breakers) our lifetime fleet average so far is 2.3 miles/kWh and unladed 2.5. Loads don’t stick up above the cab which is likely crucial. Worth noting these are small battery trucks with max tow and few other options. Crew is typically 3 on both trips. The truck barely squats and the difference in power and range is almost imperceptible. Towing range is halved with a 6x12 box trailer. Aerodynamics is the game with evs
@ALMX5DP

@@mattbrew11 gotcha, still 2.3 vs 2.5 if accurate shows an 8% drop in range (not sure how much of your fleet average is with that fully loaded figure). Definitely not bad as like you said most of the drain is from aerodynamic drag when running at any sensible speeds.

I actually agree with you, even though I am getting one. If I was ranching or hauling trailers a lot, it would be inadequate. But for me, it is what I need, and meets my wish for me to be better for envt. If I was hauling frequently or long, the Hybrid, or a F250 or 350 would be a much more practical vehicle. I agree with the previous commenter. This is the problem these manufacturers are going to have to iron out if they ever want to sell a large amount of these electric vehicles to the masses. Bumping up against 75K for a mid-level trim with a few goodies is ridiculous. I get it, it’s an expensive manufacturing process. But again, they are going to have to figure that out if they ever want to have successful mass sell numbers to the general public.

@@CypressRacing I think selling 150,000 a year of Lightnings is a pretty large amount. Though of course not on parity with ICE Ford trucks. But will probably be the tipping point to getting there. Then with the Silverado and Ram EV trucks in 2024, it won't be long before it is no longer a curious rarity, but just another truck, that fills up with a cable instead of a hose. Though of course takes longer to fill.

Seems like a great truck for someone who basically wants a Tesla with a bed. Obviously not going to work for towing, but for a home Depot runs every once in awhile and commuting back and forth to work, it's awesome. I will never be in the economic bracket that can afford a vehicle like this, but I'm rooting for them to sell as many as they can. Eventually they'll hit the used market and maybe then they'll be viable for regular folk, or at least help bring down the demand for fuel, hopefully dropping the price a little.

@@beexiong2995 yeah, it's a fit in small space is a midsize definitely makes more sense. The good thing about full sizees though is that they're essentially luxury cars. Great truck, great review. You hit a lot of points anyone interested in buying one should know. I think you glossed over a big question, how does it do towing/hauling at highway speeds. If (hopefully when) you get a 2nd chance with the truck going on a harder off road test please consider doing a towing efficiency test as well. Some people are going to hear 300 mile range and assume it will do close to that when towing, I'd be surprised if it even got half that range under a load. And to go with that is the infrastructure for fast charging. And again, I'm not criticizing the review, I enjoyed it and thought it was well done. Just a request in case you get another shot with the truck in the future.

If you tow a long way, you're unfortunately pretty much stuck with a gas or diesel truck if stopping every 100 miles is a problem. My biggest gripe is the pricing. The base Pro model is the cheapest 4x4 crew cab full size truck you can buy, even cheaper than an XL with the 3.3L V6. Fleet customers can get a Pro extended range for $47k, but thas not available to the public. The XLT starts around $53k, but adding the bag battery adds $20k. Why not make the jump more like the fleet Pro and make the long range XLT $60k? The long range XLT is $72k, which is where a Lariat starts and if you want a long range Lariat it's only about a $5k option. $72k XLT vs $77k Lariat, why buy the XLT?

If only we could pick the options we find instead of Ford packaging them for us. Reviewers have seen very little reason to go beyond the Pro version to get plenty of capability. And the $7500 rebate really makes for a great deal. Batteries are just too costly and heavy so far to allow heavy use. Need to have a charging infrastructure build into the interstates so battery sizes can be reduced. Or a Mr. Fusion in the frunk.

I an not familiar with all that tech, but i am curious as what the one pedal drive would do while off road in a hill descent condition. Nice truck though. E-trucks are the futur. The only three problems i see though are range, price and availability. I think we still have a couple of years to get somewhere confortable with those aspects.

People that purchase any electric vehicle expecting to always achieve the rated range are living in a dream world. These rated ranges are during perfect conditions of which the average person will never see in the real world. It is very possible to achieve 300 mile range with the Ford lightning platinum if it's fully charged and driven until completely empty. And although the lightning extended battery can be charged from 15% to 80% in about 41 minutes on a DC fast charger. If empty & charged to 100% it could take more like 2 hours. Having to stop for 2 hours every 300 miles can be very annoying to say the least. You will have to achieve a minimum 2.3 miles/kWh at all times else you'll get less than 300 miles. How often do you drive until your fuel tank is empty? I'd say not very often and certainly not on purpose. Who wants to be stranded, and with fewer charging stations compared to fuel stations it's more probable to happen with EV's.

