Just turned 40k on my I-Pace. It still gets a lot of attention, and I’ve found charging times aren’t that much slower than the competition in the real world. As far as the sun shade goes I bought it a year ago, clipped it in and haven’t thought much about it since.

I love the Jaguar I-Pace, but I think it's time for a mid cycle refresh. Really needs some increased efficiency and some better brakes. It has such a huge battery, yet the range is a bit lacking. And god knows it needs an automatic sun shade. Granted, I love the optional spare tire. The only other EV I can think of that even has space for one is the Rivian, Hummer, and the Hyundai Kona

Let’s compare just the front suspension: Ionic 5 - steel plate macpherson iPace - cast hollow aluminium double wishbone + air suspension That’s completely different league.

I am on my second iPace - over 4 years. Superb car. Superb brakes. His comments suggest his car brakes had not bedded in as they get so little use due to most braking being on the motors. He says other cars have moved on, but having looked at the other makes, there is no comparison! The iPace is still leaps ahead of the other makes. I cannot find another EV I would want to swop for......!!

I've had couple of rides in an I-Pace, as a passenger. It's more like a slightly raised hatchback than an SUV or a Crossover. Two would have enough room in the back, but there were three of us in the back and it was not comfortable space wise or ride comfort wise. The dash looked nice though and (for a Jag) felt well built.

We have both ionic 5 and ipace, love both of them, ionic 5 I would describe as serene driving experience and retro cool. But the iPace is a class above, it’s more refined and luxurious whilst most definitely more of a drivers care, it fits Jaguars mission statement of Grace, Space and Pace in a very modern but timeless way.

Your comments about the brakes are misguided. Your test car brakes are unlikely to have bedded in as brakes get very little use. The motor high regen give a fair braking as well. The car brakes very well, and it sees a hazard before I do and has saved me a couple of times. This car is amazing. Consider it a Sports SUV EV.

Spot on. A friend had one but has just sold it, lovely interior and all that but the range deteriorated drastically over time and it has stagnated a bit since the launch. Oh and don't start me on the roof shades, which he had!!! 😂 He's now got a F-Pace SVR instead, and I am more that a tiny bit jealous of that car. What a beast...😁

I'd buy this over almost every other EV for the simple fact there is no iPad stuck in my face on the dash; the one in the Mach E is so big the corner hits my knee. The E-Tron GT has it right on the screen, but the $116K out the door price for the Audi is absurd-----I don't really see a $43K difference between this and a base E-Tron GT. The "22 inch flat monitor on the dash" trend will be like the talking cars of the late 80s; decades from now people will wonder just what GDF'ing drug the designers were on to come up with such a monstrosity.

Interesting review... glad you did the 2022 I-Pace. I agree how much more quickly EVs are changing than ICEVs ever did. I avidly watch EV news and videos online, and I find that anything that's 6-12 months old in terms of KZfaq videos with EVs is already too old to watch (with rare exceptions) -- the field is moving at such a great pace (and this includes vehicles, battery tech, charging infrastructure, etc.). And it gives me great pause in buying an EV, wondering if 2-3 years later the new EVs coming out will be a great deal better (meaning I may not be buying an EV for long-term -- outside of our RAV4 Prime, which is superb). With Tesla dominating the field for years, there wasn't a lot of change so rapidly, but now with everybody joining the EV race, it's a whole different world, and some of the new EV tech outside of Tesla is already better than what Tesla has (such as 800-volt architecture, and many useful features that Teslas don't have -- including real buttons and dials in some EVs -- plus better quality in many non-Teslas than you find in Teslas). So Tesla was king and still holds the sales crown by a long shot, but Tesla won't be the sales leader by end of decade (or shouldn't be, because the quality of their vehicles is inferior to what's coming out from other automakers now, and it's not clear that Musk has the common sense or open-mindedness to improve the many design faults in Teslas). I'd be afraid to buy a Jaguar because I don't think the company will be around much longer (as you say), but I'd far rather have the I-Pace than any Tesla, save maybe for the Model S.

I do like the price of the IONIQ 5 and with a sub-5 sprint to 60, it’s more than adequate at acceleration. Before you mentioned squat we saw it.🫣 The kinematics of this needs to be immediately addressed along with the brakes, to avoid the dive and to make it beyond that bridge too long. This is actually doable with adaptive suspension and would be primarily what set it apart from the rail car stiff “performance” EV’s. Great analysis contained in this video review. 💯

I looked at the ipace when it first came out and it was $80k+. I guess they reduced the price by $10k. I thought it was nice, but not $80k nice. I just got an Ioniq 5 and I think it’s comparable to the ipace and more functional.

