For some reason the National Rental Car lot at the Cleveland Airport was STACKED, but the assistant manager showed me some mad love, but letting me take the 2023 BMW X5 45e out for the week. I loved this thing so much. It isn't the best looking SUV on the market, but it's quick, loaded with technology, fuel-efficient, future proofed and quite an amazing ride for the price.

Just picked one of these up a week ago and still learning about the extensive tech. This review taught me a few things, for instance I had no idea how to change the view on the parking camera. Thanks! Two additional observations: 1. The heads up display is really nice especially when using Navigation. I think it's part of the Executive package. 2. The additional step unlocking the fuel door is because of the pressurized fuel system used for the hybrid. It helps keep the gas fresh since it's possible to drive in electric mode for a long time without emptying the tank. Fun review!

@Don Gauthier A complete review?? Well I hate to be fussy...but... in the boot, a safety kit??? That would normally be the first aid kit, probably not there because it's a rental. Secondly, a few things this reviewer didn't know. Examples: how to use the suspension button properly; and talking of buttons, the 'radio' buttons can also be used as shortcuts for your some of your favorite functions; calling the infotainment dial a 'knob' is not quite correct, it sure aint a knob! and etc. So yeah, overall an ok review, but this guy needs to properly research a car he is going to review, which personally I would do if I was a car reviewer 😉 Overall if I had the money (not likely!), this car would be in my list of possibilities for purchase.

Thank you thank you for a thorough and enthusiastic review! I’ve been looking for an in depth review about the 45e for several days but most other sites just review the 40i and briefly explain the 45e. I really liked that you went through the on-screen options and the Ambient Lighting-WOW- no one ever reviewed the car at night so I had no idea it lit up like that. The only part you’re wrong about is the Manhattan Green color- it’s actually very popular and has a prismatic bronze effect in different light and most owners enhance the color with the M sport package and Cognac interior. Anyway I’m sold on this hybrid. Great job!

The 45e is a hoot. I also took the M50i for a drive last weekend -- it was BONKERS. I had a huge grin on my face the whole time.

@@TheHungryRoad that would be a really hard call. The m50i was an amazing amount of fun. But the gas mileage would totally suck and I'd probably end up in jail. I thought the 45e was also a ton of fun though. I really loved that air suspension too. And it has plenty of pep. I'd probably go for the 45e. It's still very fast and still lots of fun, but has the ability to run on the battery as well, which would be awesome for around town driving.

@9.32 - note that what you are showing here are not leather seats. They are synthetic and what BMW calls “sensafin”. Leather seats are also available as an option for the 45e

Good review bro, I have the 2022 model in photonics blue with almost all the bells and whistles available at that time. What I did not opt for is M sport package, sunroof with led lights and the laser headlights. But at that time with all packages chosen it still was under 75K before taxes etc. almost a year and enjoying it. now the latest 50e version has gone up significantly in price.

This is a fantastic review like no other, i appreciate you. I subscribed. Now, according to BMW this car is already old!! Can you do a review and comparison of the new 50e? I believe BMW hit it with the 2022-2023 line but the 2024 LCIs are somewhat dissapointing in many senses how much they changed probably for worse, interesting question to analyze... would it be worh the upgrade? Thanks and keep it up!

However I’m at the mercy of whatever the rental car lot in whatever location I’m working at has. Lol. Hopefully someday I’ll be recognized my manufacturers and they’ll start sending me press cars.

Just get our 2 week ego. We are buying X5 from 2000. Before this one we had diesel. We will probably go with the diesel again , but BMW don't sell them with diesel anymore in US. We choose to try hybrid then. So far we like it. We ordered ours with some options and still try to learn them. LOL

Does this car have executive package? Does the shifting gear have glass ? How does it look without glass? Also how does it sped up on highway with pure EV mode?

This car only had some pieces of the Executive Package such as the bigger infotainment screen and the panoramic sunroof. This did not have the crystal glass shifter. Somewhere near the middle of the video is a shot of the standard shifter. Acceleration in pure EV mode is sluggish, but that’s because the car is trying to preserve battery. If you want the acceleration you need to drive in sport mode.

Dude, like your review! Except, 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, 375 hp, 460 lb. Feet. Got one, first 18.4 gallons, drove 753 miles. Level 2 charger on the way and should be able to get 1,000 miles. Oh yeah, it is fast!

Yes it is indeed! It’s the exact same battery and will give you an estimated 31 miles of range on a full charge.

@@TheHungryRoad BMW individual colors only a few dealers are willing to do, you have to request early. I got lucky and my dealer was gifted one from BMW with frozen marina bay blue paint the day I went shopping.

I have 2023 45e, it is a downgrade from 2022 model. Less choice on inner color choice. They took off park recorder from parking assistance package. There are other things taken off from the optional package list.....

what percentage of the time would you say you drive the vehicle in EV only mode?

Well, for the sake of doing this review I only drove in only EV mode for the portion you saw. However, if this were my own personal vehicle, I’d try to keep it in EV mode as much as possible to save fuel! I didn’t have a way to charge it my hotel so I needed to conserve the charge as much as possible.

Yeah, it’s a plug-in hybrid so is more-so meant to extend gas mileage rather than be fully electric. However, BMW does have an entire line of electric vehicles. It’s the “i” series.

@@thepsi1919. Of course. KWH is just the size of the battery. It’s like saying the size of its electric gas tank. The mileage is what’s important because the heavier a car, the more power it takes to move it and the lower the electric range. Good luck on your hunt!
