Lucid is a gorgeous car and one of the advanced tech

This was already a worthwhile listen for the tire discussion. I didn't realize the OEM tires on EV's made such a significant difference to range, though in retrospect, it should have been obvious.

Love Lucid. It has a great backstory. Lucid started as Atieva to supply batteries and powertrains to other companies, including Formula E race cars. I think we will have a golden age of small, custom shops that use common skateboards and different tophats.

Crossclimate 2 has much lower rolling resistance than its predecessor. People normally change tires ahead of winter, so cold weather always affects the efficiency in a bad way. Plus, worn tires have better rolling resistance than the new tread. I’d CC2 is an excellent tire and don’t be bother with the rolling resistance.

Based on CR’s ratings we purchased the Cross Climate 2 model this past year. They are the best street tires I’ve ever purchased. Great in the snow and outside a set of Hoosier Dirt Stockers, they’re the best tires I’ve used in the rain. (No, I don’t work for Michelin.)

I think these guys missed a major point when discussing tire rankings as they related to the CrossClimate2s. Namely, these are tires are a true "All Weather" tire and have the "3 Peak Mountain Snowflake" certification/emblem, which means they are made of a softer compound that will retain better grip when temperatures drop below 45 degrees. It is for that reason there is increased rolling resistance. The CrossClimate2s are interesting in that they ALSO perform quite well in dry weather tests too (unlike for example pure snow tires which often struggle in rain/wet and must be swapped out in the spring and summer). I don't know exactly what kind of weather the questioner drives in, but I think if lived just a bit north of San Francisco California as the questioner does, and wasn't dealing with a lot of snow/ice conditions I'd look for a tire that does better in the kinds of conditions I drive most in. For example, even among these "3 Peak Mountain Snowflake" rated tires, ones like the CrossClimate2s do best in snow/ice, but in rain/slush like I drive in much more frequently, the Vredenstein QuatracPros perform better. And honestly for milder climates a performance oriented all-season tire like a Continental ExtremeContact or Michelin Pilot Sport 4S just might be a better fit for a Tesla Model 3 driven in the Bay Area?

Good review, and very informative. Not that I’ll ever be able to afford one of these, but it’s nice to hear that it’s got the quality it’s actually up to par with the price.

They missed the point in discussing rear seat room in the Lucid. They compared it to a Mercedes S Class by referring to the Lucid as "a car this size". The Lucid is actually the size of an E-Class in exterior dimensions, yet it has a cabin that is a couple of inches longer than an S Class. What diminishes the rear seating comfort in the Lucid is the high floorboard caused by the presence of battery modules under the floorboard. In the Lucid models with the smaller battery pack, the footwells are over 3" deeper, and the rear seating comfort is on a par with a Mercedes S Class or BMW 7 Series -- an astonishing achievement in a car that is one size class lower externally. The Mercedes EQS -- their S-Class-equivalent EV -- has a wheelbase 10" longer than a Lucid, yet has no more interior room front and rear. If these reviewers thought the Air's rear headroom was tight, that of the EQS and the Tesla Model S is even less. Plus Lucid has the largest frunk (front trunk) of any EV sedan, while the EQS frunk is not even accessible, as it's filled with mechanical and electronic gear. I own a 2021 Model S Plaid and a 2022 Lucid Air Dream Performance. The interior room of the Air is far greater than the Plaid -- a car of virtually identical exterior dimensions -- and the Air's rear seating room simply blows the Model S out of the water. (When I set the driver seats to my preferred position in each car, the fore/aft rear legroom in the Air is 9.5" greater than in the Model S. Consequently, we invariably take the Air when picking up friends.) There is not an EV on the market with better space utilization than the Air relative to its exterior dimensions.

On the tire question, Mark's Model 3 went from 204 w-h/mile (4.901 miles/kw-hr) to 240 w-h/mile (4.166 miles/kw-hr). Tesla rates the Model 3 average at between 3.3 miles/kw-hr and 4.17 miles/kw-hr. It seems that Mark's Model 3, even with the new tires, is performing at the very high end of the range ratings. Many ev owners would love to average 4.166 miles/kw-hr. Something does not compute.

Didn't show the rear of the car until almost half way into the video.

I replace my original tires on my hybrid with regular tires. Had no loss in MPG. The original tires were terrible i wet conditions.

Lucid has the best EV tech at this point. Better than Tesla. It gets more miles for each kWh of power than anything else. Plus the car part is great too. Lucid just needs to get price down for the rest of us. I hope the company survives long enough to get there.

Red flag: the consensus complaint is their drive thru ATM experience. In 2023. Regular people don’t use cash anymore. The 3 times you need cash this year maybe just get it while walking down a street.

Headroom in the back of the Model S is also "abysmal". Hard to imagine why it was allowed to go into production that way, and an Instant disqualification for us.

