Red Bull's Max Verstappen achieved the near-impossible in Monaco qualifying when he found over 0.3sec in the final sector to take the pole on his final lap. In this video, Peter Windsor offers a suggestion of where Max created his advantage and, with his own photographs, compares Max's approach to the La Rascasse corner sequence with that of his team-mate, Sergio Perez, and also with that of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. Fernando nonetheless qualified on the front row in P2 - and P3, thanks to a three-place grid penalty imposed upon Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for impeding McLaren's Lando Norris (the notice of which was too late for inclusion in this video) now goes to Alpine's very impressive Esteban Ocon. Carlos Sainz and Leclerc start P4-P6 for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton lining up P5 in the revamped Mercedes after shunting the car on Saturday morning.

Alonso was the slowest in the top 10 in the final sector at 19.1, most others did 18.9, Max did a 18.8. That’s where the .3 came from. All it was is Alonso was fast through Sector 1 and 2 and had a slow sector 3 and Max was the opposite, so it equals out in the end. If Alonso did an average sector 3, he would be on pole. But was an incredible qualifying.

To everyone who is interested, there is a side by side of the laps of Max and Fernando up on the f1 yt channel. If I watched it correctly, Max is .2 behind between turns 14 and 15. He take that back to .1 behind in the 15/16 chicane at the end of the swimming pool. After Rascasse, he is ahead. So Peter is right, it is not just the speed he carried through the chicane, although that did look spectacular. It was his cornering at Rascasse. I just watch Fernando and Max take that corner ten times in a row and it is absolutely magnificent.

Peter your analysis of Perez is spot on. In my opinion, the reason a lot of drivers can't compete with Max, Lewis, or Alonso is they try to drive like them instead of using their driving style which has gotten them to F1.
@powerboy247
@powerboy247 Жыл бұрын
This. You're not gonna Out-Max-Lewis-Alonso those three because they're at the top in their style of driving. Alonso for example loves understeer and can simply make it work even though cars which oversteer are theoretically quicker. Max and Lewis prefer oversteer in contrast. They won't ever beat Alonso trying the same things he does. Perez in my opinion just believed in his own hype a tad bit too much. Always blaming the car like in Australia and then in Miami. He tried to Verstappen that corner and lost the rear. Simple. Also he came in with way too much speed. If you observe Gasly slowed down as well as even he picked up on it and wanted to avoid any incidents with Perez.
@tmyersf4
@tmyersf4 Жыл бұрын
Thought it was unfair assessment of perez crash that it happened because he was trying to be faster than Max into the corner. I think when the alpine suddenly pulled off the racing line in the lead up to the corner it distracted him enough to cause him to misjudge his entry. Still a mistake of course but the narrative by Peter was just a cheap shot.

This is why I watch your videos… your depth of knowledge and insight provide so much information to us that otherwise we would never know. Your analysis of sector 3 was spot on - I saw a computer video where they overlayed Max’s and Alonso’s laps and it was exactly there that Max overtook him!

@@neilwilliams2883 I'm a Max fanboy but that's a bit of a stretch brother. Lewis, Alonso, George and Charles are right up there. Does max have the edge over them for now? Yes. But that can change very quickly from track to track especially if the others have a car that can compete with Redbull. Though if you would go by their junior karting records then yes Max is simply ahead of everyone if history is an indicator of the things to come.

So, has Max once again like last year managed to get some significant “pointy” front steering back into the RB19 front or has he adjusted his braking style into corners to allow the RB19 to rotate tighter thru key corners like Racasse? Thx for an amazing perspective of an amazing and unforgettable Monaco Q3! Bravo!

I clapped Max for a long time after THAT pole. It’s not something that I’m moved to often but THAT pole will be remembered for ever. Charles was slightly conservative in that evil Ferrari - he had to be to avoid damage - but was very close. Peter didn’t know of Charles 3 place drop to 6th. I can’t see him making progress in that Ferrari but you never know. Hope Fernando has a clean race and his relentless pace will stand him in good stead. Looks like no rain unfortunately.

@05:06 It surely gave him an edge, but the real reason he raged through S3 was, in his own words, that he kept an eye on his delta all the way.👴🤔 So coming out of S2 he saw the gap and immediately ['started to trow as many buckets of coal in the fire as possible and'(my words)] took all the "reasonable" risks in S3.😳 He touched every wall, some even quite hard in virtually every apex to have the straightest line as possible there.😨😳 That resulted in this mesmerising S3 and an unbelievably pole for him.😎

What an amazing qualifying session. I would happily watch 2 of those every time we go to Monaco! With the limited strategy options of the Monaco race I think it would be a wonderful weekend to have 2 shorter races, both with a mandatory pit stop. The only downside would be the lack of running for drivers to get settled and build confidence.

Hey Peter are you aware of the 3D lap recreations posted on formula addict and crashalong KZfaq channels. In particular formula addict who released a 3D comparison of Alonso and verstappens qualy laps. These seem to be quite accurate and because a tracing line is used a clearer understanding of the drivers specific line is shown quite well. The concept of shortening the corner upon entry is easily demonstrated when you see these tracing lines run simultaneously as the lap progresses.