Consider that the ipace is on the market almost unchanged since 2018 it was a groundbreaking design. Today its meh. Jaguar lacks the money of developing something new. Landrover is quite successful and paying the Jaguar bills, also the current owner Tata from India. The ipace should have been a smashing success entering the market, now it's simply not competitive anymore, as you also said. I like the interior - similar to Landrover. Agreed would also prefer the Ioniq5 right now (april) in may it will be something else, it's so fast changing like the iPhone - every year there is still a lot of news. Jaguar just lost it - not the EV part, more in their normal car line up which is just not successful enough. Will see what the future brings - great review :)

Yeah that is a good description of the story of the i-Pace. However every EV appeals to a different buyer and has different pluses and minuses. Haven't been able to drive the i pace yet but where are you going to find that beautiful interior as well as driving dynamics in an ev plus adjstable air suspension ? I have tried the EV 6 which is nice but have heard does't handle well and the headroom is really limitted. The Ionic 5 interior looks too economy like for me and is a bit goofy. The Polestar is the closest to luxury but boy is that a cramped cabin and the counsel design kind of ruins it. It does handle really well but is stiff and loud over bumps. I am hoping that the I-Pace though dated checks the important boxes for me when I finally find one which is the main problem here though leasing these EV's might make more sense with how fast things are changing.

I actually don’t think EV tech moves as quickly as you think it does. All EVs still use pretty much the same battery chemistry as this. Some are more efficient and some less. Yes some now have faster charging but that’s not fundamentally new or different tech. I’d still seriously consider this car because it’s way cheaper than a comparably equipped taycan (~25k less), drives better than a big etron and has a luxury car interior unlike the mainstream competition (ioniq, Mach E,etc). For example you can still get real leather on the ipace vs the fake sweaty plastic stuff on most others. The bmw i4 50 is probably the most direct competitor now In price but it’s uglier and doesn’t offer much that this doesn’t in terms of tech, charging speed, or space. Fundamentally it’s still just a matter of j picking what qualities/features are most important to you based on your budget - there’s still no “silver bullet” in my opinion (and yes I include Tesla in that as well)

Jaguar has been silent with EVs. I sooooo want an XF Sportbrake, and if they were to make a PROPER EV, I'd consider it. Mercedes shows they barely care about packaging. EQE is a packaging drama, EQS only better due to liftback and bigger behind. Lucid Air gets a 280 liter frunk, nothing in Mercs and nearly anything in the Jag. Please let Jag be the one that buys the Korean batteries and scales them up for luxury cars. 300 kW charging is there for the taking. There is no shame in using the Lucid Air platform, just work out a fair price. And for goodness sake, make it a real wagon, no super flat rear window nonsense.

I LOVE the exterior. The interior quality is very good and I like the instrument panel and infotainment layout. I REALLY wanted to buy one of these at first until I discovered a few big negatives: 1) Efficiency is bad, where you may not be able to do 180 highway miles reliably (my benchmark for EVs charge legs in a road-trip). 2) The charge rate is MUCH slower than the competition, so when you road trip, it takes a lot longer to charge to make the next leg of a trip. 3) This is one of the biggest issues for me… The drive assistance features for auto highway driving were demonstrated to be VERY unreliable. Specifically, the car just suddenly, without warning, stops lane following and can veer off. After owning a Tesla Model S and seeing other cars also do such a great job of assisted highway driving, I expect the same of this car. If they fix that, I’d still likely buy one. 4) I could never find any of these anywhere to test drive, let alone buy. This has been a general issue with other cars due to supply chain constraints, but it is seemingly much worse for Jaguar’s EV as the brand is already low volume in the U.S. Has manufacturing paused? I now have a BMW i4 M50 on order because I feel it has better tech creature features than my Model S; it’s appropriately luxurious for the price point, has decent range (much better than rated), highway driving assistance works reliably, it looks fantastic in person.

I'm pretty sure these have close to stock Bosch mobility video systems with lane keep assist, they aren't intended to do anything fancy. my understanding is JLR won't be using anything more capable until the they start using Nvidia's DRIVE systems for 2025.

I don't get this insistence on the Ionic 5 being "for your money" just as good. It's all plastic inside and it looks like a big electric VW hatchback? It is not anything near luxe (nor rides like a luxe car), and even Porsche still gets in the same range as this. I-Pace still a winner in my opinion, of course, even in 2022/3..

See, this is what worries me with Jag....they don't have to time or money or expertise to engineer in an electric sliding shade for the huge greenhouse roof. Makes you wonder what other corners have been cut under the skin of this car. I've had many cars with sunroofs and glass roofs......even in rainy old Britain I'd be wary of one without a shade. Especially on an EV where whacking the aircon up drains the battery faster.
