A collapse is here or rather a change and you are commenting while in the midst of it. Rome didn't collapse overnight it took hundreds of years due to climatic conditions, a city or two might be in ruins but the system prevailed, one that has depended on growth. A finite planet must mean sooner or later growth will stop and an equilibrium found, we are living through that time possibly, the age pyramid is going to be forever gone in a lot of modern countries, it's been turned sideways, from the age of 30 or so for the next 3 decades there are going to be less people born in a lot of countries, the next three decades, at least, when there are less and less people bring born into a system based off growth might mean we have to look at the word recession in the future as a good thing, it means less and less demand on the planet. 23 countries are going to lose 50% of their population due to old age by 2100, immigration can't be the answer, especially at a time of almost full employment in the countries where the immigrants might be coming from.
