The lack of the V8 as an option is why the new Tundra is out of consideration for me. Had Toyota put a 10 speed transmission to the existing 5.7 engine, that would have been the right move to most of the Tundra’s customer base.

if i keep my 21 tundra around 1800rpm the computer shows im getting 20 and up. but get over 60 and thats when it gets bad mpg. id love a 10speed in my 21

Same situation here, I'm keeping the 5.7 and upgrading it with new suspension, bumpers, winch, 5.29s, rear locker, 35 tires, etc. It will be great.

Yeah, I have an 03 Tundra and an 07 Tundra - both SR5 4x4’s that I purchased new. I love them both but I have to give my 03 the edge because it’s more fun to drive off road. The 03 is a perfectly sized fun truck. Also, I hate the 22 Tundra - it a swing and a miss in my book. Spent some time with one recently, what a disappointment. Not for me, I’ll keep the trucks I already have.

The new tundra is very nice but I’m in Texas and we drive v8s lol I’ll rather have the older truck 4wd 5.7 with bigger fuel tank is perfect for me.

As a person who owns turbo things for my fun cars, I can say I will never own a turbo anything for a daily driver. Twin turbo v6 will never last anywhere near as long as a good ol Toyota v8 na

I generally feel the same way. But something I haven’t considered until recently is that these cars have millions of dollars spent to matching the turbos to the power train, and they aren’t pushing crazy boost. This will be much more reliable that the dude at your local performance shop slapping on a turbo for a few grand

Just an FYI Dave you didn’t lose the solid axle in the back of the new Tundra all you did was change from leaf springs to coil springs. You still have a solid rear axle out back.

The dude clearly misspoke. He was talking about suspension components before and after that statement. Talking to a camera and talking out loud are very different things. I misspeak all the time on camera and have to fix it in editing. Maybe they just didn't catch it.

Recently I found a 30K mile doublecab 5.7 V8 Tundra. Look,feel and drive like new. I test drove the 22 DC Tundra as well. The back seats are basically unusable on the new DC compared to mine. Payload was 60lbs more on the 22 and towing was 900lbs more but bed looked more shallow on the 22'. For someone that will be using it for work often. Wants to avoid downtime for repairs and sometimes carry 4-5 adults I'd say the V8 DC is better choice than the 22'. Last the price difference was $20K. I'll stick with a bit less fuel efficient truck and less electronics instead of paying $20K more for basically 900lbs difference towing.

I agree with you Dave, i own a 2011 Superduty with a 6.7 that i bought new, it's been such a solide reliable truck & man seeing the price tag of the new one compare to what i paid for mine, i mean, i can't justify the cost of a new one. It's not twice the truck & it still does everything i need it to do so why replaced a solide working machine. Sure they do have all those new fancy tech but at the end of the day it still does what need to be done.

What are the other benefits that you see older 2020 Tundra has over the new Tundra?! The reason I am asking is that everybody is praising the newer model while saying tins of crap about the previous gen.

Class video, was actually having this conversation while watching your video. You raise such valid points instead of jumping on the hype bandwagon. Save the money get 80-90% but use the vehicle as intended. Plus that fuel saving, once you sell, buy, insure, register isn't really worth it. Keep up the awesome content!

5:23 it stil has a solid rear axle, they just switched to coil springs instead of leaf springs

Yes. I was just going to comment the same. It's not a fully independent rear suspension. It still has a live axle, but with multi-link coil spring suspension.

Man, DP's almost 2min one take, silky smooth intros and outros were so good. Respect for that! And as a previous 2002 Tundra owner with the 4.7L, it was the best run around, no problem truck you could buy. The downside was it was a tweener truck - not quite full half ton and just a bit heavier duty than a Tacoma. It definitely worked hard towing a car but daily driving around town and running normal errands (average DIY repair, home owner type loads) it was phenomenal. Let's just ignore the inherent ball joint and frame rust issues that generation suffered. I can only imagine how the 5.7L and upgrades to the 2008 would have filled all those gaps...and then how the 2022 must have improved upon those. Would have loved to see the underside and that multi-link of the new truck on the lift. Also was curious to see a back seat room comparison to see how car seats fit back there (and if the kids would be kicking the back of the seat).