320 mile range is combination city/highway driving with city getting the best mileage. How many of those miles need to be driven in the city to achieve the 320 mile range. With all highway miles you'd need to achieve an average 2.5 miles/kWh. I'm not sure that can be achieved at 70 mph speeds.

Love the review Ryan, The 2 things I don’t like about the Lightening are; 1), it’s an EV 2), the price I have some friends who live in Ft Worth, TX. Last year during their 2 week brown out, they couldn’t charge their EV from their home. They didn’t have enough juice to get to a recharge station, so they struggled to get to work or the store. As a nation, our electric grid isn’t set up for the demands of everyone using EVs. I suppose we will just keep driving our gas powered vehicles. I’m looking forward to your next review. Have a great day!

@Doc1855
@Doc1855 2 жыл бұрын
@@adofoi30 I agree, but a brown out can happen anywhere at anytime. Diesel fuel is often used to run gasoline pumps should the power goes out. If diesel is available then that is what is used to produce electricity to recharge the EV recharging pumps. Also with the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced when producing lithium batteries to run an EV, is equivalent to driving a gasoline powered vehicle for 90K miles. Most EV batteries have to be replaced around 100-150K miles, so what overall good is it for the environment? Furthermore there are no safe places to discard a lithium battery. The more people who buy EVs everyone’s electric bills will increase. It’s all about supply and demand. I’m not against an EV and would consider buying a Subaru Soltera but not to “save the planet”. The Bible prophecies predicted “Global Warming” over 2K years ago, so there’s nothing we can do to stop what was predicted 2K years ago.

@@FreedomToRoam86 Right now as far as I would go would be a Hybrid...no full electric for me...maybe in a few years when fast chargers are everywhere...instead of building gas stations they should build charging stations, pull through type like truck stops so you can pull in if you have a trailer. Course long towing duties with an electric are out of the question right now, but in a few years could possibly be when the charging stations are there. Charging stations in well travelled frequent sight seeing areas...park your vehicle and charge it while you hit the tourist attractions, grab lunch, etc. Then when you come back your vehicle is charged to go to the next destination.

@@wildbill23c I think that is a very reasonable position. If I was tighter on money, or even if I wasn't but had to tow far or frequently, then I'd stick with my '21 F150 Powerboost (hybrid). But since I have the money, rarely tow, then the full EV makes sense for me. And I am perfectly happy to be an early adopter, and trade it in 4 or 5 years from now for a better EV truck. Far from being "toys for the rich", I think people with money should make choices that help make the world better, even when it is costlier, whether it is developing better ways to farm or better ways to make a truck or car; without people buying them, they won't get better. And while I am contributing that, every once in a while I am going to enjoy flooring it to feel the speed! That is already fun in my Powerboost; Is insane in a Lightning!

Good review overall. I would suggest not to say things like "Tesla has been in government subsidies for years". Tesla had a government loan which they repaid ahead of time. We can say the same about legacy automakers as they did take loans from the government as well. Rivian has an interesting partnership with Amazon which might help them, so far they have been struggling with making enough trucks to satisfy the demand.
@drivingsports
@drivingsports 2 жыл бұрын
Tesla also received subsidies from Texas and China to open the Gigafactories in the past few years. I was making the reference in general terms, which should be accurate. And quite true about the Big 3. One path I could see for Rivian is going commercial-only. With Amazon and other corporate orders taking priority. But nobody really knows at this point.

This extended range package makes no sense. No load, and I drive 320 miles and then have to wait over 40 minutes to charge to 80%, but that won’t give me another 320 miles. Furthermore, if I tow, I have no idea how much range I have, other than if I tow 10000 lbs, range is severely limited. So why spend so much money for an extended range model, if I’m not really getting much use out of that range. Large EVs are just not ideal. Yes you can put more batteries in them, but that jacks up the cost. It seems that the space would work better for a hydrogen fuel cell, or a hydrogen diesel, which can be filled up in a very comparable time to an gas ICE. In fact, hydrogen diesels make the most sense because existing diesel engines can be modified to run on hydrogen and this is a solution now being applied to heavy equipment diesels.
