I took my 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro to work to find out how good the I-Force Max hybrid is in heavy traffic. We updated the MPGs and determined whether the TRD Pro would make a good daily driver compared to my 2021 Toyota Prius ECO.

You Driving 6000 lbs truck in traffic commuting is amazing thing. A Heavy vehicle makes wear and tear on parts more and cost higher versus cost of $89 each tires on a prius. I drive a 2800lbs Toyota Yaris 1.5L tried and true rated 400k miles or 20 years reliable engine and get 39mpg.

I actually daily drive my 2012 F150 for 9 years and honestly, running costs were average. But I agree, nothing beads daily driving a low maintenance car with great MPG! Toyota does that well 😎

Great video. So I’m trying to understand the hybrid and in what conditions it kicks in? Does it also kick in every time you are under a certain speed (such as 5mph)?
@PattyKuluCakes

I drive a 2016 Prius and the gas engine turns on when it needs to. It’ll turn on during heavy acceleration, going up inclines, at high speeds, when the traction battery gets low, during cold winter weather to warm up the engine, or when you have the heater on. During highway driving, both the gas engine and the electric motor moves the vehicle. The Tundra’s hybrid is designed for performance as for the Prius’ hybrid is designed for higher MPGs. City driving is where the Prius shines, as stop-and-go traffic allows you to utilize more electricity at low speeds while also capturing energy by regenerative braking. Try watching a KZfaq video of Prius Energy Flow screen. That might help you to understand what’s going on under the hood.

Thank you! To answer your question, the I-Force Max turns off the motor early when you’re coming to a stop and you’ll know the hybrid is on because it makes that typical hybrid sound. The electric motor typically turns on at low rpms and low speed. It also helps out during sudden acceleration. But once you have built enough boost the electric motors shuts off. It’s a complex system which is why I would be hesitant modifying this powertrain unless they were parts specifically from Toyota.

Quick question Tristan…by my calculations you have a 24 gallon tank, but on the brochure it says that the TRD PRO should have a 32 gallon tank? Can you confirm the size of your gas tank?
@TristanGrimaldo
@TristanGrimaldo Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, it does have a 32 gallon tank. However, only about 26 gallons is seen as available. The remaining is actually used for your fuel reserve.

Wait, you were in mostly stop and go and got only 17 mpg? have an old 5.7 and I get the same doing 70 on my 60 mile round trip commute. I don't know, I would like the power, but you are not using it in stop and go on the highway. I would have thought the mpg would be more.
@TristanGrimaldo
@TristanGrimaldo Жыл бұрын
Hey Scott. I also thought it would be more as well. Expecting at least in the 19-20mpg range. But I am only accomplishing those numbers on open roads. Averaged around 21-22mpg on my drive from Houston to Austin and back. This was the first time I drove the truck in stop and go traffic and yeah, not much of an improvement from the previous 5.7.

@@TristanGrimaldo When they do the offset test, they run the vehicle into a barrier and only use the weight of the little golf cart size plastic and tin fishbowl of a car. Gas mileage is nothing compared to disability and death from compacts. Batteries can't be good in said accident.
@TristanGrimaldo
@TristanGrimaldo Жыл бұрын
@@philipsoucie3015 I completely agree with you that a larger vehicle (like my Tundra or any truck in general) would be the safer alternative. The Toyota Prius does have fairly good crash ratings. But I am too much of a car guy to drive a truck or larger vehicle always. The idea of not driving a sports/performance car in general depresses me lol. I feel like its a good balance. But when the family is with me, we typically take the Tundra or wife's SUV

Daniel you're starting to activate the mod bug in me lol! I have been seeing a lot 35s on the TRD Pros and they look awesome! I'll just have to see if the aesthetics of a larger tire is worth the decrease in my MPG lol. Definitely a potential option!

@@TristanGrimaldo i read somewhere, Don't quote me on this BUT because of the TRD Pro being a hybrid and with the assistance of that electric component jammed between the engine and trans, there is only about a 1mpg decrease on the hybrid models with 35s. On non hybrid there is a substantial decrease 👀🔥
