The 2022 Subaru WRX (Pricing BELOW) has been rehauled with loads of goodies and changes for this new generation. Not only does it get a total exterior makeover, but it also has a whole new engine. Gone is the 2.0L and in is the 2.4L. Although it only makes 3 horsepower more than the previous model, the new WRX has quite a bit to show off for 2022. Thomas and James take this new WRX out for some canyon carving and loose-surface back road hooliganry. What will they think? Does this new WRX provide the same thrills as the previous generation? Watch to find out! SUBSCRIBE!
Huge thanks to XPEL for sending us some TRACWRAP to protect the Subaru. It's pretty amazing stuff. Go check it out! www.xpel.com/products/paint-p...

I noticed that while building one on their website yesterday. It surprised me. The stark contrast between the white paint and the black cladding is so intense that it somehow makes the cladding less noticeable. The cladding almost seems to blend into the darkness of the wheel well, tires, and black wheels. I think that combination with the cherry red mud flaps would look good. @@cybertroy2

Look, I'm almost 65 years old. I had an MG back in the day, a VW Corrado the year they were introduced, a Saab 900 Turbo and a Volvo C30. I loved them all but this WRX is the most fun of any car I've ever driven. If you're like me and can't afford a C8, or Porsche, or BMW (yecch) and don't want the maintenance woes and expense, I can't imagine anything better.

@borek obunga I think the WRX is one of the very rare exceptions where manual is more popular than auto. But whereas if you can drive manual you can also drive auto, the reverse is not true, so it's probably one of those things where the volume of higher trims sold is low enough that they want to consolidate to just auto.

@TheBigNate505
@TheBigNate505 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing it's because they're trying to attract a larger market. By making a WRX with a CVT, adaptable dampers, and "adventure" inspired plastic cladding that the general public seems to like Subaru have created a car that is more attractive to the average car buyer instead of the enthusiast. Being that the enthusiast market is much smaller than the nonenthusiast market it makes some sense from a business perspective. Just a guess.
@afcgeo882

@@jaybosher6144 It makes sense because those specific items are low profit options. Their highest profit margin trim is exactly what’s in this video. Recaro seats, the CVT, adaptive suspension and iSight aren’t cheap to build/purchase.

Im up to my 8th Subaru, I had most of them, turbos, NA, Auto, manual, wagons, Suv's you name it! Here in Canada, the value of a Subaru is there. For me the last great Subaru was the 11-14 Wrx. Those cars had. Soul! Wagon, 2.5L turbo with Subaru Rumble, wide arches, simple interior. To have that same formula again in a large legacy wagon (family men need cool cars also) I would be in heaven!

I had an 08 STI. The hatch. And yep, it was fantastic. I spun a rod bearing because the oil pick up tube cracked ( known issue), and I had it built. Forged internals in a new short block, bigger turbo, e85, elh, etc. I loved it. It could literally do it all with 420 hp at the wheels (on e85). If they made a stock one with a hatch and at least 400hp I’d consider getting one. Unless they screwed up the looks… At least the re-sale value is fantastic, helped me out putting money down on my 17 SS.

Subaru themselves said when they dropped the hatch for the 2015 model year, they didn't really notice a drop in sales much, if at all. That basically solidified its position in the grave. Saves them a lot of money and the customer doesn't care(proven with their wallet, where it counts. Also why manuals are dying cause people say they want them but then nobody buys them)

I get the concern about the manual transmissions, but I think it's only true in time and place. The USDM complained enough that BMW retrofitted a six speed manual to the E60 M5 as an option for instance. Also, in cars like "ze Germans" you get a proper well sorted automatic that is in fact just better all around than an old school manual (you say you want the manual for gearhead points, but you know the auto is what you really want to live with). In the WRX? It's either a proper manual, or that reheated leftover of a CVT that all other manufacturers saw as useless in the face of newer and better autos and dumped it. If Subaru used a proper DCT or ZF automatic instead of that CVT, they'd sell WAY MORE. Not just auto vs manuals, but WRX's in total.
@pondmonserfox
@pondmonserfox 2 жыл бұрын
If this were any other car I would agree with manual transmission comment but according to Subaru themselves, 90% of all the WRXs they sold in the last generation were in fact manuals which makes it even more puzzling why they would only offer the GT trim with the CVT.
@Jay-yg8jj
@Jay-yg8jj 2 жыл бұрын
The only reason sales didn't drop is because the WRX still stands alone on the AWD/Turbo/6MT platform for 26-30k. If someone else pulled their head out of their ass and developed a 275-300HP hatchback with realtime AWD and a standard 6MT, Subaru would see sales drop almost immediately. It's just that there's no other option in that price range. Sure, we all want an AWD Hatch/Turbo/6MT, but you can't get one so a sedan is the next best thing...

