my review and disappointment after looking at buying a 6.4 hemi.....it just can't compete in size, quality and power to the 7.3 Godzilla or the 6.6 chevy gmc gasser.....here's why.
As for the Cummins, yes, it is an excellent engine. the 68RFE which Ive had several. Also had several Aisin transmissions with the diesel. One Aisin bombed at 8k, the truck was new, had to have it replaced. No issues with the 68 RFE which was just not smooth. Cummins does have the best exhaust brake for the light duty truck market. Ram does win on the ride and quiet. The crew cab is just not up to par with other crews and the mega is basically the size of the Ford and GM crews, and the trailering numbers, Ram basically hosed their customers that bought in the past, by lowering their numbers.
I had two, yes two separate Hemis this last year while at work, low mileage to both under 40k miles, blow up, towing light. One left me on the Ike on the holiday weekend. I think Ram's quality went down since the mid model refresh, as I had six rams over the last 12 years of all trims and the current quality is not any better than the other big two.

I haven't regreted it yet. lol My AEV Ram power wagon is 6 years old unlike your new Ford. New Ford engine. You don't have to bash Ram to try and justify your choice for Ford. It's my hard earned money thank you very much. I owned a Ford once. It burnt to the ground in the parking lot of my work which was a chemical plant in 1995. Say what you want about RAM. This is my second one after 12 years of trouble free miles on the first Ram 1500 03 quad 4x4 Hemi with 114,000 miles. I dont like Fords chime, aluminum body, body design, interiors, Fords history with fire and fire recalls. I tow a 10,000lbs toy hauler off road in soft sand and don't think there is a better truck for that job. Enjoy your Ford and quit being a hater.

I do like it....I think after having 15 rams over the past 20 years, I can say the cummins would be my favorite from t Ram. My uncle loves his hemi 6.4. I just like a lot more aspects of my ford and the 7.3. I actually loved both my v10 rams from the late 90s....man those things crushed today's v10 from ford. I feel though that the quality is down from 16 ram mega cab I had built for me. I used to sell rams and chevys and gmc and ford's. I would be absolutely ticked about losing trailer tow rating and payload, as that will hurt on warranty stuff. That was very odd of ram. It definitely fits the bill for a lot of people and as long as they are happy that's the best! Safe travels and fun camping.

Were pulling a 15k gooseneck dump trailer. I have never had any issues. Where I live it is not flat. Honestly my opinion you are talking out your ass man. Yes the 7.3 is more powerful. I think the hemi in these trucks are great. It feels a lot faster than any diesel when you are driving it. The 2021 PW 2500 feels fast. And not fast for a truck. It genuinely is quick and the transmission shifts well, the gearing is great. The problem is if you want a crew cab long bed, and a ram, the only real options is a hemi 2500 or a Cummins 3500. You cannot get a Cummins 2500 as the payload is significantly reduced from the hemi and while the max towing capacity goes up, since the payload is so low you can't even haul more because the rear of the truck will be pushed down too far. You can actually probably can haul more with the hemi 2500 than the Cummins 2500. Therefore if you want a diesel crew cab long bed and a ram, you must purchase a 3500. Now the problem with the 3500 is that it is nowhere near as comfortable to daily as the 2500. You only want to purchase the 3500 if you really need that towing capacity otherwise a 2500 is a much better daily driver. Also, that hemi will feel a lot nicer to daily than any diesel, diesels are slugs when you are not hauling. Therefore I think a crew cab long bed hemi 2500 is a great truck and a perfect daily driver. If you really need the extra towing capacity then get a 3500 Cummins. Edit: another thing I forgot to mention is reliability and repairability. Diesels have gotten way too high tech and complicated for me. That hemi is dead simple and naturally aspirated. Just that is a significant reason for me to consider it over a modern Cummins.

Oh no, you didn't get a bad one. I jjust did a 1700 mile camping trip and averaged right at 8.3 mpg. AND...that was an improvement with new tires over the OEMs which did around 7.8 their last time out. I figured the difference was worth around 30 bucks on the trip. That 392 cubic inches is a thirsty beast. But, without the trailer on the highway, I hit 16 quite often if its flat, no wind and cruise control and I hold my head just right. Simply put the Ram is the oldest truck with the oldest body style and an engine that was designed 10 years ago. Is it better than the GM 6.0 and Ford 6.2, sure. But both GM and Ford upped their game and now it’s fallen behind. ZF 8 speed is awesome though, if I were to get a 6.4 it would have to have the 4.10 gears.