I replaced about 50% worn Continental tires on my 2018 Jeep Cherokee with Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires about 2 months ago. My highway mileage dropped 1-1.5 mpg (about 4%) at 65 mph. I don't think this is excessive considering the improvement in snow, ice and wet characteristics. Some of the drop in mileage may also be due to the drop in ambient temperature.

Lucid is following Tesla’s phased approach, starting with high-end, high-margin cars to fund the R&D of future more affordable vehicles.

I sat in one last week. I am 6’5” tall and found my head hit the roof. It was an absolute show stopper for me! I am shocked they did allow the same interior spec as an S Class. Sad!

These 3 are my favorite. If they would have been cast for Top Gear USA it would have taken off. The Lego man hair is strong but it works haha

Grand touring range models are 950Hp vehicles. Not 800

The Lucid Air Touring model that is shipping now is $100k, not $200k. I've had an Air GT since April. It is a wonderful car for road trips. Yes, CEO Peter Rawlinson did design Tesla's Model S, but spent most of his career as chief engineer of Jaguar followed by the same position at Lotus. The driving dynamics are top shelf. EDIT- had to add that people buying $140k cars don't often visit ATMs, but I've been through pharmacy drive through w/o trouble.

EV’s are such a welcomed game changer. They can take the concept of all-wheel drive even further to INDEPENDENT ALL WHEEL DRIVE because of the possibility of having an electric motor on EACH WHEEL.

About the tires, when I buy new tires for my gas-hybrid Toyota Prius, there are always certain tire models which are specific to hybrids. They are usually branded "eco something". I would think an EV would have certain tires to use as replacements too, instead of just buying any kind of tire that fits.

They will sell better when they have extended wheel base. You usually don’t sit in the front seats unless your driver is not available or if you are a grandparent taking your grandchildren around. But kids have ample room in any back seat. Most people in Paradise Valley /Scottsdale are taking delivery of Teslas and some Rivians. Lucid’s just seem to be such a dated design. All Lucid owners I see are much much older.

So do these heavy EV's burn through tires more quickly? And, does a low rolling resistance tire mean a hard rubber compound?

Consumer Reports needs to concentrate on issues which are more important to the average consumer. Where to save money and how to buy products in this horrible economy. That's where the help is needed.

Lucid is a start-up. Not all start-ups succeed. So let's say I cash in my kid's inheritance (sorry, son), buy a Lucid Air, and the company fails, particularly as so many other established manufacturers enter the EV market. Who services my car?

Looks like a Volkswagen. For that kinda of money, I expect better styling.

Why bother buying

My question is, how reliable are EVs? So far, we need to wait to see if the batteries are going to last 10 years or even 20 years. Because some Tesla cars batteries need to be replace after 5 years, and it cost more than 5000 dollars to replace them. If you make the math, you don't spend that much for oil changes in five years for a gas car. For example, I used to drive a 2000 corolla Toyota for 15 years, spending only normal care like oil changes, brakes, and tires. I sold the car to my brother in law, and the car is still running after 22 years of use.

CR - the Lucid Air is a poor Design. the Floor of the Lucid is full of Batteries , unlike the Completely flat floor of the Model S . the Lucid Air PURE has the REAR seat batteries Removed and is more Comfortable. the Lucid PURE has Comperable range to the 2023 TESLA model S. arround 400+ miles.

CR - FACTS are, Peter Rawlinson was NEVER EVER Chief anything @ TESLA motors. Peter came on , after the Model S prototype was built. Peter , was only VP of the model S prototype , getting it ready for Production. Peter , only worked on the BODY and Chassis Peter did not UNDERSTAND Software or Vehicle computers & ADAS. Peter , UNDERPERFORMED @ Tesla and was FIRED for not Completing the Model S in time for Production. Peter , left Tesla and model S UNFINISHED state. TESLA had to find someone to FINISH the model S , in time for Production. Peter is a SUBSTANDARD Engineer.

Give it 5 years or less this company will be gone-to expensive for the average Joe-even Tesla not affordable-EVs blow monkey balls. Hybrids are the way to go-600 on a full tank of gas-compared to the average 250 electric vehicle range. Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf horrible trade in value. Look for yourself-els biggest hype since Bigfoot.

WTF $140,000?????? Not enjoying CR's hyper focus on EV's.....they are unaffordable to the average consumer PLUS they don't make much practical sense in northern climates. Would like to see CR take a realistic and consumer-supporting stance against EVs until they can make them more affordable and extend the driving ranges further.

Buying an EV right now is just for vanity, why expending almost 100,000 dollars or more for EV when you can buy a very reliable and good car for around 40,000 dollars or less, in other words, you can buy a car for yourself and another one for you wife and not only one. They want you to go "green," but the truth is that EV are not eco-friendly, as many people think, and they are very expensive (made for rich people). Also, right now, the infrastructure for EV is not ready to the majority of the people.
