Kris and I learned the lesson the hard way, on which truck will tow our 44' Riverstone Legacy 39FKTH. We thought we did all of our homework, and we also trusted our dealers when we told them our numbers. We came to learn, you can't trust your truck salesperson to do the homework for you. We were told our Ford F-350 SRW would be fine for towing our 21,000 pound beast. It pulled it fine, but we were 1,000 pounds overweight in our payload capacity. We ended up going to a different Ford dealer and purchased a Ford F-450 DRW. We can't stress enough the importance of your safety and purchasing the right truck for your situation. If you're looking at fifth wheels, you need to know what your coaches pin weight is, verses what the potential trucks payload capacity can handle.

I used my 2019 F450, and my 30 foot Gooseneck flatbed equipment trailer to haul eleven tons...22000 pounds...of Hay...up a 7% hill in 5th gear at 55 mph, on cruise.

That kiosk is something that should be on the Ford website. I just sold my F-150 for essentially the same reason. I'm only pulling a 6,000lb trailer, but with the passengers, cargo, and tongue weight of the trailer, we were at or beyond the 1,500lb payload capacity. I have an F-350 SRW on order, which is overkill for this trailer, but I don't want to buy another new truck in two years if I upgrade.

Justin, as you just learned... I feel ya! It hurts, but like I said, I’d rather have too much truck than not enough. We loved our F-350 SRW, but she couldn’t handle the payload. You’re going to love it! I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. 👍🏻

Same story my 150 1600 payload is not enough for a 8k lbs tt. My f350 srw order was finally just built.

Great video, well thought out! My husband fortunately did all the numbers when we got our fifth wheel, and then we downsized to a Lance slide in camper. We upgraded our truck, and I say to anyone towing a fifth wheel or camper , think safety first

@@markb9764 We were looking at DRV Suites and The Riverstone legacy lines. We wanted full paint and to just cross over into a more luxury line of fifth wheel. At the time we were looking DRV didn’t offer a toyhauler version. They do now, but we like the “toy box” version we have in our Riverstone 39fkth. For the money, we felt Riverstone offered quite a bit more and was a little cheaper than DRV Suites. DRV makes a great RV too, but for the money, we went with the Riverstone. We haven’t regretted it once. We’ve had minor issues, but have gotten them taken care of. I definitely recommend paying for an extended warranty on any RV. Forest River customer service has been better than expected. The Riverstone group has been good to deal with.

Great video, I learned a lot from Chad as well. I’ve been in RVing for almost 25 years and have had 6 RVS and 4 different sized trucks and still felt like I needed more research when I pulled the trigger last year on the F450. My GMC pulled great but switching to the Dually makes such a difference and the F450 with heavier and longer trailers is by far the safest idea. 👍🏼

What I mention was wrong with my camper and my f150 was real close to maximum weight. NOW I am so far ahead of any weight problems towing is a breeze, I am going to show your video to my friends who are real close to maximum, thanks

Yah, the 350 SRW pulled it fine, but we were over weight in our payload capacity. We definitely learned a lesson there. We love our F450! We can drive with confidence now.

I went through the exact same thing. We bought a three-quarter ton truck that the dealer said we could pull our fifth wheel with. Sometime later I started crunching numbers out of curiosity and found that I was way over my cargo carrying capacity, although my towing capacity was just fine. For our rig we ended up having to buy a 1 ton Dooley diesel. Works great with our fifth wheel but I wasn’t too happy we had to make the change from a financial standpoint.

The F450 and the F350drw have the same payload capacity, and GVWR. Same rear sususpension, front suspension...but the 450 frame is boxed...F450 is derated to avoid dmv costs,. 25:06

In one of your videos where your tour your riverstone I provided this comment: "We have been looking at this floor plan of trailer for some time. This fall we went out and purchased a new truck and found that most SRW 1 tons were no where near the cargo capacity to tow this rig. Specifically we looked at a F350 SRW and it only had a CCC of 3230 lbs. With the trailer empty plus my wife and I with our dog we would have been over by 800 lbs.... allow for some items to go in the trailer and we quickly realized no 1 ton SRW would legally pull this trailer, was forced to get a dually. Beautiful trailer, enjoy it". Welcome to the 450 club. Yes it is legally rated the same as the 350 and because of that the payload is less since the tuck weighs more... but you cant beat it. I 100% agree buy way more truck then what you need.. It is safer, the truck wont work so hard and the drive is more enjoyable and less stressful... you have a beautiful combo!

I just got a f250 with a 3500 pound weight capability, and I am 3000 pounds over my campers weight , just saying it is night and day difference, great video towing is not scary anymore

Just picked up our 2021 Lariat F350 dually 7.3L with 4.30:1 ratio to pull our new Momentum 381M. Looked in the door and cargo capacity is 6053 lbs.