I have a nephew who is a Dodge fan ( Ram .. whatever one wants to call them ) and his last pickup he bought which is a few years ago now is a Ram 2500 crew cab long box and it has the coil suspension and 6.4 hemi. He seems to like it, claims it gets not bad fuel mileage and certainly better then the GM 6.0 gas engine ever got as they were never known to be good on fuel unfortunately. He had two different 1 ton dually diesel Rams before that which he had mechanics tool cabinets on and had at least one trans failure and the newer of the two had an injector tip fail that took out the cylinder, fortunately it was still on warranty as the engine had to be rebuilt. He drives a Ford 3/4 for his work that has the 6.2 gas and he certainly likes his Ram a lot better for ride and the major issue his company Ford has had for high speed steering wobble repeatedly. I like the Ford pickups but that high speed steering wobble potential has cooled my interest in owning one if I end up with that issue. As to going to the Ram dealer and having a pretty dismal experience, indeed a lot of that has to do with people and not a product, oh well ... no commission for that salesman 😆

I have a '19 F250. Had same issue with steering wobble at 14K miles. Took it to Ford and they replaced one of the bars and the steering shock. Then for my own comfort, I put on a dual shock steering stabilizer. Handles dirt roads great, definitely a much better ride.
@charlesb4267
@charlesb4267 Жыл бұрын
@@jeremyvoight7360 With the truck my nephew drives for the company he works for, some of the others are having the same issue he has been having with the similar truck and yes his started doing that at a similar mileage to your truck and it was brought to the dealer and each time they claimed there was nothing wrong and then eventually Ford came out with that new steering shock and for a while that solved the issue ... then it came back again as I suspect that single shock can't cope with the forces as it wore in. But also and this is mind boggling but at just over 60 thousand miles the front wheel bearings are being replaced for the second time, that is very odd and I don't know if the steering wobble has caused this or just the luck of the draw. Something to check on yours though to make sure there is no play in the front wheel bearings. I don't want to sound like I am ragging on Ford, they all have issues and far too complex a systems on trucks that are potential problems.

Disagree with the author. I traded a 2019 F-350 gasser for a 2023 Ram 3500 gasser (4.10 rear end) because of the dreaded Ford Death Wobble, but that's a different story. So far the Ram has outperformed the Ford. I'm currently pulling a Reflection 337RLS 5th wheel. Where the Ford struggled on hills, the Ram cruises. Granted I'm talking one tons and he's talking 3/4, but the engines are the same in the two classes.

A big reason the Ram 2500 has less payload than the F-250 and Silverado 2500 is Ram sticks to a true Class 2 9,999 lb GVWR while Ford and GM both go over that. A lot people want Ram to increase their gvwr on their 2500 series trucks for more payload. The limiting factor might be the coil springs.

Here’s my issue with Ford and Chevy - finding a gasser with the options I want is extremely difficult. Ram is the only one who seems to stock an HD gasser with more than a handful of features. I don’t want a work truck, I want a well optioned gas HD, today. Not months from now because I had to order it. There are 2 F250s with the 7.3 and the features I want within 150 miles. Chevy has better inventory but it’s still difficult to find what I want.
@automotiveinquiries9673
@automotiveinquiries9673 Жыл бұрын
That's understandable for sure. I've had tons of rams, loved em all. I haven't had a gas ram since my v10 2001. Ram currently here has way more inventory and they have packaged the trucks well since 2011, and pricewise they are less than ford and less or equal to chevy. I don't like the active fuel management in the 6.4, but many do. If it has what you want and pulls what you need and the price is right, I'd go for it. With two of my 4 sons still at home (all almost 6 foot plus) I'd have to get a mega cab again and that really hurts the towing numbers of the ram. And I don't see myself buying a diesel again. But my uncle loves his 2500 ram 6.4 it's a 21 and many do.

@@automotiveinquiries9673 agree 100% on active fuel management, it’s on my 1500. It’s completely unnecessary and does nothing for fuel economy. I was comming up on the end of my factory warranty ending and I traded it in yesterday on a new Ram 2500 6.4 8 speed . Runs great compared to that wonky shifting ford 10 speed! No regrets at all. I’ve had two Ram 2500s in the past . A 2014 5.7 and a 2018 6.4 both great plow trucks and made me a ton of money!

