In the past month or so, Ive spent over 3,000 kilometres apiece testing the 2022 Ford Maverick and 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz extensively in highway, rural, backroads and trail conditions with no shortage of severe winter weather in the process.First, I drove the Maverick a non-hybrid model with 2-litre turbo engine and AWD running a set of Falken Wildpeak tires, themselves a 3PMSF-rated all-terrain tire. Next, I drove the Santa Cruz, complete with its sole 2.5-litre turbo engine offering, AWD, and a set of dedicated Continental winter tires.Here Ill share my key impressions of the experience with you, while focusing on the key differences and similarities between these new-for-2022 compact pickups and how they drive in the snow.Check out the full story at Driving.ca

I love the santa cruz. I am 65 and have driven a lot of vehicles. With the santa cruz you forget your driving a truck. The ride is really nice and smooth, I would buy another one. I didn't really buy it because I wanted a truck. I just bought it because I figured an open bed might be more useful than a trunk for a homeowner. I mean I can put a washer or dryer, refrigerator, hot water tank, some bricks or pretty much anything a homeowner my age would need to haul. Plus, you can't beat the warranty, the only warranty that is as good as Hyundai is KIA. And the Santa Cruz is built in Montgomery Alabama. Right here in America, or what's left of it.

If you put the santa cruz in the snow mode you won't have wheel spin. In the snow mode it starts out in second gear and it only down shifts to second gear. It keeps the wheels from spinning.

11 months after this video went up and some interesting issues have popped up for both vehicles. Maverick has been the subject of a recall for engine failures in the hybrid, creaking/squeaking dash area complaints are common, poor radio performance is common, and easily damaged plastics in the interior. Santa Cruz dual clutch trans in the 2.5T has been subject of a recall, the lock mechanism on the bed cover has a recall, while the non-turbo 2.5L (not available in Canada ?) with conventional auto has been a solid truck with no issues reported to date. Two things not covered in this video worthy of note is the Santa Cruz comes with self leveling rear suspension and both the turbo and non-turbo engines in the Santa Cruz lineup have both port and direct fuel injection to prevent intake carbon buildup while the Maverick does not.

I put 1,000km/week on my Santa Cruz commuting in NW Ontario (I consider Sudbury to be in southern Ontario ... it's so far down there, don't care what Toronto says.) and I have never driven a vehicle that sticks to the road the way it does. It's like a little gecko. We just had one of our snowiest winters ever, so I had no shortage of bad driving conditions to test it on. I would recommend it to anyone for winter driving. If that Maverick handles even close to as well as my experience, I'd say anyone who wants a more "truckish" experience should probably go for it. Personally, one of the things I love most is that once I get in the driver's seat there is no real indication that I'm in a truck. Drives like a car, works like a truck. Best of both worlds. Although I love the way the DCT shifts, the Maverick's traditional torque-converted automatic definitely makes it the better option if you spend more time in slow off-road driving. The dual clutch isn't the greatest option for low-speed crawling by any measure. But it also makes regular automatics feel like CVTs to me now. LOL

I saw nothing in the opinions by this reviewer where he put both vehicles under load when driving them in these conditions and the DCT tranny is not the best one to use in ice and snow. The lower power aspirated engine with a standard 8 speed would have been more suitable IMHO. The fact he never saw the advantage of load leveling shocks under load was also missed in the SC and the fact you have to go higher level trims in the Maverick to get acoustic windshield and solar glass in the Maverick versus standard on the SC also was missed. This review left a lot to be desired as far as testing.

I've got a '22. Will have it two years this Spring, just turned 20k miles. Still loving it. The Cruz actually has factory all-weather rubber floor mats (like Weather Tech) as an accessory. Even has Santa Cruz printed on the mats. Just an FYI . . . For $20, I bought a black rubber mat from Home Depot to protect the bed liner (crazy, right?). It's not a custom fit, but covers most of the bed. It's easy to position, so for instance, if I put a metal gas can in the back, I pull the mat up on the side of the bed to prevent the can from scratching the liner. (I think the liner should be a harder material that doesn't scratch so easily. Maybe they enhanced that for 2024.) Also, if I've got something at the backend of the bed, I can pull the mat forward and drag whatever it is to me. Good luck with your SC. After almost 2 years, I still enjoy the heck out of driving mine - the acceleration, the handling and cornering, all the tech. It's just a blast to drive.

