Great video. I have a RG but was given a Lowrider S as a loaner with mid controls while my bike was receiving warranty service. My first thought with the Lowrider S is that I needed forward controls. I’m only 5’9” and coming from the RG I was like “forward controls all the way” for a Softail.

Also a road glide with 475 , Olin front and rear , Saddleman , all black 2020 your thought on keeping both . And what do you like best ,I’m 81 and some time the st is easy to throw around . Love the road glide for longer trips but most of my riding is shorter now days .

That's awesome and thank you for the comments! Sounds like you have excellent taste ;-). In answering your question, I prefer my road glide over the low rider at this point, but I am still working on various updates to the LRST (despite some nay sayers on my choices ;-)) and it is working through an oil leak issue at the dealer. I toss my RGST around pretty easily, but the LRST being a softail with the 117 is a fun bike to ride. If it were me, I would look at what suits you best these days and what is the most comfortable and enjoyable for you. In my opinion, there is no reason not to keep both, unless there is a financial preference involved. But, you can outfit the LRST with the sound system and tour pack to give you the same functions (mostly) of the Road Glide, if it is easier for you to ride and stand up due to the weight difference. All in all, much respect for having some awesome bikes and getting out there and enjoying the experience. Ride Safe!

Great video. I'm not as displeased as you with the mid-controls, but I gotta get forwards. I don't like the handlebars. Too straight and a bit too far of a reach. I already added the Thrashin' 6.5 pullback, and mid bend bars but still too much of a reach and still too straight. I'd like to get bars of the same height and pullback as mini-apes.

Thanks for the comments and support! That is a fair point for sure. I really enjoy the difference, but many other LRST riders that I have spoken to like the mids as well. I think it will really come down to your fit and comfort. If you can find one near you to check out, go for it, would be worth it I think. Additionally, you can sit on a Heritage at the dealer, they are both softails and the Heritage is setup with forward controls and boards. May give you a good reference. Good luck and ride safe!

Shift linkage adjustment? Apparently Im doing something wrong when Im adjusting it. I'm struggling to shift into 1st. I appreciate the video. I followed with ease when installing my forward controls.
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comments, I am glad the video helped you on the install. As for the adjustment part, not sure what you mean by struggling to shift into 1st. Are you saying it is binding as you downshift or possibly issues hitting neutral? To adjust the linkage, depending on what type you have, is basically loosening the linkage nuts and spinning the linkage bar in either direction until your shifter peg is in a comfortable position for your foot. If you are having issues with the adjustment, be sure to verify the connection to the shift arm is on the proper side. If that is good and there are still issues, I would suggest verifying the shifter peg is as close to where you want it before adjusting the linkage to minimize extensive adjustments. Also, make sure the connection joints on both side of the linkage bar are not binding. Hope that helps and ride safe.

Awesome video and beautiful bike dude! I’ve got a Low Rider S and I’m thinking of getting this exact same seat. My only concern is that maybe it’s not very wide and that it pushes you forward. I’m exactly the same height as you and 75kg. Are my concerns unfounded or do you find it pushes you forward and is a bit thin? Thanks
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comments! Much appreciated! As for the seat, I love it, have them on two of my bikes, doesn't really push me forward but does raise me about an inch which is nice. As for the width, I like it since it is a bit thinner but feels like I have more feel to the bike. My suggestion is go to a dealer and sit on a bike with the seat. The step up is a popular seat and many should have them in used bikes or as a test seat. Then you can see how it feels before ordering. Ride safe

What size drive extension and length did you use on the 1/4” bolt behind the primary? Looks like a 1/4” or 3/8” drive. Maybe a 10” extension?? Great vid btw. TIA
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I used a 3/8 drive with about a 10 inch extension to give me leverage and keep me away from everything. Worked pretty well. It will of course depend on your bit set for the torx bits but you can also add a reducer if your stuck with 1/4 to give you the 3/8 leverage. Ride safe.

Thanks for the video! I’m doing this job now, how much side to side play did you have with the shift lever where it mounts to the bracket? I’ve got the oring on the engine side and the instructions called for an oring and nylon spacer on the other side (outside) of the bracket. I’ve got what a I consider excessive play. I’m thinking if I added a nylon spacer on the engine side of the bracket it would probably resolve the slack issue, it’s just that the instructions didn’t call for it.
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks for the question. I didn’t have any play on the shifter once I put the o rings and bolt in as you described. It snugged up just fine. It’s hard to say without seeing it but just be sure you have everything in place. Refer to my video again if it helps. If still an issue, you want need to exchange the part as it may be defective. Hope that helps and keep us posted.

