Guys, read up on why the F450 is rated at 14k, it's not due to the frame, it's due to how the government rates commercial and non-commercial trucks. The F450 would easily be rated at 16k + if the non commercial standard wasn't 14k. Ford is just trying to put F450 trucks in non-commercial buyers hands.

I’m not sure why this channel doesn’t have more subscribers. There’s more information on these trucks and what they can do, from a real world use. Heck, last year, you were in Pittsburgh and gave such great information about the steel plants, that I had my high school kids watch it. Great job.

If you're constantly struggling with a 15,000 gvw limit and 40K gross combined, maybe you should be looking at a 6x4 with air brakes. Then you could carry a lot more freight per load without strangling yourself. The whole purpose of the F450 is to have a longer lifespan and better capability at the high end of the 14K weight range without wearing it out. The F350 rating is for occasional maximums but not constant maximum loading every trip. Sort of like the comparison between a gas engine vs diesel.

I own both. My F450 2021 6.4L diesel, 4.88:1 axle- GVWR of 33000 lbs. it has a tighter turning radius due to the wider stance, larger higher ply tires & definitely a “mean look” on the roads. Due to my towing requirements, I will never go back to the F350.

I drove 2020 F350 DRW 6.7 for 60k miles and was waiting for 2023 F450 Limited for 11 months. With no end in sight, I jumped the ship and purchased 2023 Ram 3500 Limited DRW HO 6.7 , Aisin Trans, 4.1 Gear. I had full body Suntek PPF and Ceramic coating plus nano ceramic tint for interior including the windshield. I am overly surprised how good is Ram 3500 Limited. It has better interior, smoother with auto leveling kit, TPMS, Apple like keypad. Gas mileage is par with F450 Limited. Around 15.5 driving empty. Tire will be cheaper on Ram 3500 than F450 Limited. It is not a fast truck, but fast enough . I can drive few hours and my back doesn't hurt and leg is not cramping up. I do not tow, but do haul some weight and this is my daily vehicle. I will take the Ram over Ford now but do miss 10 speed on gas mileage. I am 5'10" tall and it is very hard to see the front. On Ram, I usually have to wait before taking a chance on a tight spot.

I was torn between the two trucks as well. I ended up ordering the 450. I think if you're towing close to max capacity a lot the lower gearing and heavier brakes and axles is more important than the rating. It's a head scratcher why they don't change the rating.

Glad to hear it!! We were a little heavy on the options, so we could've done better on payload. But definitely can't complain. Just as an observation, we're finding that we use the brakes a lot more on this truck a lot more heavily than on our old Duramax. The Super Duty exhaust brake doesn't do nearly as much braking. So the "small" brakes on an F-350 with 17-inch rims definitely won't last as long as the F-450 with bigger wheels (and brake rotors, etc).

One thing that helped out was with the newer '23+ 450's, Ford was able to lighten them up a bit and I know a Plat can carry about 150lbs more than the '20-22's can. We're going with the 450 because we're getting a 45' toy hauler and I want the maneuverability more than anything else for getting in and out of RV parks. But you're right, between the wife and I and 2 golden retrievers, that's about 525lbs. Add 150lbs for the hitch and prob the same in my tool box and to be safe, I'm looking at 850lbs of 4900lbs gone right there. And our RV is 3600lbs stock on the pin, and prob more about 4000-4100 once we load it out. But we have a 900lb Indian Roadmaster in the rear to offset some pin weight and as soon as Reese develops a 25k goosebox, we'll prob shift to one of those to ditch the 5th wheel.

Enjoyed the video. From what I understand, Ford keeps the GVRW on the F450 at 14,000# to keep it a class 3 vehicle. As soon as you hit 14,001# it becomes a class 4, and it faces different regulations. But, I do agree. If you need max payload and heavy towing, the F350 is the way to go. If you’re happy with a little less payload for the truck itself, you can tow a little over 1,000 # more with the F450(I wish I knew the exact numbers). Totally depends on your needs. I’m just wondering if you could put a 2” spacer on the front wheels, and then adjust the bump stops to get a better turning radius on the F350? As well, if you did this, would that reduce the front axle rating? I did that on my 2004 F250 so I could use 20” wheels and not hit the front leaf springs.

So an f350 high output dually with 3.55 gears can tow 27k bumper and 31k~ GN/5th wheel. The same truck with 4.10 gears can tow 28k bumper and 35k~ GN/5th wheel. F450 high output can tow 30k bumper and 33,500k GN/5th wheel. In reality they will all tow amazing. F450 get the wide track front end and larger wheels. The f350 with 4.10s would be nice if you can find one.

Also, the difference in any given trim the 350 and 450 DRW's is only about 600lbs, not 900lbs as you mentioned. You can get a spec'd out Platinum with almost 4900lbs payload.