Then you paid too much. I ordered a Maverick Hybrid, by the time you add all the equipment that came on my Santa Cruz SEL AWD to the Maverick as closely as you can you need to move to the Ecoboost because that's the only way you can get an AWD and a tow package that comes to what comes on the SEL. Go to "Build your Maverick" and I come up with as close a match as I could and it came to $33145 for the Maverick versus the $32125 on my Santa Cruz. You really can't let the starting price be used to determine which is higher priced until you add equivalent features
@phineashenshaw

@@oldhickory2064 Read my post again. The Maverick is cheaper than a comparable Santa Cruz. But since the dealer is marking them up 6-8k, that make the Maverick not such a good value. @oldhickory2064
@oldhickory2064 Жыл бұрын
@@phineashenshaw You are wrong...in order to compare the two you need to add a ton of options to the Maverick to get the standard equipment on the SC and I'm not adding dealer markups to either when I bought my SC SEL to a Maverick XLT. Also I was comparing apples to apples not a hybrid against my SEL. You paid too much for your SEL as I got mine for $32.1 out the door including paying Tennessee Taxes on it which are damn high versus most state (close to 10%). I sure hope it was an AWD and had tow package on it. To get a comparable Maverick you need to start with the XLT, add ecoboost to get the AWD, Add Luxury Pkg to get power seat and heated seats, 4k tow package, co pilot 360, locking tailgate, etc....and you can't get acoustic windshield, power tailgate, remote start, keyless entry, solar glass, split rear seats, trunk etc... Dollar for dollar the SC is cheaper...

@@chadsmith28 I know the Maverick has significantly more recalls and has been out a shorter time. I know the Maverick has issues with its braking on the Hybrid as well that is also under investigation and that Ford has been promising to fix for months. Peace of mind with a 10 year warranty and many members of the Maverick Truck Club ( which has 20k members) are buying extended warranties..aand the Hybrid has an 8 year warranty on the batteries but not the wiring harness which seems to be the one place that is being pointed at for the Hybrids problems..and what a lousy bandaid on the fire issues by cutting holes in the under plating and removing parts of the grill to get better air flow instead of addressing the issue with the engine and now the first signs of problems with the ecoboost is happening with some owners. with that said the SC turbo has it's problems with the tranny. I had a Raptor and a Explorer Sport, in less than 40,000 miles with all services complete we went trough 5 turbos on the Explorer which was the wife's grocery getter. After the 5th turbo Ford said they cant figure out the issue an would no longer honor the warranty after exhausting all channels of communication I was left with "take us to court if you can find a lawyer". I traded the Explorer in for a Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy for the wife and i traded the Raptor for a Ram Power Wagon, I will never purchase another Ford, I was actually planning on getting the Raptor Bronco for me and something nice for the wife from Ford until they went to shit with customer care and honoring warranties. Our Hyundai has the extended bumper to bumper 200,000 mile warranty but nothing goes wrong with the damn thing so it doesn't look like we will be testing it out any time soon, couldn't be happier with it! I served in the Army for 21 years active duty as a combat medic, it was always been American for me but Upon my retirement we were driving back home to Oregon from Fort Hood Texas when the 5th turbo went out, they looked at it kept it for 7 days while my wife, 4 kids and I had to find a hotel to stay in with a rental just for them to say they give up and we were on our own. The main reason Hyundai doesn't call it a truck is mainly to shut up all the idiots that would have just argued its not a truck anyway. Why, because the Mav's box is 2" longer? Do you own either one? I doubt it. With some intelligence you'd be amazed what you can make fit in the Santa Cruz, I DO own one. With all the available tie down points and the adjustable tailgate, not to mention the thought that went into the bed itself, I haven't had a Home Depot run yet that made me wish I had anything else.

They really messed up the FRONT BLINKER on the Santa Cruz... They have it looking like an "Arrow" but the arrow is pointing the WRONG DIRECTION.... They should have put it on the other side and pointing the other direction. That is really bad, it can confuse people.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I can tell you I've got a '22 SC that will be 2 years old this Spring, and as recently as a couple of weeks ago, I had a guy in a parking lot ask me what that was, loved the look. I've lost count of how many people have stopped me to check it out. I've had a trucker blow his horn as we were passing each other, a biker rubber neck me as he flew through the intersection while I waited at the light. I've never had any vehicle that solicited that king of reaction, especially 2 years after its been out.

There is no argument that Ford has a lower then average quality ranking and the highest reserve of cash for warranty repairs by a huge margin over all other manufacturers. @@chadsmith28 No they are not but they have their share of problems and Ford has been very slow in addressing them. It took a year to clear out their heads of quality and hired a guy that actually made some changes on their assembly line to try to address their build problems. He gave authority to the workers to stop the line if they identified a quality issue and he installed cameras on the line in critical areas to catch problems on the line. Hopefully this improves some on going quality issues

The Maverick is FUGLY, and Ford should have guessed a better name... "Maverick" an awful under-powered Ford product from the 70's is a sour name. Santa Cruz.. I wish looked more like a truck in front. Too bad the entire marketing group at Hyundai is color blind... the color selection is abysmal... Black, white, gray, muddy blue and muddy green... I hate to think what these people's personal lives are like... Ill get a low miles, used Santa Cruz in a year and have it painted Mazda's BRIGHT RED METALLIC... or a green so bright it can be seen from space... Im cool and loud, and everyone should know it.

@@chadsmith28 Sales numbers don't determine the better truck. One feature goes to the Maverick that drives those numbers the Hybrid engine and the worry about gasoline prices sky rocketing, the urge to go electric by the uninformed public. Check the rolling blackouts in California where the electrical grid can't support the useage and many buyers that have never owned a truck before and are used to seeing something that looks more like every other truck on the road then the SC.
