I had a very similar 2500 to this. Had just under 2k payload and with a sub 7,000# travel trailer and a family of 5, I was over payload by 500#s. That was with trying to be as light weight as possible and leaving more gear at home than I wanted to. Changed to a 1 ton SRW and have payload to spare. Use the CAT scales to verify and drive safe.

I was honestly debating about skipping the RAM 2500 cummins and getting a GM 3/4ton just because of the payload capacity. This kind of answered what I was thinking. I would be more comfortable getting closer to the max payload in a truck that weighs this much as opposed to a 1/2ton which has similar payload. I really want the diesel since it will primarily be a towing/road trip vehicle and the diesel will make a huge difference on those 500+ mile trips with the TT.

I have a 2017 2500 Laramie Mega Cab, it only has a little more than 1800lbs for cargo. I started looking into 5th wheels a couple of months ago. I got a lot of information from your videos. Factoring in having to add around 300lbs of hitch and the pin weight I think I was able to only find 1 5th wheel that would not push me over GVRW with just me in the truck if I even added the dog I would be over. In the mean time I have found another travel trailer model I like for the wife and I, just have to find one in stock and a dealer that doesnt want to take me to the cleaners to buy it.

I have 2020 Ram 2500 with HEMI I tow 39 ft Puma Unleashed toy hauler about 9000 unload we probably close to 1200 fully loaded. My Pin wight only about 2000 IBS and have payload of 3500 on the truck. We do have 6 people in the cab. It towes great no sway and take hills of NH fine.

Good common sense info on the Ram. Thanks for tying in the Excavator and the pup with this video. There should be zirk fittings on the blade"s lift and angle features. Are the track rollers sealed bearings?

Please explain something to me here. I have a 2014 Ram 2500 longbed cummins laramie and the so called payload sticker says 1768 lbs total capacity. I tow a half ton fifth wheel fully loaded at 10000 lbs. Tongue weight around 1700lbs with me and the wife adding another 280 lbs plus 60 lbs for the crosswing hitch so I'm close to 300 lbs over payload. If I had the same truck with the hemi I would be well under payload. Now here is what makes no logical sense to me. I can tow this fifth wheel with my cummins up a long 6% grade at 60-65mph no problem whatsover. Once I top that hill I go down it with my truck brakes, trailer brakes, and that awesome Cummins exhaust brake preventing me from going into the abyss. The towing experience is excellent. If I had the gasser I'd most likely be going 35-40mph up the same hill with my engine screaming at high rpms with me thinking it will blow up anytime. Once I crest the hill I have only the truck brakes and the trailer brakes preventing me from going into the abyss. Now please tell me how that is a safer and better towing experience?

Replace all your gas cans diesel, gas, kerosene with Surecan 5 gallon or 2.5 gallon. Best thing I ever did

There are 2 reasons I picked my 2021 Silverado 2500 gasser: 3590 lb payload and largest standard bed (2 inches longer than Ford, 6 over RAM. I don't have the volume numbers on hand but it was significant and I have filled it several times).

I looked at the GM and the Ford. The ford is 6'9" GM is 6'10". My diesel F250 HCTTP 10,800lbs GVWR, has 2990lbs of payload. My biggest issue with the GM short bed, is the placement of the GN/5th wheel mount. It's aft of axle center line. The advantage with GN/5th wheel is that the pin weight is placed forward of the axle(applies load to the steer axle) NOT BEHIND IT. GM stated this was done this way to deal with the added length of bed(all added is after the axle not ahead like the Ford). Its all part in partial to the end user. I prefer the Ford cabin, there were too many part of a "new truck" that are the exact same as the outgoing model for my liking. I'm not one bit disappointed in my choice. I just did a 220mile trip in very hilly northern Ontario pulling 2 trailers(towing a second utility trailer behind my fifthwheel), with the combined weight of 14.5k trailers, averaging 18.2l/k100km(12.92mpgUS/15.5mpgIMP). Never dropped lower than 9th gear at 60mph(1500rpm)

Since the new HD diesels weight so much, it basically nulls the 2500 series trucks. Best way to go seems to be the Srw 3500 trucks if you get a diesel

Agree. At this point I've seen quite a few even suggest they stop selling the diesel in the 2500 series. Kills they payload so much you may as well get a 1500.

