Gotta disagree with the ultra-reliability about Hybrids being less than the normal variants. The Prius is notorious for being one of, if not, the most reliable vehicle in the world, all of which are hybrids. The E-CVT used in Toyota’s hybrids have been consistently rated for higher reliability than their engine-only counterparts, especially since there are less moving parts.

One little correction. When you were talking about the CVT, you showed a picture (time 1:33) of a belted CVT. Toyota's hybrid CVT's are not belted CVT's. The are e-CVT's using planetary gears sets in conjunction with the electric motors and do not use belts.
@mrofnocnon

Then they are not continuously variable transmissions and are misnamed.
@Intrepid175a
@Intrepid175a 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrofnocnon - there any number of KZfaq videos that describe how the Toyota hybrid transmissions work. By applying engine power on one side and electrical power from the opposite side through planetary gear sets, they can simulate a CVT quite nicely but there are no belts involved. The only thing that prompted my response was Scotty putting up a picture of a belted CVT when he was talking about the transmission and that is not what is in the car.
@mrofnocnon
@mrofnocnon 2 жыл бұрын
@@Intrepid175a Agreed the e-CVT the Toyota uses is undoubtedly the best. All other CVT's still use the belt with all the inherent weaknesses of a drive based on friction.
@thoso1973
@thoso1973 Жыл бұрын
@@Intrepid175a This. Toyota and Honda design and manufacture their own belt-less e-CVTs, which is why they are so well made and reliable. Nissan has a plant that makes traditional belted CVT for Nissan cars and other Asian, American and European car brands. Avoid at all costs.
@Intrepid175a
@Intrepid175a Жыл бұрын
@@thoso1973 - totally agree, although I'm driving a Subaru Outback at the moment. ;-) I've looked at them for a very long time and was bummed when Subaru dropped the manual transmission option in 2015 but it was what it was. I've read about the Subaru CVT's having issues just like pretty much every other belted CVT but I've also read about a bunch of them in more recent times making 200k or more with no problems. It mostly depends on not abusing the car and staying on top of routine maintenance. That's true of all cars including Honda's and Toyota's so I decided to take the chance. The car is not old enough or high enough mileage yet for me to be worrying about it but I'm no hot rodder and I do intend to stay on top of the maintenance so I'll see in time. Fingers are crossed!

Hey Scotty, I have recently taken ownership of a 2022 Rav4 as well here in the UK. The car delivers amazingly low fuel consumption for a car of its size, very smooth ride, quiet most of the time and plenty of space. The funny thing is, here in the UK, they are not popular and people look down on the badge - they opt to go for many of the German brands or Land Rover!!! Yet all these competitors offer almost half the mpg, for a smaller sized car, cost more and less reliable! 😆 Glad to see that at least in the US people value real quality engineering vs. the badge on the car 😌

I think its because here people value feel of the drive and experience more. and my god do German cars drive better than Japanese or Korean! having driven many cars from all the well known brands, there is definitely a big difference between cars from Toyota etc which are good cars, but generally boring to drive, and cars from BMW, Mercedes and VW which each in their own field are difficult to beat in terms of driver experience. for getting from A to B cheaply and reliably, sure! go for Toyota. But if you enjoy driving then go German.

I don’t have to climb into it, it’s great on gas without being a hybrid, it’s spacious but not too big, it leaves more room in my garage than my Camry, it’s zippy when I need it to be, and I’ve completely fallen in love with it! After this video, I will definitely be buying one in the near future! Thank you Scotty!!

Dear Scotty, I have the 2021 non-hybrid LE model and I have to say that even that, with its conventional automatic, is geared towards fuel economy. Acceleration is not one of its strengths, no matter the manual or automatic mode or whether the sport button is pushed. By modern standards it is sluggish and in certain merging situations downright dangerous. This, however, is not to complain or put down the RAV4. It is an efficient car with decent fuel economy. On highways I usually get 36+mpg (again, that's the gasoline only model).

I have a 22 RAV4 Hybrid XLE, I love it! We traded in a 2020 Corolla Hybrid. The Corolla was getting 60 mpg, the RAV is getting 48-53 mpg now in Ohio. (last tanks calculations were 53.5mpg) We know the mpg will fall in the winter, but that is to be expected. Our local dealership charged MSRP as well. I got mine in 3 weeks, it was an allotment. The Prime will more than likely not be available here per Toyota. The midwest isn't going to have them readily available. We are patiently waiting for the BZ4X. You're the best Scotty!

Scotty, maybe you should explain the e-CVT is not a conventional CVT. It uses a Planetary Gear set to control the drive ratios. There are no belts or pulleys like a traditional CVT. It’s bulletproof and very smooth. I’ve had 5 RAV 4’s since 2006 and my 2022 Hybrid has the smoothest powertrain by a mile.

@Scotty, the Hybrid are 4WD because they have a independent electric rear motor. That rear motor is rated at around 54hp if my memory doesn’t fail me. I know those details because my wife owns one since 2019 and it’s been amazing. We traded her Jeep Grand Cherokee for the RAV4 and we’ve been pretty happy with the MPG’s and how reliable is, besides how comfortable it is. Also the handling in that RAV4 feels like a car more than a SUV.

@@cb5110 What gives you an accurate gauge as to what most people are getting? Is that from a real world driving data website? Being rated at 40 city and only getting 33 would require a lead foot and not be typical results. EPA estimates have been more "realistic" since 2008. Economical drivers find it easy to beat EPA estimates, especially in Hybrids. I have an older prius with a crappy battery and still get 57 combined in the summer, and that's with a decent amount of highway, so I'm getting around 60 or slightly above in the city. I would guess that an economic driver can get mid to upper 40s combined and close to 50 city in the Rav4 hybrid

Overall I don't drive enough miles to justify the extra cost of the Rav4 Hybrid, plus I liked the extra clearance and the Subaru awd system, there are times I have to get through a foot of a snow to get to work. Also anyone needing a new car now, dont pay over msrp, there are dealers out there not doing dealer markups and dealer addons. Scotty, EV mode is very useful. I use it all the time. At Drive Up Windows. Stuck in Traffic. My favorite use of EV Mode is when I want to either 'Warm Up' or 'Cool Down' my RAV4. I simply start it up set it in EV Mode then make sure my A/C or my Heater is working. I make sure the Seats are either Venting or Heating. Or have the Wipers De-Icing and the Steering Wheel heating up. EV Mode is great for all those things Oh...and I also while the RAV4 is idling in EV Mode I will turn on the Sat-Radio then 'Pause it'. Why? Because then after it has built up X-amount of pause on it I then can skip commercials or go to the next song if I want. Good Times! PS: As for Mileage I will fill up then get a receipt and then do the Arithmetic. It is more accurate then what the vehicle tells me what my mileage is. I usually get 1 or 2 more MPG by doing it that way. It is simply more accurate.
