This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric utility. We decided to take it for a week since we only got to drive it for one day in San Diego. We’ll do another review on it, “Living with the IONIQ 5 for a week.” The entry-level standard range comes with a smaller 58 kWh battery and RWD only. It has 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with 354 km/220 miles of EV range. The RWD Long Range model with the larger 77.4 kWh battery has 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, it offers the most range at 488 km/303 miles. The AWD Long Range model has the most power, 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque and gets 414 km/256 miles of EV range. The IONIQ 5 offers four different driving modes, Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow and provides performance without compromise. It has a smooth and nimble ride with a quiet cabin. It comes with paddle shifters to control the regenerative braking with four levels to choose from. This EV has an eco-friendly interior and a smart living theme with integrated digital tech and flexible spaces to create an expansive and open interior. Sustainable materials are used throughout the cabin like recycled plastic bottles. The IONIQ 5 comes standard with dual 12.3” displays, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a power driver’s seat, a manual passenger seat, black-cloth upholstery and heated front seats. The top trim comes with all the extra features, like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a head-up display, an 8-speaker Bose Sound system, wireless charger, a power passenger seat and a leatherette interior. The IONIQ 5 offers a ground clearance of 6.1”, less than the ID.4 at 6.7” and the Model Y at 6.6” but more than the Mustang Mach-E at 5.7”. The IONIQ 5 RWD SR starts at $44,999 CAD/$39,700 USD, AWD LR $54,999 CAD/$47,150 USD and the top trim is $59,999 CAD/$54,500 USD.

I think it'll age well. The lower trims have smaller wheels and simple lights that throw off the look quite a bit. The pre production model looked great - they changed it before release.

We’ve had the Ioniq 5 SE AWD for three weeks. I think we like it more now than the day we bought it. There are some things like the lack of a rear wiper/seat warmer button and funky door handles that I questioned. In actual use I am not finding those much of an issue. We do have a garage (not heated) which already had a 240V outlet for a level 2 charger. Home charging costs us $3.50 for 256 miles of range. A recent 130 mile round trip in temperatures ranging from 29F to 48F saw an average of 4.3 miles/kWH when driving in ECO mode at 60-65 mph. We initially wanted a PHEV like the RAV4 Prime but couldn’t find anything available. The I5 was unexpectedly available at our local dealer. Living in Colorado we have up to $10k in tax credits available.

We've had an I5 Limited for a month. Love it. NOTE: The short cut to the heated/cooled seats and steering wheel heat is the WARMER button in the climate control panel. One push and your screen pops up. No, not as convenient as buttons but not too bad. My son has an EV6 and yes, it's direct buttons are better.

You can use voice commands I believe for heated seats …not sure 🤔. I know you can control heating and cooling this way. I would prefer buttons. Maybe in a next iteration since many new options will already be available in 2023 : digital rear view mirror, battery preheating for fast charge, etc.

You all remember when phones ditched the buttons? And then iPhone ditched the center button for control and finger print access? Guess what? The phones without buttons are all there is now and despite the complaints, most of us got used to it 🤷🏿‍♂️. Sells more than the previous. A complaint about no button on cars will be obsolete. And yes, the warmer access is as easy as having the button on ev6.

I think the best door handle on both ICE cars and EVs is not really a handle. The VW ID4 has the best idea. It is a hidden button under the area to pull with your fingers. It is easy to use, right or left handed and for everyone in the cold weather areas, it's NOT affected by ice! Perfect.

Excellent video you guys! Such a great honest discussion. I’m in Vancouver too with gas hitting 234.9/litre soon/today? Like many, I’m going down this rabbit hole about EV cars but reality might be PHEV or even PZEV with super clean gas engine. Anyway, I like the look of Hyundai Ioniq 5 - it’s very cyber tron, concept prototype looking! Really attractive imo but yea, might look very dated with certain touches. Someone else said it best: retro futuristic look. When I saw the door handles, I thought too bad.

I know a lot of people make a big deal about the matte grey paint, which is beautiful but I think if I were going to buy the ioniq I would really consider the teal green that you all had. Plus it’s a lot easier to maintain……at the end of the day I’m going to keep the order that I have in for my Tesla model y. But mainly because of cost. I feel like as nice as the ioniq 5 is it’s overpriced by about 5 grand. And while it’s true Tesla is not a luxury car…But it is a high tech car, with leading technology. Plus the y has been around for a couple years now, almost 3. And the ioniq is brand new. And you know what they say about buying a car it’s first year in production…

12:25 - Because of the aerodynamic slope of the rear window, I doubt if a rear wiper would really help much on the Ioniq 5. Our Prius Prime has small, near-vertical window at the bottom, with deeply forward-sloped window above it. The sloped window doesn’t get an appreciable amount of spray from the rear tires. The smaller window at the bottom does. Also the airflow around the car goes right down that sloped window, so I doubt if much water direct falling from the sky would collect on it.

