If you are going to plant in the spring I personally don’t see the down side to planting beans instead of buckwheat. If it fails you can still plant your fall blends and if it doesn’t you can seed into the standing beans as they turn yellow and have both greens and grains in the same area. Also buckwheat is just as expensive as beans anymore so it’s essentially a waisted crop when you could have planted beans at the same time instead!

The downside is wasted money and time.
@joasmullett2213

@@aaroncornelison5477 I agree if you don’t plant anything then that would be the cheapest/easiest. I was referring to soybeans vs buckwheat. Jeff is planting buckwheat every year so he has the time and expense of a spring planting. I did the buckwheat method the last 3 years and switched over to soybeans this year and will broadcast WW and WR in them when they yellow for the double crop of greens and grains. I get something from my spring planting for the hunting season(bean pods) vs buckwheat that you terminate in August. Best part is that it didn’t cost me any extra time or money!

I guess if you have a plot that’s to small to withstand browse pressure you will have a one time cost of putting an electric fence around it but I think that would be worth the amount of extra attraction every year, also buckwheat might get browsed to heavy as well in that scenario

Michigan is the 2nd most agriculturally diverse state. I plant my Astronomy domine sweet corn 1st week of May before storms down state MI. My goal is habitat improvement for humans and wildlife. I plant food plots for humans and wildlife. Mixing domestic strawberries in with the wild. We are building hugelkultur beds with all the extra dead rotted timbers and ferns. We have so many different kinds of berries. Edge of deer wintering complex in the U.P. We have noticed buckwheat growing here and there after planting a 10x10 patch. We do oats, peas, and buckwheat. We are gluten free so no rye. Stuff we can use as well as animals. More of a food forest concept so I cast out the seed. That's what got me looking at food plot seeds. Price vs volume. 50 rutabaga seeds for 3.50 or 1lb for 5$ That purple kale grows great. Been composting it because it grows too good. I and the animals only eat kale when its small. No till helps with my sweet corn or the ground is too soft and corn falls over during storms. I like the clover under fruit trees. I have honey bees so even down state at town house we planet clover in the yard. The clover did better than the grass with the drought. Never though to plant stuff opening day bow Oct 1st. Food plots aren't just for wildlife. Venison Pastie food plot blend in the U.p. is what I am going for. All harvested off the same food plot. I only spend 45 days a year on property in the U.P. and every other year extra 9-14 days for bear and bow season deer hunting. Deer carcass makes good bear bait.

Jeff, glad to hear you will have corn next year for sale. I am hoping you will NOT be coating the corn with Neonictanoids/insecticides. First, they add cost. More importantly, studies are indicating elevated levels in deer eating Ag corn. I will absolutely continue to buy seed from you but not with the coatings. Looking forward to your offering next season.

I wanted to reach out to the group on here. We just had a massive 4400 acer wild fire in huntsville texas and it burned up and 50% of the 180 lease I have and about maybe 40 acres of one of the other guys leases. We belong to a 1800 acer shared lease. I want to 1 stabilize the soil, 2 attract deer and pigs. There are alot of hogs already. Looking for something quick growing to stabilize the soil then something to help sustain wild life. This is big big woods and hard hunting. This isn't farm land.

Unfortunately there are some pretty cheap seed blends out there for a reason...so without knowing or having the time to study a lot of other factors with what you have...it would be impossible to recommend an appropriate mix. Part of what you pay for is not having to figure out what a proper mix ratio is...as well as for quality seed. Bottom line, there isn't enough time in the day to analyze poor seed mixes for folks online and make recommendations...even before I owned a seed company 😊