@@CountrysideLawnService Yep, it unfortunately is making me very wary of grabbing one because depending on how long it sat before being shipped off it could have issues. My hypothesis is that the trucks that sat have weakened plastics due to sitting in the elements with no maintenance or run time. So any lubricated parts likely dried out and the plastics used on the externals as well as orings probably cracked or weakened significantly. It should be a recall imo. It is a real shame because I have just absolutely loved the idea of getting a 7.3 Godzilla but the new 2023+ trucks imo are too expensive and don't look as good as the 2017-2022 models. Unfortunately I need more than the 6.2 2017-2019 can offer and I don't want a diesel...so i gotta find myself a nice 7.3 with no issues.

I have been towing with Cummins for years until going back to a Hemi. Maybe that’s normal not to downshift into 8th when towing.

When in Tow/Haul mode it really isnt meant to shift into 8th. Its like an overdrive. I usually manually set my gears into 6th and just let it cruise. Also, when not in Tow/Haul, if you manually set the gears to 8th it disables the MDS and allows all 8 cylinders to fire.

I'm actually not anti ram at all, I think.ive owned close to 15 rams in 20 years. I sold my 16 mega dually diesel to the neighbor. But in true form all manufacturers build something and then find a way to make it cheaper. I found tell the difference from my 16 to the 22. It felt cheaper. That being said, ram is a great truck, but it does lack inseveral areas, but thays because the hd ram is basically the same as it was in 10. The 1500 got the new crew style but ram reps when I met with them back when it came out, they said they would run the current hd with only minor body and interior changes as long as they can to save money. Ram is good, not for me at this time, and I think they need to step to the plate like the other big names.

Ram’s popularity came about based on price. For the longest time you could buy a diesel Ram for what you would give for a gas Chevy or Ford. Now Ram is as much or higher than the other two since there’s no real rebates to speak of. With that said I think Ram will start heavily discounting this year. The facts are they have the oldest truck on the market. This overall bodystyle came out in 2010. They are noticeably smaller than the other two like you said. And you left out the 6.4 has cylinder shutdown technology. That in my opinion has no place in any truck but definitely not an HD.

You have a point on pricing and aging on the cab in particular. After buying mine with a sticker MSRP of 63,600, last March, I continued to "build" my 2022 HEMI until they shut down the ordering on the Ram Build site. My same truck went up close to 10,000 bucks between March of 2022 (Built Dec 2021) and November of 2022 MSRP Monroney. I thought I got an OK deal in March of last year. By December of 2022, I got a killer deal...same truck... I had a 2021 1500 where they really improved the inside and when I got the 2500, it was a letdown. Smaller cab than the 1500 by like four inches front to back, no telescoping steering wheel, old style cruise control manual shifting so I felt like I was in a "classic" 1500... Even my 18 Renegade had the improved cruise control. But, overall, it is a very good truck and I'm very happy with it once I after marketed it as I desired... The dogs are the only ones suffering from the space loss... IF RAM had used the 1500 cab as an upgrade in 2019, any issues I had would be solved.

@@Redfour5 nice to hear an owners perspective. Personally I like the styling and I feel like they have enough room as they are. And if you never get in a GM or a Ford (or a 1500 Ram) you would probably think people was crazy for mentioning the room. I considered a 2500 Ram while I was waiting for my 2500 Silverado to come in (ordered October 8, 2021 took delivery December 14, 2021) but ultimately the cylinder shut down technology turned me away. I had just had a lifter failure in a 2021 5.3 Silverado and was waiting on it to get fixed when I ordered my 2500 6.6 gas Silverado. So around the time I ordered my Silverado I had been pricing Ram’s. I couldn’t find any Big Horns local but had a decent offer on a Tradesman. But the cylinder shutdown and coil rear suspension was the main reasons I decided to just wait for my Silverado.

Plus I was told it’s because the engine doesn’t get enough oil at idle, so the first new engine I high idled it to 1200rpms even if I got out for just a couple minutes I’d idle it up. Still blew those lifters and cam out and then I thought, I better look for a new truck while this next new engine is still good. This last one was the shortest. Was seeing metal shavings in the oil at 30,000. Gave my wife the “oh fuck” look, she returned with a Vietnam stare and a week later driving to work… there she blows! I’m awaiting my 2023 F350 and have contemplated going out in the driveway, taking a long drag off a cigarette, throwing it on the front seat, closing the door and walking away from this heap of shit ram. Never again and I’ll do everything I can to advise people against the 6.4. Til the next 6.4 advisory message… good night.