Thank you for posting you cargo capacity no one ever does. Being a truck camper guy this is the most important to people like me. Good to get a ball park on a gasser dually. Payload on a gasser is almost always higher by a good amount than a diesel.

Good video and great info for towing. Question on the kiosk, did it let you pick your trim level when looking at towing numbers? Trim packages effect payload quite a bit and that would be a great feature to show. Thanks for sharing.

Good looking truck I use a dually to pull a 12.000lb travel trailer pulls good no sway with trailer

Dean, That’s great! Sounds like you have a setup that is safe and keeps you moving down the highway. Swaying can become an issue, when pulling from the bumper. I know a lot of folks use sway bars. Once you drive the F450 with that widetrack front end and you won't want an F350.

Its easy to get the #s, use an online weight calculator. I am surprised the dealer didn’t do that, and that they didn’t push the 450 before! Its not about what people say or think, it’s black & white. I had similar experience using air bags on a 2500HD to tow 40’ WeekendWarrior. It worked but in retrospect wasn’t legal or safe. Replacing our F150 w/an F350 Lariat crew 4x 7.3, 7500# trailer. Only drawback seems to be the 350's wider turning radius, which hopefully will not be a problem during Search & Rescue missions.

Salesman can get caught up in the sale and only tell you half of the truth, like, our F-350 SRW definitely had the pulling power, but not the legal payload capacity. Safety has to come first! I personally don’t like the looks of a duallly but if it’s necessary for pulling, absolutely! Maybe there’s a way to beef up a 350 SWD to handle it. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great video! 👍

There’s also swaying back and forth that takes place, and having four wheels is a game changer for that. I know what you mean about the looks, but safety comes first. 👍🏻 Thanks again, Michael.

I watched another video on the difference in payload of a 350 drw compared to 450 drw and that person said that the 350 has a 1000 pounds more payload than the 450 because they 450 eats it up in the extra weight of the truck.

I talked with Dustin at Crossroads Ford. This is his response. “A 350 DRW 4x2 gains 920 lbs over a 450. If they go 350 DRW 4x4 they only gain 460 lbs more, than an F-450 4x4 DRW. Going 4x4 also eats up payload. The F-450 is definitely heavier than the 350. It’s give and take on either truck. They both are great trucks. Thanks for leaving a comment!

@@mkexp. While this is true, the salesman in your video was simply wrong... he stated several times that the 450 had a higher playload than the 350 DRW... which is simply false. The 450 is generally a better tow vehicle but the 350 can carry more weight.

This is due to the 450drw weighing more than the 350. It was something that I considered when looking at both trucks. That's if you go with the pickup. If you go cab an chassis you can configure the payload way higher than the pickup variations. The more you research and look at the numbers a chassis cab be had for cheaper with more capabilities and get a sweet custom hauler bed with external storage

You’ll still will WANT the Air Bags for ride comfort. !! The turning radius and brakes are awesome! You give up a little ride comfort with the 450. The tires are very sensitive to air pressure, 95- 100 psi. Also the tires don’t start driving good till you get over 5K on them. Another thing is I had to go to a dealer in Atlanta to get my front end realigned, world of difference. We pull the 42 FSKG, don’t forget to change your brake settings!! I have a 2020 f450 and my 5thwheel weighed in a tad under 23 k . I pull it with a GenY gooseneck to 5thwheel hitch . I run 90 in front and 80 in the back tires like the door sticker suggested and it pulls really well .

Say what you want...trucks and trailers are officially rated to fit into federal and state requirements . For example, a F450 chassis cab gvwr is 16000 pounds,requiring a Commercial license .

I just bought a 450 for the same reason as you. Nice truck! One thing that no one talks about is you mentioned the f350 DRW vs f450 DRW. Because they both have the 14,000 lb GVWR. The F450 is heavier than the F350 so it has less payload. Which is true legally. But it is a beefier truck than the 350. So in reality it is stronger but we are limited by the 14000 lb legal limit. I would not go over the legal limit. My point is in reality it’s a beefier truck. Nice video.

At first I scratched my head, but it is stronger and the turn radius and the heavy duty brakes are very nice. I learned the lesson the hard way, but so glad to be in the right truck now. I currently have 2020 F350 Dually Diesel Lariat. it it a great truck, but wish I had massage seat, adjustable cruise control. I don't pull trailer but do carry up to about 2500 lbs time to time. Things I don't like about my truck is that it doesn't give me the beeping sound on line change warning when other vehicle is in the lane that I want to merge. Does your 450 have a beeping warning sound for the lane change? I drive about 25k miles per year and live in Texas where turning radius is not critical. I had 4 trucks in my life time. 2 Chevy's and 2 Fords. - Ford F350 SRW and Ford F350 Dually. Do you think I should stay with F350 and get higher model? You are right about payload. F450 is beefier and can truthfully handle higher weight. I know the mpg and tire costs will be higher. And it doesn't have the tire monitor gage which doesn't make sense.

