We've just driven the new Mazda BT-50, and the big news is the smaller engine. The new 1.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine makes some versions of this pick-up more affordable, but does less engine make a lesser ute?

The new upgraded XS now sports 390NM of torque & can tow 3500kg. I drove both the 3L & 1.9L on Tuesday. The 1.9L felt more nimble, handled better & has more than enough power. XS for me :)

don't know why rubber / vinyl is seen as a bad thing. even in expensive cars, you are still walking around outside and get the carpets dirty, it's unavoidable. the carpet doesn't even make sense as you don't feel it with your feet, i assume very few people, if any, take their shoes off when they get in the car.

This is okay really. I don't think it's worth the saving over the 3.0.

Could you do a off road test only on the 1.9 bt50 or dmax 4x4? Interesting to see how it goes against the Gwm cannon 2.0 4x4 ute.

here in Africa we haul 3 tonnes in small 800cc vans. 1.9 is a 7T truck...the 3.0 well its a HGV 10 wheeler.

at what rpm you can feel the power? I mean some brand says tourqe avaiable at 1.6k rpm but in real world you ca only feeling it at 2k rpm.

The 3k saving will cost you more on resale as the market in Aus always go for the bigger eng variant alway has remember circa 70s Kingswood and falcons with the bigger eng (V8) alway sold for a hefty premium over the six

How does 1.9 go off-road? It’s is pretty much the only one we can afford but we won’t be towing with it and worst case it will do some beach driving

It's plenty for off road. Of course you want a decent set of AT tires. to get an idea you can look up the last gen Isuzu d-max 2.5 off road. The new 1.9 (being from Isuzu) is more powerful than the older 2.5 engine.

Now that I remember there's a video of the 1.9 dmax from Thailand that goes off road. Although it's heavily modified tires, suspension.

I'm on the wait list for the 1.9 d'max. As it's also the only one I can afford. But I'm also looking forward to the frugal fuel consumption. It's very economical.