My 08 has 780.000 miles only issue was bad o2 sensor and starter . I change oil every 8000 miles , and do the dof oil every 80k. Tow a 7000 lbs travel trailer , every month. 8-9 mpg 65mph

We are already seeing with the 2019-2021 Tundra's what we saw with the 2001-2004 Tacoma's when the new Tacoma came out in 2005. Nobody really likes the new body style and everyone that knows anything about trucks is going for the last refresh of the previous generation. I can see in another 2-3 years as the launch of the new Tundra gets farther in the rearview mirror, people are not going to want that new Tundra they are going to want the last couple of years of the 2.5 gen Tundra. So, I had a 2000 Tacoma V6 access cab TRD Off Road 5-speed manual that I bought brand new at $22,500 in 2000. I sold it in 2019 for $15,000 flat. That truck essentially cost me $394 a year to own. This is what Tundra owners are going to experience for years to come of the 2.5 gen. You watch!

Went from a 17 ram 5.7 to a 21 ram with a 5.7 I wanted a Warlock but I the numbers didn't work out but for 130 dollars more a month its so much better I love the touch screen and back up camara and it drives and tows like a dream. Had to rescue my dad and his challenger from Indiana after he hit a deer drove it a thousand miles there and back towing his car it still avaraged 15 mpg going 75-80 mph. Several times I had to slow down because I was hitting 80 while towing and didn't even realize it.

I am watching your Tundra videos because I just bought a 2011 with 345 000 km on it and it has NOTHING wrong with it. No oil consumption nothing. Super happy with the crazy deal I got and watching your videos to learn more on it. I plan on keeping it for at least another 100k - 200k km.

My ‘21 Tundra V8 gets under 14L/100km at 100kmh. And while towing a 2300 lbs trailer with a 3200 lbs car it gets under 20L/100km at 100kmh so I’m quiet happy with it

Awesome video! If I was today in the market for a new truck, I would always buy the 2nd gen Tundra (new or used) over the new one. Here in U.S., the price difference between a new 22 and new 21 Tundra is on average $8 to $11k, same trim and similar packages. In addition, I do not think that v6TT will have a better MPG than the 2nd gen Tundra knowing that my wife has a lead foot.

Love the content, guys! I've got a 2021 Tundra (SR5 w/TRD off-road package) because of its reputation for reliability and the sound of the 5.7L V8 -- my first V8 ever, my last car was a 2007 Honda Fit haha. Purchased it last September and I love the damn thing so much, even if it's a pig on gas ($6.25/gallon in SoCal right now). The dealership my broker and I worked with to buy my truck just offered me 5k more than I purchased it for -- even offered a straight trade for a 2022 In similar trim if I was willing to wait until spring/summer for delivery. I appreciated the offer but I think I'll stick with the v8.

@@watchmanexpert over the course of 12k miles my average tank is 13.5mpg - 60/40 city/hwy driving on California gas. Best tank was 18mpg of pure highway driving going from LA county to Big Bear Lake with a bed full of luggage, snow boards and gear, alcohol (lots), and a weekend’s worth of groceries. If you’re planning on keeping the Tundra and driving it until the wheels fall off (from rust) then it’s worth the trade off for reliability. If you decide to trade or sell it in

!5mpg average. Ill keep my 2008. I get 14 with a lift and larger wheels. Like you guys the tundra is reliable. I don't need anymore power. I would like to see 20mpg average with all the newer technology.

From a practical standpoint the most important point you eluded to about upgrading is waiting for them to work out all the bugs on the new platform before buying. Having said that, newer is always tempting, especially for the improved comfort and technology features.

My 410,000 mile 1996 Chevy k1500 gets average 14.7 mpg. Good solid mix of freeway and around town, loaded and unloaded bed. No engine problems, but trans has gone out twice. The point is, how is it that gas mileage doesn’t get any better. Freakin ridiculous.

