Beem awhile since I've seen a runt just killed by the oldest chick like that. Between the attacks and it not getting any food it was doomed. I don't know if they can ever check the genders by birth order, but I'd bet the nests that end up like this one has a female oldest chick followed by a male or two. The proof seems to be that runt chicks actually survive the nest and aren't beaten to death or starved out like this one. They manage to live with breaks, of course, but they also aren't constantly beaten by the oldest. It's not like the Eagle nests where two are hatched and the oldest one always kills then gets to eat the younger chick. Or as brutal as a multi-chick osprey nest where the oldest chick goes totally nuts if food is short. I saw one of those nests with 3 chicks where the oldest killed the younger chicks by beatings and stealing all the food. Ironically, in that nest, the older one died when a falcon flew in the nest and ate it. Maybe retribution of some kind.

Eagle parents are fierce protectors of their eggs and eaglets from the area's nest predators. What happens to that same instinct during the real time assault from one of their eaglets to another?
@CuriousCat787
@CuriousCat787 2 жыл бұрын
Survival of the fittest! 50-70% of eaglets don't make it to their 1st birthday. Sad statistic! 😹 This rivalry is nothing compared to what hardships they will face in the wild, in addition to starvation, at any age. The parents are governed by instinct and rules of nature. Trust that they know how to preserve their species. The littlest one was considerably smaller and not that far apart in age. We don't know if it was sick or weak and could not fight for its share of the available food. The videograher says there was a food shortage. Probably, the top reason for attacks in nests everywhere. Animals don't kill for no reason. Consider a lion sitting in the midst of a herd of prey. Everything is calm, until the lion gets up and they detect it is hungry. That's when they scatter. It is very hard for us to watch things like this, even knowing the rules of nature, and not be moved. 😹 The interesting thing is that the attacker lied down with its head on the body of the deceased sibling and didn't eat the same as before. This behavior is a form of mourning. It really didn't want to do what it did, it was forced to by reacting to the scarcity of food. Sharing limited/inadequate amounts of food at this developmental stage would produce three malnourished and weak eaglets. The attacker was instinctively trying to survive itself and be strong and healthy enough to carry on its species. I hope this helps. 🙏
@123nlusky
@123nlusky Жыл бұрын
@@CuriousCat787its not survival of the fittest, it’s bully by the dumbest! Can’t tell the difference between a sibling and food drops just because it’s hungry. I’d love to see these nests if the over powering eaglet was removed. It’s interesting that we are happy to call this nature but are told to stand against it in human nature?
@CuriousCat787
@CuriousCat787 Жыл бұрын
@@123nlusky I understand your feelings. But, we can lose sight of the fact that when we have a sick or deformed child, we can get help. They can't. They have little way to treat diseased offspring. Can't exactly call a doctor. The sick, weak, lame, blind, deaf, etc., won't survive in the wild. They have to be able to self feed. The planet has animals all over the place. When these animals die in the wild, these scavengers (birds and mammals) eat the carcasses. By doing that, the dead flesh doesn't rot and become a breeding ground for countless organisms to threaten humans and create pandemics. These animals are helping to keep the planet clean. Animals and birds can smell diseases and even cats and dogs will kill an offspring, and, consume it. Their digestive systems are able to handle pathogens that would kill others in the clutch or litter. But, I do appreciate the human perspective. I am one! Lol! There is a lot going on in nature that we don't understand or know. But, when you study it, you will find as much love and tenderness as there is horror. They know how to keep their species strong. It's man who threatens them and not the other way around. The rules governing nature do not apply to humans. We function with morals, thank God, or we would have massacres every day, in our streets. The fact that you can view these videos and feel compassion for humans under the same or similar circumstances, is a good thing! It separates us from depraved thinking. This is one planet but two different worlds. These one off videos are made to sensationalize and get likes. If you really want to see what nature is all about, I would recommend the channels that show you a family of raptors from mating to fledging. And, yes, when food is plentiful, there is peace in the nest. But, again, the parents have a job to do. Teach their young how to survive in the wild. That requires killing and eating. Sometimes, the parents will detect a diseased or malformed offspring. They might withhold food which weakens the offspring and gives the surviving siblings a lesson. They leave the killing to them. If you observe, for example, a bald eagle's nest, you will see that they waste nothing. Animals and fish are consumed with all their parts, except big bones. Those become "toys" for the eaglets to practice gripping and moving things, much like we teach our children life lessons with toys and cartoons. Check out Lady Hawk's channel where we watch the whole process and you will see wonderful, loving parents raise fierce kids who can be extremely lovable and cute. I hope this has helped in some way. One other thing.... bear in mind that with limited food, we can stretch things until the next paycheck, for instance. But, they cannot envision that. But, I do agree that we must separate what we find acceptable in animals and what we find acceptable in humans. Two entirely different concepts because we can think, reason, choose better paths, etc. That's probably why it was created to be two separate worlds. We need to differentiate between good and bad, acceptable or not. Again, I hope this adds to your thinking to help you see the world through the eye of our creator! You are a thinking person. You are already ahead of the game! Have a blessed day! 😻

@@123nlusky we have an entire society that can assist those in need. eagles don't. who's going to stay behind the extra month+ to feed and fledge this younger baby? biologically, a parent can afford to lose offspring because they can have more. if they die, they can't, and there's less chicks in the world. when you live in a world where you really do depend on your own individual survival, you have to make painful choices like that. we don't have to make painful choices like that anymore. that's the luxury we have, and that's what makes it wrong when we do it anyway. humans are animals, but that doesn't mean we operate the same. we don't even know if they see it like we do morally anyway. remember they are birds. (also the oldest hatchling didn't attack the youngest one because it thought it was food. this is a common instinctual behavior observed in many species that have multiple babies in a litter, and usually happens as a result of food pressure - not having enough to eat)
@chrysology
@chrysology Жыл бұрын
I think it's that until the eggs hatch, they don't know how many will so they must ensure most if not all do. Once they do, survival of the fittest takes over, especially if resources are scarce. This year so far the food has been plentiful.

In evolution the better strategy is helping siblings, not killing them. And we wonder why eagles almost became extinct. This is why humanity is top of the food chain as well. Evolution is blind and has no agency, but we aren't blind and have all of the agency. On topic: the siblings that just stood there and took this shit deserve to die, all they have to do is fight back. They didn't even have the instinct to try to defend themselves.