I pulled a 32' 5th for 12 years with an '04 2500 Dodge that had a 9k GVW. The 5th had a 12k GVW and we never had a CGVW over 19K. The rear axle was never over its 6K rating and our trucks weight never exceeded 8800#. So, so much for your argument in my book.

@@johnirwin1837 coach, I said new trucks. Not your 18 year old Cummins. 3rd gens weigh significantly less then the newer trucks. Even 4th gens had a respectable payload. But those premium interiors really cut into that GVWR

Hey there, I’m just curious what you would recommend towing with a 1/2 ton with the same payload as this truck when it comes to a travel trailer? Say that truck as a 5.3 v8, 4x4, crew cab, with a 5.8 bed length

Question for you. I've been looking at the 2015 version of this truck, and would it be better suited for towing a 5th wheel if it had an upgraded Airlift kit? Is the suspension the bottleneck when it comes to cargo capacity?

Tow whats most comfortable to you. the insanely low payload is legal reasons. I follow the tow capacity more for the transmissions drivetrain. the payload capacity i follow the old ways of making sure the overloads arent touching the axle. According to the laws of hauling, my old 78 dually gasser that only weighs a confirmed 3200 pounds has almost 7k worth of payload and almost 20k worth of towing. now i refuse to believe that a modern 2500 diesel cant tow what that old thing can safely. the payload on that old gasser is hard to believe but it is a towing monster. cant stop for nothing but it'll pull it. the '18 Ram will haul something in the vicinity of 2500 lb of hitch weight comfortably. the limit is my gearing with those awful 3.42s. but at the end of the day it is better to have a truck that makes you feel safer about what your hauling rather than white knuckling it.

Payload was one of the most important reasons I got the 7.3 gasser in our F250. With a sticker-limited 10K GVWR it came in at 3033 lb payload. I still get ribbed for not getting the Powerstroke for "towing capacity", but what good is a higher towing capacity when you can not actually tow it?

I’ve spent a number of years trying to eliminate trailer sway from my swr tow vehicles. The fix for the sway was having dual rear wheels. Now with fifth wheels and gooseneck trailers the sway doesn’t happen due to its pivot point, however the tongue weight will usually max out the capacity to where you need a Dooley for added capacity .

Very much dependent on the size of the trailer. My 36' 5th does not exceed any of my axle ratings on my 3500SRW. My Payload is 4342# and it is a diesel with a mid trim level, cc, and 8' bed.

I value your opinion, please help. I have a 08 Ford F250 XLT 6.4L diesel Crew Cab 4X4 short bed. I have a family of 3. I'm 6'-9" and my family is of average height. My wife and daughter likes that middle bunk room. What 5th wheel do you recommend?

That is a very low capacity. That diesel engine eats it up I guess. My Ford F150 with the max tow package in XLT trim and the V8 is 1800 pounds. It would seem a gas engine would be a lot better for payload capacity on any brand for a 3/4 ton. It will be interesting if Ram a n d Cummings team up for a gas turbo engine in the future.

It's about 700-850lb difference for the gas to diesel HD trucks. My 2020 F250 has the HCTTP that adds 800lbs to the GVWR (10,000lbs is standard, I have 10,800) I net a 2990lb payload, and have the larger Dana M275 axle(7350lb GAWR) from the SRW F350(6350lb Ford 10.5 is standard on F250s) I have the 6350lb RGAWR(same as F250s) but a 30k GCWR and the 3" trailer reciever hitch. The tow capacity of this Crew cab shortbed is 22k. Nor GM or Ram have anything close in a 2500.

