I'll break down some of the upgrades that I've done to the new YZ450F, and I'll discuss some comparisons to my 2019 YZ450FX that I had, and explain things to consider if you're looking for a new dirt bike.

I am 44 and just getting back into riding. I am grateful for your insight here. I was really leaning toward the FX because I thought it would fit my riding style better. Now I think I will go with the 450F and add a few things to it.

Hello, I ride mostly in the woods. Do you know if we’re able to adapt a bigger gas tank to the F?

I don’t see why not. The tank on the FX model is shaped like it is on the F model, but then it drop down like an upside down L. On the YZ450F you have the empty space so I’m sure the FX tank would fit in there. That would give you 2.2 gallons instead of the 1.6 If you ride mostly woods, you may want to consider swapping the fork and shock springs to the lighter weight FX springs. They’re perfect for the woods

Funny I came across this video. I too am an older rider (50yo) and been riding all my life, but just went with the YZ450F for the same reasons. I ride both trail and track, and I love the tuning app. I've been able to take the magic map and change the throttle response for the low end for technical riding. I reduced fuel and timing and she doesn't flame out in the slow technical stuff, then use map 1 for faster flows. I am however, having a hell of a time dialing in the front suspension. I'm 170lbs and turning her in the woods requires way more effort than a track, as she likes to stand up straight if I don't use a more aggressive linear mapping. This bike likes me to stand at all times, which I do anyway, but turning in tight woods is definitely tricky. Do you have a link to where you got the engine mounts from, might be worth a try.

Here’s a link to FCPracing.com That will definitely help, another thing I’ve noticed is that the 2022 model YZ450F has heavier fork springs than the 450FX does, so it holds the front end up a little which throws off the geometry in the woods, and it doesn’t want to turn as well. I’ve had my suspension redone by M9 suspension in Redmond Oregon and he softened up the valving on the initial park of the stroke, but kept the progressive valving for hold up when I ride the track. Changing the valving helped let it ride a little lower in the stroke, thus giving it better turning in the woods.

@@Rodneysnwridesandreviews Thank for replying! Do you know if M9 reduced your oil in the forks too? Unfortunately where I live we don't have a lot of good bike shops, I have the mechanical ability and a pretty decent knowledge of shock tuning. I just made some more adjustments yesterday and will be testing the bike today after work. If they aren't to my liking I'll be removing fluid .5cc at a time to see if that helps before I do a tear down and change the valving. It's a messy job and one of my least favorite things to work on. Thanks again!

Hello Des, I read your comment on this video and noticed you mentioned you have a map for trails/woods. I am too getting a YZ450F and I was wondering if you’d be willing to share that particular woods map you mentioned, please?

I have a ‘21 450fx and absolutely dislike the mechanism for holding the air filter in place. Two flimsy metal tabs to create the seal of the filter to airbox. I guess i should be thankful yamaha used metal tabs and not plastic. The twin air power flo kit would definitely seat the filter good but you have to take out the backfire plate, which leaves a gaping hole for dirt and grit to fall into.

It does, but I’ve never had an issue with that happening. There isn’t any need for the backfire screen since the filter is made of a flame retardant material. The billet aluminum cage does a great job of preventing dirt from getting in the air box, but yes there is a chance when the filter is taken off the bike.

Which do you think is better for sand dunes? FX or F?

The FX has a larger tank, but comes with an 18 rear tire. Most paddles are 19” so it may be harder to find a paddle for the MX model. If it was me, I’d stick with the