You really can't go wrong with either, but the reasons why I bought a '22 F350 Platinum FX4 Dually with the 4.10 LSD is because...I prefer the 550 pound lighter curb weight. I also prefer the less aggressive, but still a great all around ratio of 4.10 that is better for the mainly highway driving I do versus the 4.30's. Also, the Forged 17" wheels on the F350 are lighter weight, and there are far more tire choices for less money than the F450's odd sized 19.5" wheels. The co-owner -(my brother), of the car hauling company that I also co-own, owns a '22 F450 King Ranch FX4 6.7 Dually. He plans on getting an F350 like mine next time he buys a truck. My F350 rides a bit nicer, it's quicker, it's lighter weight obviously, it handles better with that lighter weight and wider tires, and it even stops as well as his F450, despite the smaller brakes mine has... The lighter 550 pounds and the wider tires actually make up for the smaller brakes in stopping distances we noticed. The only things I like better about his F450 is the better turning radius & the look of his 19.5" wheels. His tires are too skinny looking though. He's going two sizes wider to 245's on his 450, which will also make his gearing a bit taller, which he wants. Anyway, both trucks pull our three car, 48' Enclosed Gooseneck trailers with ease, and these trucks both look amazing doing so, all while being extremely luxurious on the inside. It's all just a matter of preference. We both prefer our Fords over our previous 2019 Ram 3500 6.7 HO Laramie Dually trucks we used when we started the company. Sorry for the long comment. I type fast lol.

Good point. To be clear though, we're not talking about the 10-lug, super high capacity axle. Just the same strength axle as on the F-350, but with some extra width so you can turn tighter. Hope that makes sense. Apparently 8-10 years ago you were able to order the wide front axle on the F-350.... haven't dug into it in a lot of depth though.

It's not about the frame, it's about staying under commercial weights. The F350 and especially the F450, can handle far more than 14k, but if you put the truck over a 14k rating, it will then be a commercial truck, Ford is just trying to play by the numbers.

Tjis explains why Ford can't, or didn't rate the F450 higher, if they did, you would need a CDL, because it would then be a commercial truck. Anything over 14k gvwr, is a commercial truck.
@ArmyProperty
@ArmyProperty Жыл бұрын
@@jeffclark4008 our understanding is that a truck with GVWR under 26K, or a combination with GCWR (i.e. sum of truck GVWR and trailer GVWR) under 26K, does not require a CDL, per DOT / FMCSA regs. Are you really saying a 16K truck -- by itself -- requires a CDL? Is this in writing anywhere? Keep in mind that Joe 6-Pack can rent a Penske box truck or 26-foot U-Haul which has a GVWR around 20K -- give or take -- with just a plain old driver's license. Thanks.

It is derated truck.. F350 will squat and F450 stands straight. . But for being legal, one may take 350.. But for me, for using it only for payload, I will use F450. I have both F350 DRW and F450 DRW. Both rides pretty good. F350 tires last about 25k miles while F450 19.5 lasts about 70k miles. It costs about $430 each for F450 and $300 for F350. So, do your math. F450 19.5 tires last 2.5 to 3 times longer. F450 rides just as well as F350. Only time it jolts is when I go over the rail road track at faster speed. I put 95 front and 85 rear for F450 and 75 and 65 for F350. I will choose F450 for the future purchase.

I don't think that fuel reduces your payload. If you look at the door sticker is says "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed" (fill in the blank). Says nothing about a full tank of gas. I have seen elsewhere that the payload maximum is cargo, occupants, pin weight.
@ArmyProperty
@ArmyProperty 9 ай бұрын
Yes, generally that’s true. In our case, we weighed in with the truck / driver and a half-tank of fuel at 8,700lb. Taken out of the 14k GVWR, that left 5,300lb of payload / pin weight before we busted the max weight on the truck. Hope that makes sense!

I’m buying a truck for hauling a 15k dump trailer and considering the F450 just for the turning radius, since the 14 ft trailer turns way sharper than my f350 right now. I also think the F450 is better because it has stronger brakes and larger tires that should last long especially with heavier loads.

Yes! And clearly we didn’t break it down well enough! The F-450 pickup truck is very different from the F-450 chassis cab. In a lot of ways - but the major issue we were raising about the pickup truck version is that it’s only rated for 14k total weight, but it has about 900lb of extra curb weight than the F-350, which means it actually has 900lb LESS available payload than the F-350. The F-450 chassis cab doesn’t have this problem, because it’s rated for 16k total weight.
@BIGDAVE5352
@BIGDAVE5352 Жыл бұрын
If they rated the F450 PU at 16K you would get the de tuned diesel that is in the chassis cab. Believe me, it’s all numbers on paper. The F450 is twice the pickup over the F350 dually. Heavier frame, commercial tires and big brakes. The F450 PU is appropriately 960lbs. Heavier over the F350. I agree with you on them wearing out steer tires and the ride is hard. I’ve owned 5 F450 pickups.
@ArmyProperty

Nothing wrong with that detuned engine! I think the chassis cab has 330hp / 950lb-ft which “should” work for most people! Again, the problem we’ve got with the F-450 pickup is all about payload. When you’ve only got 14k to work with, losing 1,000lb of payload is a big deal.
