Dan reviews the all new Fox 34 Step-Cast, designed specifically for downcountry (i.e. aggressive XC) use, after spending some time with it mounted up on his Evil Following. Using technologies introduced last year in the 38, the 34 Step-Cast is stiffer, lighter, and more refined than ever.

@@FanatikBikeCo went from 100mm to 120mm. Got negative degree stem & flipped handlebar down to get the lowest cockpit setup. As a result I ended up with same stack height from previous setup with 100mm fork. I’m used to riding hardtail so I have my weight forward quite a bit. Original 32 felt too soft forcing me to run higher pressure so I don’t bottom out. Messed around with setting quite a bit so it doesn’t feel too harsh on smaller bumps. Then when I got 34 everything changed. Even with just 60mm travel in the rear, everything feels well balanced. I feel much more confident descending yet little to no sacrifice in speed on flats and in long climbs

How about front-rear stiffness - especially during braking? I have Fox 32 and it is as wet noodle - during braking in bends inwards and it blocks stanchions from travelling!

In your opinion which provides a smoother ride for endurance racing: SID Ultimate or this new 34 SC? I have the SID Ultimate and it loves to work in the rough chunky stuff but high speed chatter is pretty teeth rattling. Trying to decide if the new SC fork will do a bit better overall? Thanks for your input.

Well, I haven't done back-to-back testing, and honestly the differences are likely not very pronounced, but I suspect that the 34 SC, with its larger oil volume damper and more adjustability (including LSC adjust) is likely a bit better for the terrain you describe. I use my my bike for full-on trail-riding, and ride most everything I would on my Sentinel on this bike. I friggin love the fork. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik

Thanks for the video.... Evil question, how did you find the changes to the geometry and would you suggest going with a 44 offset or a 51?
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 2 жыл бұрын
The offset doesn't make as much of a difference as it's often made out to. Check this out: www.fanatikbike.com/blogs/engage/who-the-heck-cares-about-fork-offset-and-what-the-heck-is-trail I'd run whichever you can get your hands on more easily. I thought the geo was great! I’m considering swapping the 100mm Sid brain fork on a 2018 s-works epic. Would be nice to tackle more techy stuff on the trail. Would this 34 sc fork be a good option, increasing travel to 120? Or would it change up the geometry too much?
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 2 жыл бұрын
It'll feel a bit different at first, but you'll get used to it and then I suspect it'll be more fun that ever! If you go for it, I'd recommend lowering your stem 2 cm if possible, to offset the change in fork height. That'll help keep it a little more familiar feeling. - Dan at Fanatik

@@FanatikBikeCo thank you! I appreciate the reply! I don’t want to stress the frame too much by doing something it wasn’t designed for. But I feel like the bike will see a lot more trail hours if I’m not afraid to take it through rock gardens and such with a beefier fork. Thanks for the tip on the stem.

@theymademepickaname1248 Жыл бұрын
I realize this is an old thread, but why not just use the 34 sc with 100mm travel? You still get a more capable forx without changing the geometry or stressing the frame. 20mm is less than an inch. Probably would not be noticeable.

It is really narrow, and it definitely does flex forward and back, but torsionally it's astonishingly stiff. That's the direction that matters more, because you don't want your wheel deflecting left and right. I have no intentions of going back to the Pike 130 on my bike. - Dan at Fanatik

I agree. The only reason why I can imagine someone still using the 32 at this point is because of weight. It will be slightly lighter than the 34 but again, at this point, just get a 34. I believe the SC 34 model comes in 100mm travel as well as 120.

I know the regular 34's available with the Grip2 damper, but is it possible to install an aftermarket Grip2 damper in the SC version as well?
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, I meant to address that. That is not a possible upgrade to this fork. That said, it also somewhat defeats the purpose. The GRIP2 damper is quite a bit heavier than the FIT4 damper due to its construction, and you are not able to quickly and easily firm it up for pedaling. The FIT4 is the right choice for this fork, and I've been incredibly pleased with it for all the riding I've done on this bike. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik

Does the fork lockout Lock completely or there Is a sinking when Lock?
@FanatikBikeCo

It is not a complete lock-out, it's their open, medium, and firm options on the FIT4 damper. Better than a full lockout in that it maintains traction better during climbing. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik

So I can't run my 27.5" wheels with this fork?
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Although you technically can, it will have a taller axle to crown than a normal 120mm 27.5" fork, and you will likely be constrained to even smaller width tires since they won't sit directly beneath the fork's arch. That's where clearance is the best, as you can see in the photo in my review: www.fanatikbike.com/blogs/engage/reviewed-2022-fox-34-step-cast - Dan at Fanatik

@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 2 жыл бұрын
@@allanshpeley4284 I don't know from experience, no. This is total speculation, but because the SID Ultimate has significantly more tire clearance (2.3 vs 2.5) I'd bet the SID would be a more likely candidate. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik
@Pesmog
@Pesmog 2 жыл бұрын
What Dan at Fanatik says is correct. I run my 2022 Fox 34 Step-cast with 27.5 rims. The issue is that with 27.5 the widest part of the tyre corresponds with the narrowest point between the stanchions. This means that 2.25, is the widest tyre you can sensibly fit. You might just squeeze in a 2.3 depending upon the tyre and your rim width.Any wider and the gap to the lower leg leg castings would be quite small and become a mud trap and may even rub. The axle to fork arch distance isn't an issue and in fact it is an advantage for me as there is more space to put in a short mudguard for the sloppy conditions that I have to ride in during the winter..