@@mkexp. no, got tired of waiting, went to the largest ford truck dealer in the country and bought a 24 F450 lariat ultimate Rapid Red with the H/O 6.7 and scales. Love it. Don't care for the tire vibration above 65 mph, but it is what it is until I change the tires

Also the 450 has a much more harsher ride than the 350 because the 450 has G rated tires which most of the 350 trucks have E rated. The 450 has a larger towing capacity than the 350. You need to check your numbers. You need to check everything. Usually when you see payload it's taking in account a 2 wheel regular cab pickup.

Thanks for the compliment and the comment! On our 2021 F-450, we don’t have to take a tire off to air it up. They have a quick fill valve cover over the stem and I have a longer extension and she fills up fast. I’ve heard of that though. I’m very thankful I don’t have to go through that process. Look at putting a 50- 100 gallon auxiliary tank in the bed. You won't have to stop nearly as often. I put a 67 gallon tank in my SRW F350 and love it.

@@mkexp. the tank weighs very little as it's made from HDPE. Figure then 7 pounds per gallon of diesel. 500-550 lbs tops. Worth it for the extended range. Probably less than that as you are replacing metal with HDPE.

@@mkexp. I used a Titan replacement tank, but they also make back of bed 25-100 gallon auxiliary tanks. It makes it nice because I can plan out Kroger gas stations where I get 1.00$ off of diesel across the Western US.

Congratulations! Love the 450 I’m looking at the same upgrade right now. My Srw 350 is within tow spec easily but 450 carries that weight better. Also on my job a long bed would be so much better platform. Turn radius is amazing. I agree overkill is the better option when your life is on the line. I mean we are traveling at 70 plus mph with big load.

If the dealer is going to use that calculator, he could at least put in the right numbers. He had it set for a conventional trailer (not fifth wheel) and 10% tongue weight (fifth wheels are closer to 20-22%). And that calculator just gets you book numbers, not actuals. That Platinum actually has lower cargo carrying capacity than an XL. Compare the door frame sticker weights for CCC. What's the sticker number of your specific F450?

On the F350 how much closer to the needed payload could you get by eliminating the diesel which weighs 600-700 lbs more than the 7.3 gas?

We were well over a thousand pounds with our Riverstone. Riverstone’s are heavy fifth wheel’s. Plus our kitchen with a residential refrigerator is in the nose and we have a generator that weighs 300lbs too. We needed the payload and the torque and power of a diesel engine. Things like a diesel engine, moonroof and various trims packages do add weight and take away from your payload capacity. Thanks again for watching a leaving a comment. - Michael

We’re considering getting a Riverstone rear kitchen model. To do so, I have to upgrade my truck as well and I’ve been hoping to find a SRW that would replace my daily driver. After a lot of research, I too found that a dually is necessary, but I just can’t justify one as a daily driver. Unfortunately, I think this is going to postpone our purchase. 😔

Our famous last words were, "we don't want a dually as a daily driver", but we've had the f-450 for two weeks now and really haven't noticed a tremendous difference. They are expensive, I get it, if it's not in the budget. I hate to hear that it may stop your purchase. We love our Riverstone and wish at the start of the purchasing process we wouldn't have been so stuck on the thought of driving a dually around town. Other than having to wash it at home, instead of a carwash, or driving through bank drive thru's, it's been good. I hope you're still able to purchase a Riverstone, the rear kitchen plan is great too! Thanks again!

A lot of SRW gasoline optioned 1-tons will have significantly higher payload capacities. The weight difference in the diesel and gasoline is significant. There is a HUGE amount of difference in torque, but all most all gasoline variants are quite capable. Just an FYI if you wanted to stay with a SRW with a DRW "like" payload. That being said, you can tow in crosswinds with a DRW effortlessly 👍

Love how a dealers will tell you anything to sell a vehicle. What are the repercussions if you were to be in an accident if you’re towing over your payload capacity?

Some people have told me a person could sue them. I’m not a legal expert, so I don’t know if that’s accurate. I’ve had people comment on this video with the same issue that I had. Thankfully, we didn’t have any issues towing it. The engine has plenty horses under the hood to pull it, with the 6.7 diesel, but there wasn’t enough there in the payload department with a SRW truck for the weight of our rig. You’re right, the numbers don’t lie, but you have to have a knowledgeable salesman who understands the math too. Then they can put people in the proper truck that meets their towing needs. We didn’t fully understand the numbers at first and neither did our salesman. Most people getting into Rving don’t understand it. That’s why we made this video, to help people learn from our mistake. The F450 is the way to go for the tight turning ability. I drive a 21 F350 crew cab long bed Dually diesel and I love it. My payload capacity is 5,680 which is usually a little higher than the F450. But the 450 has bigger brakes and 4:30 rear gears as opposed to my 4:10. Regardless, they both tow very heavy trailers with relative ease. The more fancy options and higher trim level to purchase,, the lower your payload capacity will be. So many folks get offended when I bring up payload capacity and the potential liability exposure associated with towing overweight.