Good solid review. I know you mentioned the price, but think we need to also mention the EV rebates per province. In BC its 8K plus another $350 for charger as well which is why we decided to purchase the top trim. At the end of the day, its the best affordable and family EV vehicle in my opinion. With the rebate, i would much rather have this car than a low to mid end luxury suv. Paying low 50' for a vehicle that can go 0-60 in 4.9 helps justify the pricing as well =) With the global increase in gas, think the price of these makes it less of an issue in my opinion. The rear wiper doesnt bother me, its no different than driving a large sedan and they dont have wipers. With all the technology now it compensates for that. I love your comment about winter driving. 100% agree. AWD helps but at the end of the day its how you drive and your ability to make the right decisions in that weather that makes the most difference. And yes, the stiff wheel in "S" mode is to help control the subtle steering wheel handling during those conditions. Great review.

Reason why sedans don’t have wipers is due to trunk directing airflow and thus mud and spray away from back window. All small hatchback SUVs and vans that don’t have a trunk to speak of have a wiper. Unless Hyundai found a way to address this thru special aero pieces in the back (possible) it will be an issue for those driving in vast majority of Canada in winter months

Thank you for saying it: prices need to come down. I believe this problem stems from the fact that there's too much focus on "SUV-type" vehicles and in order to get people to buy EV they need to be "luxurious." As you said , 70% of new vehicles sold are ICE vehicles, however, as one who just bought a new ICE small cuv, i would have preferred a hybrid, but none was offered. Auto makers insist on offering hybrids in mid size and large sizes only ignoring the smaller cuv/suv market, excluding a large percentage of customers such as myself .

I’m waiting for more details and hands-on testing of the Genesis GV60, especially what it’ll be priced at! I fear though with Genesis positioning itself as a luxury brand that the GV60 (also AWD) will be yet another too-expensive EV, even if comes well equipped vs it’s luxury competitors (taking a page out of Hyundai’s playbook to get market share).

Great review, team! I’m curious how you handled charging for the week you had the car, since I’m guessing you don’t have a Level 2 charger at home. 👍

Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it. You are right, no Level 2 charger at home so we had to get in line at a charging station. Zack went to Petro-Canada to charge this IONIQ 5 but we always find it to be such a pain to be honest with you. As more EV's come in for us to review, we will have to consider installing a Level 2 charger at home.

If you're driving 50 - 100 kilometres per day, level one will be just fine. I was looking at installing a Level 2 charger but I'll wait until I have 3 to 6 months of real world =experience before O make a final decision. $1,200 for a decent Level 2 charger plus installation will buy a lot of time at public charging points. We also have at least two FREE-TO-USE level 2 charge points with 4 kilometres of our home.

Somebody's getting a new garage! That's what I learned in this video. LOL. BTW, we picked up our new Ioniq 5 SE a couple days ago. The most impressive thing so far is its charging speed. It's was super fast at Electrify America and at another fast-charging station we used. It's charging 2 to 3 times faster than our VW ID.4. It's also very quiet to drive.

Correct. Opening up the seat warmer/cooler options is a single click on the physical warmer button. You don’t need to go through screen menus. Alternatively you can use voice commands to turn on/off or change heat level.

I agree that I don't think it's gonna age well, not because it looks futuristic, but because it looks too retro. I like the idea of not going too bubbly in their design (which is what I don't really love about Tesla), but I think if I was really seeking a retro look, I would get an old ICE vehicle and call it a day.

Noticed that you never mentioned warranty on the battery. Is there one and for how long? Like all batteries it’s ok when new but 4 or 5 years of recharging though and they’re not holding the same amount of charge. What’s the cost of a replacement battery cause I’m pretty sure that if you keep the car for ten years you’re going to need a new battery. With out doing that I can just imagine what resale or trade-in value would be.

I quite like both the Ioniq 5 and the EV6. I'm just not sure how I feel about the lower roof and loss of headroom in the Kia, even if I really prefer its interior to the . . . . version. (Okay, I think the morse code H on the Ioniq steering wheel is pretty cool.) I'm also disappointed that you can't get the AWD LR Ultimate in Digital Teal with a black interior. I HATE white/light interiors. They're horrible to live with, even if they look nice in press photos. I don't mind some light accents on the trim and such ... but never a light coloured seat again. (Beige cloth seat and long trips in fresh blue jeans will convert anyone!! That dye never comes out again.) I'm also a firm believer that these BOTH need that rear wiper. I can forgive the weird door handles, even if they're a little weird. But there are solid reasons door handles have become what they are - ice is the main one!