Give me few more years as when the truck has been out for a couple years we will see if i would buy it, but as of right now i would rather still have the the older V8 Tundra. My family has a 2009 Tundra 4.7L V8, it has been a great truck. The first few years has been reliable and all we did is maintenance and fluid changes. As it got older with higher mileage we did have to replace the struts and other common issues like the air injection problem. I would still keep the old Tundra and not spend 60k for the new one for now.

I love the 2022 model year upgrades, mostly. But you summed things up right. Is it that much better? Sure in a bunch of ways, but not enough ... yet. That said, I just received the title (in the states that means owing no one after financing) for my 2014 Tundra SR5 that I upgraded to be closer to a TRD based on my taste. Gas/fuel/petrol prices be damned, I'm keeping my 5.7 liter around for a while because it's a good truck. Thanks for the comparison.

Is it just me or does the last gen Tundra design look a bit better? This is fully subjective and your opinion may differ but I think the huge front grill extending down trough the front bumper is a bit overkill. And the small recessed headlights are weird. Id like it more if it looked like a Tacoma or 4Runner.

This new generation Tundra is so butt-ugly, i wont be buying one. Ive owned two tacomas, and two tundras, and hope to keep my current one as long as i can, but the new style is a turnoff. May go to Big 3 in the future.

My suggestion would be to wait 3 years to purchase a used 2022 Tundra that same truck you drove will be around $50,000 in 3 years much more affordable. But your right $60,000 is a lot of money to spend on a new vehicle. I'm driving a 2016 Tacoma with only 30,749 miles and would love to purchase a used 2022 Tundra in 3 years

If they have put the 10 speed gearbox with the V8. I think it would be a better truck. I think Toyota is gonna have problems with the turbos/wastegates due to their locations and you can't beat the reliability of that V8. Toyota's reliability has gone down a bit... I'm not trying to bash Toyota's. I'm driving a 2017 Tundra and a mk3 supra and I love it!

I have an 08 SR5 that I use to tow my camper and it tows great has been super reliable. I changed out the mirrors with an OEM style mirror and put the brake controller in the dash. Other than that it is all stock and I own it. Maybe after 4 or 5 years and the new engine has had some time to prove it self.

Isn’t comparing a 14 year old Tundra to a brand new redesigned Tundra somewhat nonsensical? I LOVED my 2007 Tundra CrewMax for the 13 years I owned it and had no plans of replacing it. Unfortunately, a large oak tree fell on it (totaled) so I was forced to replace it back in June 2020. Bought a brand new Tundra Platinum 4x4 and love it equally as much as I did my 2007. I do not like the new 2022 Tundra and I certainly don’t like that they killed off the V8. If my 2020 had a 10 speed tranny, I know my fuel mileage would be easily improved. Plus, I still have the wonderful V8 rumble coming from my TRD exhaust.

I changed my struts to the bilstien yellows recently on my 2007 tundra crewmax and it that fixed the body roll under breaking thing.

Here's my thoughts, if it still suits your needs stick with what you got, if you need it to be more powerful or something upgrade to a newer model that is used with decent mileage so that way it lasts you for as long as you need it.

That would be a waste. That trans isn’t even compatible with the 5.7 at all. This is a truck. Not a Mustang or Camaro.

I always like to see big things that shouldn't go fast...go really fast. If you guys made a go-fast version of either version of the tundra, that would be cool!. I'm not sure anyone else has really disclosed any 2022 projects, but turbo setups on the 07-21 version are uncommon and could be a neat future project for if/when the upgrade does happen

Toyota actually had factory installed superchargers on the 2nd generation tundras until 2015. They made close to 500 h.p. nobody knows about them because they are so rare !

I really love the looks of the new one while I'm also huge fan of the old Tundra... but for me, I think I might prefer buy used old Tundra, supercharged it, updated the suspension components, and then add extra sound insulation in the cabin... I think it would make similar deal. If anything lacking is the infotainment system, and fuel consumption... and yes, I like trucks but yet I care about MPGs.