@@justkillnbugz thanks for the response, I just watched your video again and realized that your spacer appears to be like 1/8 to 1/4" thick. I have an aftermarket kit which only had a nylon spacer the thickness of a standard washer. Off to Ace Hardware again. I bought an aftermarket kit because the Harley kits were backordered. Your detailed assembly of the shifter side really helped. I'll probably be back when attempting the brake side

Great video, 2 comments 1) purchasr info on the black cap to cover the metal tab on the back of the seat? 2) I have the same forward controls on my LRST 2023. The brake is too low. There is darn little adjustment in it from what I can tell. It makes cobering the back brake a bit of work. Do you have adjustment suggestions or alternative brake pedal I should consider that sits higher?

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I did a follow up video on this bike with installing full heritage fwd controls and a full Harley brake pedal. Check those out as well. Ride safe.

Not the seat lock. I bought that. I am talking about the black cap that fit over the rear bracket on the seat. Regarding the brake pedal, and forward controls (heritage). What was your motivation for going with the heritage forwards? Did the heritage brake pedal not work with the first forward control you upgrade?
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz 4 ай бұрын
@@davigf1 ah, ok. I am guessing mean because I do not have a chrome seat bracket. My saddleman came with a black bracket. You can purchase a cover on Amazon that includes a different thumbscrew for like 12.00 if I remember right. As for the motivation, the HD fwd controls kit is still at the mid control height. The heritage fwd controls are much lower and provide a more comfortable riding position with a lower knee bend placement. The full boards are an added bonus.

So, you plug the outside hole in the primary, but what about the back hole? Won't dirt get in there?
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. I would agree that if there is a hole from the outside through to the inside of the case to allow for the linkage to connect, that I would expect to see an inside cover as well. The kit did not come with any additional covers, plus that would be a real pain to install for sure. However, I will take a look at the case design from the service manual to see if that section is isolated off from the other areas. If someone else watching already knows, please feel free to comment as well, more to come as I find out. Ride Safe

Think you’re not supposed to remove the linkage, just push it back and the bung holds it steady, this way you don’t have to remove the primary to bung the hole in the inner primary that you presently are left with. I did this on my 2011 street bob and no issues. Watch your primary oil level with that hole 👍

Thanks for the question Johnny. It really depends on the person. As you can see from the riding part at the end, my shin is right up against the scoop in my normal position. I also changed the scoop on my Road Glide ST for the same reason when braking. For me, yes, it bothered me enough to change it, but it may be different for you and others. You will love the bike, hopefully my videos will help to give you ideas and save you $$ by doing things yourself. Ride safe and enjoy!

Would you comment on how easy it is to use the rear brake with the black forwards you changed to? Another KZfaqr commented on his choice to purchase the chrome forwards as opposed to the black ones you have, because of the angle of the rear brake. I'm trying to decide between the two.

Thanks for the question, of course. The black kit brake pedal is oddly small and inset. Especially compared to the chrome set, which why they are different who knows… it can be awkward to use. I weighed out doing the same thing but opted for getting a new black pedal instead of messing with all the powder coating. Additionally, Thrashin is working on a pedal for this bike so I am waiting to see how that goes before I change it out. Hope that helps and ride safe.

Great video...I would like to trade in my RGS for a low rider ST but can't ride the ST at all without forwards. Would you say the location of the controls after the install are similar to where the controls normally sit on a bagger like the RGS? If so, then I can be confident in buying the ST and moving the controls. I literally just left the Harltey dealership 2 days ago and was hesitant because of this. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thx

Great question. When I purchased my Heritage, I test rode a Road King prior to that. The Heritage was far more comfortable with my legs so I changed my mind and got the Heritage for that reason. When I got the LRST, that was one of the main things I wanted to try was to use Heritage fwd controls since I hated the fwd controls and it is still a Softail. Worked great and love it. Feels more roomy than my Road Glides, has a better riding position (for me) and would do it again on any other LRST should I get one. Go for it and enjoy your ride for you.