@@pondmonserfox they've explained it - they see a market opportunity. When you think about it, it seems smart idea, however, the car looks old, like from the 2005.... Styling won't get any good for reaching the new customers, and I think it's a huge deal these days, people want to be noticed.

In 2019 I was in a Subaru dealership for several hours. I was on the brink of buying a WRX. It was great. I loved the speed, I loved the practicality, I live in Iowa so there's no shortage of snow or gravel roads, I loved the look. but in the end I didn't buy it for one reason and one reason only: rev hang. Here I am having driven a Jeep Patriot for the last 4 years and I like it, but I'm ready to give another WRX a try. Let's hope this is a good one.

The last 2 generations of the wrx were definitely more aggressive looking. Remember when the base 2011 Wrx got the flared fenders vents from the previous 2008-2010 STi, and quad tips? It made a huge difference in looks. Smart move to whoever picked up any last model run STi and even smarter jumping in before Covid hit. Still very interesting to see what they do with the next gen STi.

The next gen STI does look pretty interesting as to what could be done. However, one thing that’s sort of disappointing to me is how Subaru is known to make some of the sexiest concepts, yet dull the production versions of the car down. Look up any one of Subaru’s concepts (namely the WRX Concept from 2013) and it looked nice and solidly proportionate. I’m not saying the production version of the last gen WRX was dulled down or anything, but it could’ve still gotten the more honed and sharp traits of the concept.

@@jazenkow5792 my last car was a WRX CVT 2019. It had a transmission oil pan leak after 20k miles it was stage 1 +.. which I read up was probably the most power to make in a CVT. However, after getting the oil pan patched and additional research I sold it probably 4-5 months later. I picked up a 2019 STI. CVT was a fun car! But it’s built for fuel economy not performance. Dual clutch would’ve been a much better transmission. I’m speaking from Experience when I say avoid the CVT unless you plan on 0 mods besides maybe a exhaust. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I still love my 2020, i think the looks overall went down, drive ability probably increased slightly but with no major updates to the trans/power output so I wouldn't consider the new generation much of an upgrade from the last, but if i didn't have my VA I could still see myself getting the 2022 because it's basicly the VA with the few gripes fixed + some plastic so it looks different. Interior looks more in line with the 2020s decade, however i still prefer the cool customizable top screen you can display your oil temp/boost%/mpg etc, with the touch screen for Maps and spotify and the physical knobs and bottons for the climate controls/buttwarmers. It's the perfect combination. The base model interior for the 2022 is atrocious, compared to the outgoing base model. My conclusion: Still a great car and choice for what we love about subaru, boxer engines and turbos and good suspension and AWD system. The looks will grow on everyone, it seems half of the Subaru community sees someone buy any generation subaru and goes "looks great throw some wheel arches and a lip kit on it and it'll be great!" and as soon as one comes from the factory with it everyone hates it. I'm not saying the backend looks good, the VA was perfect for the amount of plastic back there

Good comment. Also, I have been driving a 2022 WRX for a month and have not felt at all that it does not have a good steering. My car is still in the break-in period, so I am treating it gently, but feels pretty solid so far and sends on a lot of confidence. Definitely, the steering does not feel below anything in this price range (speacially if you value having AWD and a stick). I own a 2014 BMW M135i and the WRX is close to match and even superior in some respects.

I have always wanted a WRX STi. It started when I was younger and I was following a BMW and a STi through a tight turn in my dad's Camry. The BMW went through first, and it was stable through the corner with a tiny bit of oversteer. I was last and I went into the corner as fast those two, but obviously the Camry had huge amounts of understeer and was really unstable at such "high" speeds. But the WRX STi went through there with a lot of composure. It really seemed effortless, and it was making a really nice sound while doing it. Since then, a blue and white WRX STi with a loud exhaust has been one of my dream cars

You do have to mod them to bring out their full potential. If you know what your doing, and do the work yourself, it's not that expensive for the massive increase in performance you'll get. I spent $700 for 06/07 wrx 4 pot fixed calipers and EBC redstuff pads and better brake fluid for my 18' Impreza hatch. Brake peddle is linear now and very sensitive. The car stops on a dime. The sliding calipers are garbage, and it's a shame they put those on a "sports" car like the wrx at that. Lighting wheels, michelin pilot sports, and front + rear strut tower braces make a big difference and keep the car very flat and grippy in corners. You just have to put in some extra money and work.
