CR recently took delivery of the 2022 Rivian R1S we purchased for testing at our track. We share our first impressions of this all-electric 3-row SUV, and how it compares to the other major three-row EVs on the market, the Tesla Model X, and well as its pickup truck sibling, the Rivian R1T. We also help a viewer search for a truck that is more fuel efficient than a Toyota Highlander, but also can tow 5,000 lbs - does such a vehicle actually exist??

As an R1T owner for almost a year, I'm confounded by comments of jerky driving and excessive regeneration. Have no issue driving the vehicle smoothly, and neither has anyone I've lent the vehicle to who has driven it for more than a few minutes. Also, the quad motor R1S has a 0-60 of 3.0, not 4 seconds, and it's EPA rated for 321 miles (software updated from the '22 number you quote), and this is in all-purpose mode - have seen much greater range in conserve. The negativity is astounding as a long-timer viewer of your channel.

Yeah, I've had the truck for a month now and I could agree with their opinion for the first 2 minutes I drove the vehicle. Beyond that initial learning curve, it's been smooth as silk. For reference, this is also my first EV, so one pedal driving was not second nature ahead of ownership. Anyway, odd comments from a driving centric forum.

@@JamesDornbos Regen doesn’t turn on the brake lights when used lightly for a longer stop. There is a set point built into the car. If you exceed that level of braking, brake lights come on. You can see this on the screen, the avatar of the car will show when the brake lights are on.

The first EV I had ever driven was an R1T. It took 5 minutes to figure out the regen, and now it is as smooth as anything else. Never heard car guys complain about a vehicle being too fast.

The old guy hates this SUV. Sure, the bluetooth speaker, flashlight, and air compressor are not expensive, but I don't seriously think any of those are the sole reason someone would buy this. It's like if someone was considering a Rolls-Royce with its umbrella in the door, but then said, "Well, I decided I could buy a $10 umbrella at Wal-mart so I bought the Chevy Spark instead." The little features should be praised for paying attention to details, not derided for having cheap alternatives. If you don't feel something from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds, then you should be checked by a neurologist.

Agreed. We are 7 months with our R1S and absolutely love the next day more with it. Listening to a couple of these comments, it is clear that someone moved their cheese. Get with the times. And without regen being compulsory, you’d need brake pads every year. It takes a couple of hours to get used to and you’d wonder how you drove any other way. I haven’t touched the brakes more than 4 times since September,

Jake is just a weird dude...The R1's are simply amazing. Also, mine is 0-60 in 3.0 sec every time with the 22's, none are 4.0 sec. Jake, go back to your VW Bug from 1964. Regen by the way is amazing. I think they hit the nail on the head with the Tesla screen comparison, people just get used to things, even if they seem fiddly at first. Eventually, if screens become the norm for vehicle settings and basic operations, drivers will just slowly get used to knowing which menu has which settings, which category has which item they want, etc. If there is a ton of variation in how things are organized automaker to automaker, that could be an issue. So there should be some standardization in UX design if there isn’t already.

Leave it to CR to try to find a way to make BEV's less efficient, do away with regen, drive in snow mode. Granted, I am a Tesla Model 3 driver but: I disagree with the notion that regen should be adjusted constantly. First you indicate you struggle to use it, because you can't gauge when it's going to stop then you insist on adjusting it constantly, so that you will never be able to gauge how fast it will stop. I have no problem with my non-adjustable regen gauging when it's going to stop. I am sure regular Rivian owners will find the same. Also constantly amazed at CR's total inability to use a driver profile. I never have to adjust my steering wheel and mirrors, because they are part of my driver profile. Even after another user drives my car, I instantly get my perfect settings once I get in the car.

I'm not sure why I'm commenting...CR never responds...but here goes. "Break in period" for an EV? I was surprised by that comment. It's my understanding of ICE vehicles is that the break-in period is so that the pistons and heads and valves and other moving engine bits get nicely seated/worn in together before the engine is placed under real stress. What kind of stuff is happening in an EV break-in period?

@24:17 May be its just me, after new engine design Highlander 2.4T, 3.4TT Sequoia, Tundra, Lexus LX600 is out of my list. Right now. Also for those who are looking for 5000lbs towing in midsize SUV class I would highly recommend that you download the user manual and find out. For example 2 of my friends got Honda Pilot and later found that they are only rated for 3500lbs before dealer installing aftermarket ATF cooler if you want to tow 5000lbs. See 2022 user manual. Vs Highlander 3.5 V6 none needed for 5000lbs. Didn't bothered to check 2.4T gas model as I would never buy it. I don't care even if its Toyota / Lexus, I will stick to features like N/A engines , automatic transmissions (not cvt / dct) , dual fuel injected models (no direct injection only vehicles) , timing chains. AND no EVs until I don't have to think about charging stations.

@carljaekle
@carljaekle Жыл бұрын
Some small amount of vampire drain, is going to occur. You want your vehicle to recognize your phone, or whatever you are using to open it, so something has to be on. In my Tesla, sentry mode will take 5-8% per day. Cabin overheat will take a lot of power on a very hot day in the sun. These features don't exist on other cars and can be turned off. Recently left my Tesla parked for 8 days. At home in a garage, sentry mode off, no need for cabin overheat. Lost 4% in 8 days.

I think that it's the only thing a gas vehicle has that electric vehicles don't, and gas cars will just be weekend fun cars that aren't your daily driver. Why doesn’t CR ever opine or discuss how dangerous these big tall heavy (and fast) EVs are for anyone outside of this vehicle? These cars (and drivers) are killing people with these 0-60 times and 800+ hp. And then the environmental disaster these huge batteries are. Nobody needs a tank this big and fast.
@crispinhands7610
@crispinhands7610 Жыл бұрын
Recommend you do a bit more research on those "environmentally disastrous" batteries. Hint: they're not. In fact, once you do a bit of digging, for every area that's called out as being problematic in the lifecycle of an ev battery, fossil fuels are worse by an order of magnitude. Including forced and child labour (which is a real and valid concern for all lithium phone batteries but almost non-existent in EV batteries at this point). Meanwhile, increased EV uptake is driving the development of much better and cleaner tech (like aluminum ion).
@Sashazur
@Sashazur 7 ай бұрын
@@crispinhands7610Even if batteries aren’t an environmental issue the size and weight of these vehicles is definitely a safety issue. Larger heavier vehicles are harder to control and more dangerous for other smaller vehicles and pedestrians and bicyclists. They also encourage everyone else to also get larger heavier vehicles in self defense, which pushes up average prices, and pushes down average efficiency and safety.