JD, I owe you an apology and I understand where you are coming from using your very conservative numbers but you also need to realize that everybody is not a rookie at hauling trailers and rvs with weight. I've got 5 trucks leased transporting rvs to dealers and all 5 are 3/4 ton transporting toy haulers mostly because they pay better and you should know that the pin weights on toy haulers are heavier when empty crossing scales across country plus I tow my personal toy hauler with a 2021 carhartt edition 3/4 ton chevy plus I operate 7 class 8 tractor trailers anything gvw over 26000lb is weighed as rolling weight under 26000lb is weighed as still weight or curb weight of tow vehicle plus shipping weight of rv unit basically follow the rules of dot and fmcsa and no where does it mention or refer to cargo or payload capacity just axle weights and gcvw that's it but I do understand why you are so conservative on your weights because I have met people that don't even use common sense when it comes to towing and weights because my 3/4 tons we count curb or tare weight at 10000lb that truck driver their stuff plus tool box tools fuel tank and the extra fuel so legally they can tow a empty shipping weight rv up to 16000lb anything over 16000lb shipping weight I tell the driver to scale to make sure in reality the trucks fully loaded only weigh around 9300lb so that means they can legally tow 16700lb but the trucks are registered and tagged for 32000lbs payload or cargo capacity has no legal standing whatsoever in the commercial world plus how many times does a family going on a trip get pulled over for inspection and weighed at a scale????

Someone’s numbers are off. That must be a long bed. I have a 2500 short bed with a Cummings. I have a load capacity of 4400 lbs. I have a better turning radius of a F450 and with a F450 ONLY having a capacity of 4800 lbs I see no need to jump to a larger truck. Thanks for the videos.

Your 2500 Cummins has a payload of 4400lbs? You GVWR is like 12,000lbs. Every 2500 Ram I have ever looked at has a GVWR of 10,000lbs. Even at the base model the best payload I have seen is just below 3000lbs(2wd) I find it very difficult to believe that a Cummins 2500 is less than 7300lbs. Looking at the 2021 payload selector chart. A 3500 reg cab 2wd Cummins Tradesman has a GVWR of 11500lbs leaves the payload at 4040lbs. Curb weight of 7458lbs(4447lbs on the front axle/3011 lbs on the rear) with GAWR of 5500lbs front and 7000lbs rear. The capacity of the truck is NOT THE COMBINED front and rear GAWRs. Of all of the short bed(always a crew cab) Ram trucks the best Cummins payload I can see on their charts is 2430lbs. Again tradesman 2wd. GVWR is 9900 or 10000lbs(it's not a class 2 truck with anything over 10,001lbs) there are 3500s with near 4000lb payloads(again 2wd tradesman 11500lb GVWR) any Cummins over 4k payload is reg cab and 3500 w/11500lb GVWR or more.

Just the fact that you think this truck "must be a long bed" when you can clearly see it's not, plus the fact that you don't realize that the only way to break 4k lbs Payload on a RAM 2500 is to have a single cab 2wd truck with a gas engine, you obviously aren't speaking out of actual knowledge my friend.

@@KCInferno sorry for throwing a million pounds of info at you. The marketing teams at all three will always show max payload/towing capacity of each model on every truck. You just need to dig through the specs for your truck and be sure what the numbers are. I specifically ordered a 2020 F250 w/HCTTP(10,800lbs GVWR) for the larger Dana M275 axle(F350 diesel axle) for the 7350lb axle/spring rating. Although the door certificate shows 6350lb RGAWR. It has a 3k payload(extra 800lbs GVWR) and a 30k GCWR(because of the axle) it still has the same 6k front GAWR and 6350 rear GAWR of the F250. It doesn't mean I can land it up to 12350lbs or the true breaking point of 13350lbs because it's the same F350 axle rated to 7350lbs. I had a cousin tell me once he could load is 1500 up with 7000lbs of stuff. Laughed and dared him to try it. 1500lbs in and it was standing on the bump stops. Explained it to him and now he understands. He had wrecked a few trucks over the years that the insurance shouldn't have covered because they were overloaded.