@justkillnbugz thanks for the response bro! I think I'm gonna do it. I see you mentioned the black forward kit brake pedal sucks. So the next bet would be to get the chrome and powder coat, correct?

@@pbarre79 You bet! I would go with this solution: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nah1qbarmLubqqM.html Far better and a much more comfortasble ride. Then you could do this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLqFdatimcfKdYU.html and be totally dialed in for a touring feel on a softail. Ride Safe!

@justkillnbugz awesome. I actually have the thrashin 9.5 risers and high bend bars on my road glide and love them! I was thinking to do a similar setup on the LRST once I change to tje forward controls. Thx for all the advice. Ride safe!

So I just reached out to a powder coater who told me they can't powder coat the chrome foot controls unless I had the chrome removed FIRST and then brought it to them. Has anyone heard this before? I feel like I've seen a couple of guys on KZfaq who changed to the chrome forwards and simply had them powder coated

I can't believe they have such a pathetic brake pedal with the black kit. I would not expect chrome and black kits to be different parts. Have you found a better brake that will work with the forward controls?

Thanks for the comments. Agreed, I would have thought the same. I have not been able to find a suitable one for the existing black version yet, but some are purchasing the chrome and having them powder coated black. Once I find a solution I like I will post the install to share it out. Ride safe.

Thanks for the comments. I agree, it is a small lever for sure, I will be swapping it out at some point as well. I did not want to mess with buying the chrome version and have to get it powder coated to get the bigger pedal. Why they are different between the two is still a mystery to me though. Obviously putting forward controls on a motorcycle is a personal choice, but the Low Rider ST was conceived with performance in mind. That being said, it'll handle better with mids and the rider will have a better posture. Definitely change out the seat, but if forward controls are a desired riding style; I'd look for a Night Train.

Thanks for the feedback ARO, however, performance is also a measure of the rider not just the bike. And speaking from personal experience and riding time on many peg positions of bikes, my decision was based on works best for me. Rest assured, not having my knees in my chest made a huge difference when I out rode several others on low rider STs (and other models) with mid controls. It is also the reason I have 4 different rides for different occasions. Appreciate the opinion and ride safe.

So I’m a guy with 14” T-bars. Not offered on any bike from factory. I want a Saddlemen Step up or a Le pera tail whip to lock me in better that any seat from factory. And I’m 6’ so I want be more comfortable than I am on the mids that came on my 2020 fxlrs. Less sporty, sure but I still want these changes for my comfort. As do many HD riders so a comment like that makes me question if you ride HD because those are some very modest changes

How ya doin and thanks for you're video. I have a Low rider st also but the El Diablo version. I went a different and budget worthy direction in the way of highway Bar, and it also doubles as a fairing engine saver if it was dropped or knocked over somehow. I'm also 6'4" so I definitely needed some leg extension. Happy Holidays and thanks for you're perspective of ways to get the comfortable riding position you need. How do you compare the ST to the Rocket?
@justkillnbugz
@justkillnbugz Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. As a Rocket rider yourself, you know how they handle, sit, and the power they pack. In comparison to the RGST/LRST, they are different bikes for sure, made for different rides and function. Now, I do tend to get a lil spirited on all my bikes, trained that way and because of the riding the Rocket for sure, lol. It just keeps you feeling spirited. The Rocket is bulky (much better since the redesign in 2020), it feels solid in turns, but man does it punch out when needed. With the endless torque, in every gear, well, it's just awesome. As a softail, the LRST feels less bulky in turns, but surprisingly agile, and rides softer (not much with the stock shocks though). The 117 does not compare to the power of the 2500, but still has some good kick. The power of the Rocket is unmatched in my experience, same with the responsiveness and overall feel. It just wants to run, fast... All in all, I use them for different things/moods but have fun with each in their own right. Both are great bikes and fun to ride for sure. You give me a great idea that maybe I should do a comparison of all my bikes and share my thoughts (for those who might want to know). I appreciate the support, love that you are a Rocket rider as well, and hope you stay safe out there.

@@justkillnbugz I agree the bluetooth is useless and a waste of money. I disagree on the quickshifter though, I too can shift as quick as anyone but I cant shift while maintaining full throttle like the quick shifter can. But I guess I am lazy, I love bopping around town without having to use the clutch except for starting out, upshift or downshift it matters not. But thats why they offer options, everyone does not like the same stuff.
