#CoupleCarReview
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Toyota RAV4 compact SUV. The Toyota RAV4 gets a few updates for 2022; we’ve got the Hybrid XSE model to review. What’s new? Select trims of the RAV4 get new wheel designs, a new Calvary Blue colour which you see in the pictures, XLE models and above get new headlamps both for style and capability improvement and LED fog lamps are standard on XLE Premium, Limited, Trail/Adventure and TRD Off Road models. Toyota has added a new SE Hybrid trim that slots between the XLE and XSE trims for a more affordable hybrid option at $38,150 CAD/$31,730 USD. It’s similar to the XSE model with a sport-tuned suspension, black accents and black wheels but it has less features compared to the XSE model. The RAV4 Hybrid offers a ground clearance of 8.1”, the same as the new bZ4X but less than the RAV4 gas model which has 8.3” to 8.5” depending on the trim you choose. We love this blue and black colour-combo on our XSE test model with body-coloured door handles, projector LED headlights, vertical LED accent lights and 18” black wheels, standard 17” wheels. The technology package for $4,200 CAD has been added to this trim, which includes, a wireless charger, 11-speaker JBL sound system, 9” touchscreen, driver seat memory and a panoramic view monitor. There are plenty of trims to choose from, you’ll be able to find one that fits your budget. The base trim comes with plenty of standard features including, a 7” touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker audio system, heated front cloth seats and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. One reason to buy a hybrid is for its excellent fuel economy and this RAV4 doesn’t disappoint getting 5.8L/100km, 41 MPG in the city and 6.3L/100km, 38 MPG on the highway. The RAV4 Hybrid starts at $33,350 CAD/$29,075 USD, XLE $36,350 CAD/$30,545 USD, XLE Premium $33,435 USD, SE $38,150 CAD/$31,730 USD, XSE $40,790 CAD/$35,055 USD and Limited $44,650 CAD/$37,575 USD.

I'm happy with my RAV4 Hybrid! What gave me peace of mind was the warranty on the hybrid system. 8-year warranty on hybrid-related components & 10-year warranty on hybrid battery! It was a no brainer. The only 2 thing I wish the Canadian version RAV4 had compared to the American version would be 1) panoramic sunroof & 2) tire pressure monitor system. Other than that I have no complaints about the overall performance😃👌

I did a test drive of RAV4 XLE today and found the engine to be much quieter than my CX-5. The 'sport' mode on the RAV4 was smooth as butter. I have fallen in love with the RAV4 now. The sales person said the 2023 RAV4 models will be getting 8 inches touchscreen and a wireless Android and Apple car play. Ordered a 2023 RAV4 LE Hybrid and was told it 'might' come earlier than the expected 1 year wait time. I hope the 'cablegate' issue on the RAV4 Hybrids gets resolved soon. 🤞

I test drove the 2021 rav4 limited hybrid and the 2022 Lexus NX 350 hybrid premium . I chose the NX 350h because it had 20 more horsepower, was much Quieter and the interior seats and 14 inch infotainment screen with wireless apple car play and refined ride convinced me to spend a little extra to get the NX. I do like the Rav4 exterior design and more cargo space though.

Im lucky to say that 2 Toyota dealers in my area are not charging anything above MSRP, I sold my 2020 which I had for 1.5 years. I had the rav4 2020 limited, and I bought it for 39500 US dollars and sold back to carmax after 1.5 years for 39k. Now I have the rav4 2022 hybrid and I’m super happy. I did try to get the prime plug in but the wait time is approximately 1 year. I was lucky to get this hybrid and only waited 1 month.

A Rav4 with new infotainment system would be a very good upgrade. And an adjustable passenger seat. 😀 Great video! I want to test the Mazda CX-60 first when it comes out in July in Belgium. (The Mazda looks stunning imo). Maybe then we know the upgrades for the Rav4 in 2023... 😉 Europe is going EV crazy. No charging infrastructure but pushing everyone to EV...

Wow. The point about resale value is really understated here. The new 2022 RAV4 Hybrid LE trim is shown at $33,350 and the "Used Car Alternative" shows a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid LE trim for $48,590. That's a $15,000 increase in value after driving it for a year and putting 25,000 kms on it. You'll never get that with a Hyundai or Ford. :)

The new redesigned Sportage will also be available with hybrid and PHEV options as well soon but a shorter EV range on the PHEV one compared to the Prime. Not sure about pure gas range per 100km with the hybrid system but I would assume it's still a little less gas range than the Rav4's hybrid system. Still though can't dismiss how much KIA has improved. At least they've learned their lessons to improve their cars over the years, not just the design, but the quality and durability.

RAV4 has always been a proven formula. But it feels a aged in a face of all the new rivals, especially with the new Tucson and Sportage which are true lookers. I just drove my friend's 2018 Hybrid XLE with premium package, you can just feel how far have competitors come along in just a short few years. Local Toyota dealer already asked whether they want to return the lease early, due to the crazy used market right now. On the other hand, offer him a somewhat attractive lease deals on Corolla Cross even if its not a hybrid.

Great video. What I’ve learned from toyota is they only add “improvements” if they need to. Sure, others have more stylish interiors etc, but the RAV4 still smokes them in overall sales with the pedestrian interior. Until it starts to slip as the “king” in sales, Toyota will hold on to the cash and we’ll continue to get the industrial interior…it sells so why bother?

Dear Motormouth: I'm considering a hybrid Camry/Accord or a hybrid RAV4/CRV AWD. How would you describe the drive, quietness, suspension, and luxury/smoothness level for rear passengers in a Camry/Accord hybrid versus a RAV4/CRV AWD hybrid? Unfortunately I can't test drive them because dealers don't have any in stock.

Did I read that used car alternative right? A 2021 Rav4 LE Hybrid with 26,000 km for $48,590? That's a lot of cake for the LE hybrid considering the pricing for the new 2022 you mention is $33, 350. I get there's a vehicle shortage and massive wait times for new cars, but that's an obscene premium to pay for a used base model...it's also more than the price of the top banana Limited or the XSE with the tech package!

I get 40+ mpg at 70 mph and 45-50 mpg in town. And the engine noise is not noticeable unless I punch the gas pedal really hard. The car is far superior to the Highlander that I rented last year.

No body is asking Toyota to do a Kia/Hyundai kinda refresh every 2-3 years, but that dash really is from like ages ago. They really could have put bit more effort into it. Reliable does not necessarily need to always mean boring. I'm sure Toyota engineers don't like themselves to be classified that way either.
