I also think Mertz feels too comfortable with Ricky , as he should be but we need to spread the wealth . When there are 2 other wide open guys he goes the safe route to Ricky

I am happy to see receivers getting separation. If he starts seeing the open receiver more often, we can do some things in the throwing game. That being said. I'm still happy with his consistency so far. Didn't have that at all last year

As always, great analysis James. Too many missed opportunities on offense that will come back to bite us against the better teams. How many cover zeros did we run the ball against? SMH

Certainly, from a bird's eye view consisting solely of the scoreboard and the "optics" around the offense, one would be frustrated with the team's performance Saturday night. I'm here to offer my two cents (not that it's worth much), and insert some reason into the discussion about this team. First, a caveat: there is no question that the red zone and 3rd & short conversion percentages should have been much higher, regardless of the situation. There is no debating that. However, some things to take into consideration: 1. The entire right side of the offensive line was suspended the first half due to the "fight" at the end of the Tennessee game. 2. Eguakun, our starting center, did not play at all during last night's game due to injury. 3. All signs are pointing to Mertz still dealing with his hand injury suffered during the Tennessee game. This is important for a few reasons: one being that while, yes, he was allowed to throw the ball during the first half, the playcalling was not particularly exotic, and allowing him to toss a few balls was likely done to give us as much of an edge as possible, knowing that at some point (as we saw in the second half) there would come a time pass plays would be off the table for him the rest of the way. So why leave him in the game? Well, for starters, it keeps the opponent on their toes. Just because he's handed the ball off the 9 previous plays, doesn't mean he isn't liable to take a shot on the 10th. Second, bringing in a backup (particularly the ones we have) opens up the possibility of a botched snap o handoff. Thirdly, and arguably most important, this allows Mertz to continue to stay on the field and command the offense because, yes, he himself is still learning. Do I think Napier is the second coming of Spurrier? Absolutely not. He's definitely had his share of questionable decision making previously, particularly in the playcalling and clock management departments. However, this is about the Charlotte game. And by in large, with the significant limitations we faced from within, I think he handled it well. While I remain skeptical of any coach who hasn't yet proven themselves, I think we need to cool it on the Napier/Offense slander. All things considered, with the exception of the Utah game, he and the offense have done a very respectable job so far. Here's to hoping Mertz is 100% next week and we get to see him let it fly versus Kentucky. Go Gators

When we didn't have three offensive Lineman suspended in the previous 16 games dating back to utah 2022, the same play calling and play design problems were evident in the film review. The film doesn't Lie, irregardless if offensive Lineman were suspended, injured, healthy. The mental gymnastics is strong with your take.

I still think our play-calling is questionable at times. That should not be. It's self-inflicted. Establishing the run is great in theory, but there are a number of times when we "should" be throwing.

@@weaponx2980offense is offense. It doesn't matter what school it is. Napier said he's gonna run a simple offense that's easy to learn and WORKS when it's executed. Looked pretty good against Tennessee 🤷🏻‍♂️ the point is to play safe offense that doesn't turn the ball over and can drain the clock when you get ahead. It worked PERFECTLY against Tennessee's high power offense

What’s crazy is this offense needs a dual threat qb. It’s so simple where you need to have someone who can take off when need be because of how simple the route combinations are. I’m cool with it but if we cans add a little more passing concepts than i think it can be unstoppable

It puzzles me to think that when reviewing film with the staff , that nobody on the staff sees the things that you point out that could have been better options on certain plays. And it seems like its the same issues every week. Wonder if things are pointed out but Billy refuses to make changes

I know our O is not great, but I was thinking could part of the issue in this game at least, be that Nape wanted to work on stuff? Meaning, he knew Mertz could carve up this defense, but that doesn't really help the team down the road, but making best out of a play call and/or learning ways to improve in game? It sounds like a stretch, but maybe?

I'm curious if CBN used better concepts at Louisiana when defenses were in cover zero, or cover one. If he did then he either knows he doesn't yet have better offensive personnel (namely OL, WR and/or QB) to run it, or he's holding back as much as possible until the big stretch coming up. (Sounds dumb I know) I'm trying to have faith that the passing game will change, but this is so frustrating to watch.

Love the breakdowns and last Saturday was very frustrating watching and seeing us not take advantage of them playing man on our WR'S and daring us to pass. My question is and what I hope is true, do you think Napier was trying not to show to much with Kentucky the next week? I want to think that rather than believe Billy is just that dysfunctional with play calling.

I’m only 10 minutes into the video so far, but I just wanted to comment that I feel James is going a little too heavy on the meta commentary (“passing offense bad”) on many of these plays, almost as if to put a negative spin on several of the successful plays Florida had early on. JMO of course, and I greatly appreciate these film reviews in general!

Our passing offense is bad lol. The scheme doesn’t work on this level which is why we hardly see WRs open with a chance to run after catch and to top it off, this the passing offense you show when you had a Wr recruit at the game that you’re trying to flip? 🤦🏾‍♂️

Dude that 3rd and 1 in the 1st with 5 min left has to be the worst playcall/design/decision in the entire game maybe all year. Take a look at the offensive line. The TE lines up at LT. You have 3 OL to the right power side. They are outnumbered on the left side of the ball and they still run the ball to the left side. Can't make this up.

Well, we ran a lot into 8-9 man boxes when we’d get them last year. Players were running into each other’s space or throwing lane last year. The coach has one top 50 passing finish ever with multiple 70 or worse. I’d say a decent amount isn’t Mertz. In before someone comes in with an opinion to argue the facts of the first 3 sentences.