We also have the moonroof option and that took away our some from our payload. I really liked the wide track turn radius, bigger brakes, and the 4:30 gear. Payload capacity is huge when towing a trailer and it’s important to understand. Thanks again!

@@mkexp. that is why I want a 450. The 350 dually actually has better payload and nearly the same towing. The 350 single wheel has a gross combined of 30k, which is still a LOT of hauling, but the 2,000lbs of less payload makes a huge difference. I still can't believe the gross combined rating for the 450 is over 43k now! That is INSANE! That is class 5 truck range from only a few years ago! Just think if you could go back in time with a 2020 F450 and show it to a Ford truck engineer a few decades ago and tell them it can handle 43k!

What about the extra tire maintenance cost? No TPM, How do you maintain your tires? Do you have a specific tire shop you use for rotation? and lower mpg? I have 2020 Ford F350 Dually with 6.7 Diesel Lariat. I don't pull trailer. I do carry up to 2500-3000 lbs once or twice per year.

The dry weight of our fifth wheel is 17,726. Our GVWR is 21,000 - That’s what we can carry max load. I’d have been tempted to keep my SRW at 16k… But now I’m a firm believer in having what I’d call “too much” of a truck. DRW trucks help in braking, sway and it just feels more secure and safer. Only have a few hundred miles on it but it's awesome. Tons of power and torque, very comfortable interior, and believe it or not, rides smoother than the 2020 GMC Denali dually I traded. I could go on and on. Really happy I went with the 450.

Your SRW was a shortbed. Geometry alone is wrong for 5th wheel. (And all those who read this and say how well they do with theirs, please just watch the video again because they are saying same thing.) The f450 is a big step up. Oddly the numbers on it are almost completely identical to a F-350 but clearly in real life it is not. I used a SRW to haul a 41 footer from Florida to South Dakota twice. No issues towing or handling. I later got a dually then a 450 dually. Hands down 450 superior but I am actually going BACK to a SRW LONGBED, (after all it’s not my sister’s truck). The reason for me is the ten or so trips a year traveling less than 200 miles the SRW is plenty and less cost over all during the year.

F450 by spec is medium class but “detuned” on paper to keep light, upgraded wheels on truck and Motorsports GN stacker all aluminum to Alcoa wheels…sorry more accurate is “derated” because performance better but derate so not medium class

You can’t blame the dealership. You should of did your numbers before hand. I am sorry but this is all on you not the sales person to know if that truck has enough payload to haul you camper because he is not the one loading the camper up with gear. Own up to your own mistake .

I own my mistake and paid a price for it. You shouldn’t assume that I didn’t know our numbers. I did, and I gave our salesman all the numbers and information he needed on our fifth wheel. He knew all of them. He’s supposed to be the knowledgeable expert on super duty trucks. Although, we can’t always trust that they have that knowledge. Everyone should do their due diligence before purchasing. To my understanding then, I did too, but most of us aren’t truck experts and totally understand the in’s and out’s of GVWR, front GAWR, rear GAWR, payload capacity, curb weight and more. I can assure you that my first salesman didn’t understand what super duty truck I needed. I have a lot more knowledge now after going through that, but that’s life. We live and learn. In the end, I want to help those who are or were in the same situation I was in. Thanks for the comment Shawn. - Michael

Geared differently to compensate for the larger tires but the engine is no different. Bigger brakes axles frame suspension but not motor

Why didnt you just take your srw f350 across the cat scales with all people and gear as you would be going down the road with a full tank of fuel and just run the math Also careful at 21000lbs of just trailer weight many states require a non cdl class a or a full cdl to have a gcwr of over 26000lbs

Great ideas… Our dry weight is 17,726. Our GVRW can be 21,000lbs. I have a class A CDL license, with doubles, triples and tanker endorsement. I’ve loved having a DRW truck. My 2020 F450 is the worst driving vehicle I have ever had it wonders all over the road I think the problem is the trailer pro backup the electric over hydraulic steering. I have had 4 of the F 450 this is the only one with trailer pro backup.

Wide track catches the ruts in the pavement more and that will cause it too wander some . I’ve experienced it some but it’s very rare , mainly depends on road conditions.

Using numbers only want to use 70% of max payload, stop this “feeling” talk, your door sill lists payload, axel weights, tire weight and go to Cat scale loaded after fueling up and tanks full, bet 80%+ RVers overloaded, I wish CDL required so RVers educated