Would like to see you do update/upgrades to the 08 tundra. Maybe some Morimoto led headlights a upgraded head unit maybe some rear airbags to help with towing and some body mounts to see if that helps with isolating noise. A couple thousand dollars to bring its Inadequacies up to date compared to the new truck.

I have a 2007 SR5 4.7L with 132K miles, the 4.7 had the least amount of issues but ive also done the sais bypass fix. I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for a TTv6 tundra even if they paid me.

My 13 Tundra pushing 250k miles is still a beast. Regardless of fuel savings(who buys a full size truck and worries about mpg?) That 22 is fugly. I would like a 10 spd trans tho.

I'm such a Luddite now. I literally sold my 2017 Silverado due to reliability issues. Now I daily drive a 2003 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins in it. It's crazy how utilitarian and reliable these old trucks are when compared to these new plastic trucks where if you sneeze wrong a CEL comes on.

As nice as the new models are I would not buy one. I would rather spend much less improving the 08, bringing it closer to performing like the 2022. So maybe a series about upgrading the old girl is in order. 😃

I’ll stick with the 5.7L V8 in my 2015 TRD PRO, and before that I had a 4.7L V8 2007 SR5 4X4 (million mile engine also in the 2003-2009). You may get better mileage out of a V6, but you won’t get a better life out of it compared to a V8 that’s been the same for almost 15 years.

4.6L in my 13 has been a dream thus far. SAIS bypass is the only thing I’ve touched. 161k miles.

You mentioned that it has more lean than the 2022 model. I have an 08 Limited CrewCab and was considering trying the Roadmaster Active Suspension for additional bed payload and sway bar like behavior, but I'm worried about increased ride stiffness when unloaded. I was hoping it could provide more of that coil-over feel on my 08, but that might be too hopeful. Have y'all ever reviewed them and/or have any experience with them? On the surface they sound ideal for leaf spring trucks.

I have the Roadmaster Active Suspension and TRD rear sway bar on my 2013 Tundra SR5 double cab 4x4 and it makes a huge difference. As a contractor, I’ve always got around 1,000lbs of gear in the back so I don’t drive it unloaded much at all, but it’s fantastic and I definitely recommend it.

Don't forget that certain features like the heated seats are now SUBSCRIPTION features. All the hardware is there, the heating coil is in the seat, but you'll need to pay a recurring amount to have it function.

thats not cool. Never had needed any of the stuff but the idea of installing the hardware and still paying for it is ridiculous to me. Trucks aren't trucks anymore. Its a living room on wheels.

V8s in trucks are like peanut butter and jelly. I'll be getting my DC Tundra hopefully soon. The 14-21 body is perfect. 07-13 is too rounded off.

I own a 2021 Tundra Sport. It was one of the last generation two Tundras to come off the production line. It is large, beautiful, powerful, and a gas hog. It is the perfect vehicle. Of course, it is babied and will not be driven the harsh Ontarian winters.

I have a 2011 SR5 that just turned 153,000 miles. Paid off, lifted 2.5 inches, mud tires (kills mileage, but I will never get stuck), 15 MPG on the highway. So should I spend $60k plus sales tax to replace it, or realize it is just broken in and ready to run another 250,000 or more? Easy answer-keep the big V-8, and all the smiles it brings.

I recently had an opportunity to see the new Tundra at my local dealership while I was there ordering a part for my 02’ Tundra SR5 TRD 4WD. The New Tundra I saw had a lift already and looked really well put together. Myself personally, I would rather stick with my old school more analog system w/ the 2uz and 4wd factory rear diff lock. Keeping my dollars in my pocket

100% used Tundra, 45k delta buys a lot of fuel and tires. I’m going to throw all that sensibility out the window and say the only brand-new full size truck I would consider is the Nissan Titan.

Your improved fuel economy is probably more of a result of the new 10 speed transmission. I would like to think that this engine will fair better than Ford's ecoboost.

Just had one of these and our shop yesterday and very disappointed in the build quality it's very so so. there's a lot of issues with this .never buy the first year of anything. Also the customer was disappointed in the fuel mileage in the twin turbo V6 15 MPG what was the point of getting rid of the V8 🙃🙃
