James, this is the most coherent and in depth breakdown of this game that I have heard/seen this past week. I learned a lot. The OL and blocking in general was bad and Mertz ran for his life too often in the game. I like that you suggested a one step drop to offset the loaded box and apparent rush. Seems pretty elementary to me to have something like this in your arsenal. The clock management needs major help. Plays taking too long to get in and then longer to execute at times. Where is the two-minute offense? I have been saying the same all along about the OC position. You either have the chops for it or not as a HC. Very few can do it at this level and even Jimbo Fisher relinquished the OC duties this year to Petrino. We cannot keep doing the same things over and over again expecting different results right? Let’s hope adjustments and changes are made to address the most glaring of shortcomings of this team after week one. I’d hate to think of the alternative. Well done brother. 👏🐊

I like Billy, he seems like a good dude and has a vision for what he wants to build, but he needs to start making some adjustments. He seems to know what they do poorly, but has never seemed to make any major adjustments to fix any of them. The defense looked better, but that's only one side of the ball and they were playing against 3rd/4th string QBs. The play-calling is still overcomplicated and headscratching. Not only that but they had zero urgency when down 3 scores as you pointed out. You had great analysis throughout and really showed how poorly this offense is ran. Special teams still looks bad even though there are two "game changers" coaches. Most college offenses have no problem dropping 25+ on a weekly basis. Especially with this many athletes this should be done. I think even if your young guys make massive strides this season, play-calling needs to improve. If this keeps up, the only thing going for him, his recruiting class, is going to start getting decommits. Ego and stubbornness has been the downfall of a lot of the Florida head coaches, and while I think Napier is the most humble, they should probably hire a OC by the end of the year if the whole season is like this, otherwise next year will be his last year.

Waited 9 months for team to take a step forward in year 2. Safe to say the incompetence made us look like this program is in week 2 instead of year 2. Might as well see how bad it was with this. Appreciate you & Go Gators!

You think Mertz could’ve helped his OL, specifically his RT, by not dropping back as deep? Know that throws timing off (pun) but playcaller has to see that. Did learn something, happy to finally find out what the officials signal for 2 players wearing same # 😑

@cgforuf
@cgforuf 11 ай бұрын
@@gavinplaizier7367 completely agree with your HC opinion. He’s a grizzled vet and has everyone thinking physical football when they think of Utah. That being said, that Utah team that was barely able to put up 24 on a Gator’s team that had a shockingly bad night was not a good football team. That’s not surprising. They were missing their QB one, his favorite target, the heart of their defense, and 4 other key pieces in the trenches. They’ll probably be pretty good when they get those pieces back but that team that shut down our “identity” as an offense, by only giving up 13 rushing yds, is about an 8 win team. Shows you how bad it got. I do like our WRs and thought we should attack their DBs but BN thought differently. I’m looking forward to Saturday! Looking forward to getting this taste out of our mouth. “Saturday arrives and it is again ruined by a failure to convert a 3rd & 7 because every receiver beyond the LoS ran 5y hitches.” Normal thoughts a Gator fan might have at random times in the day.

When Billy was hired, I went and watched quite a few of his Loiusiana games. I couldn't believe how unimpressed I was. I couldn't believe this offense was coming to Florida. Iowa wouldn't even run this offense. I swear, these coaches we bring in are plants from other schools. Muschamp from Georgia, McElwain from Alabama, Mullen from Miss St and now Billy with ties back to Alabama again. Can't we find someone that gets and understands Florida football and actually wants to use the best high school athletes in the country in the right way at the collegiate level? We are screwed.

I might have misunderstood your point surrounding the "mesh" concept bringing no options ( 19:39- 20:00). Mesh is run by basically every High school, College and NFL team throughout the country, and is a pretty effective play. The mesh itself almost always has the deep sit/spot ("curl" you called it) paired with a wheel route, same as Napier runs it. You are right that it's not a fantastic 3rd and long play, but there aren't a ton of options for 3rd and 12 (as you also pointed out).
@TheGatorNationFootballPodcast
@TheGatorNationFootballPodcast 11 ай бұрын
I love me some mesh, I am an air raid guy! Assuming the defense is playing correctly, there is only one route that is capable of getting the first down,l and it's going to present a tiny window rather late. Therefore, on 3rd 12, it's suboptimal to me given how utah was playing and the issues that UF has with the O-line.

Tennessee fan here. Great video. Obviously, this offense is nothing like the Fun 'n Gun which torched us repeatedly. While watching your excellent analysis, I kept thinking that perhaps the route concepts intentionally put receivers somewhat near each other to simplify the reads for a QB playing his first game in the system. Or, are these the same concepts that BN used at UL? As I watched the game live, I was just shocked the offense had no sense of urgency throughout the second half. I repeatedly said to my wife "What are they doing?".

My takeaways from this game 1. The O Line Needs Work 2. Mertz needs to look at others not only pearsall 3. We need better awareness from the RB to go upfield a little for more yardage 4. Mertz needs to throw better check downs passes to lead them forward then a flat pass where he has to start running

On the illegal formation Burke can be on the line of scrimmage as well as Khalil it would just mean Khalil would not be an eligible receiver he can still run a route he just can’t catch a pass a lot of offense run these type of sets to get better numbers in the box while still being able to run differ power schemes with their tight ends

They should get better as they get to analyze this same tape and get more experience in games. At least I hope they do. I don't know if I can take another losing season. Remember when our most common complaint was the Grantham defense? It seems to have flipped. We are struggling with Napier's nonsensical offense. He did not change much from his time at Louisiana, right? How did he win two conference titles there with this offense?

Unfortunately too many of you are forgetting the most important comments in the breakdown -- the opinions expressed in the film breakdown are from a self-admitted hobbyist. He knows a lot of football -- light years beyond a casual fan -- and good for him. He does a great job with presentation and communication, not unexpected given his profession and professional experience. Unfortunately he is not an actual football coach and despite his knowledge has some serious blind spots. I have liked your show GNFP, despite some blind spots being readily apparent at times, but you apparently don't see what you don't know and are now doing the Gator Nation itself a disservice with some of your opinions and in saying Billy Napier cannot succeed as offensive coordinator. It is more than slightly impudent rendering such a bold black and white opinion of a football coach who has worked his way up the ranks under the likes of Swinney and Saban. Monday morning quarterbacking from a fan is one thing, but have crossed a line you shouldn't have crossed with your opinions expressed here. You have a gift of communication and convince a lot of people, so you should be careful not to misuse it especially when doing so harms something which is apparently very important to you.

As you said (thank you for saying it), I attempt to ensure that people know that I am sharing my opinions, which are not fact or the end be all. As an analyst, hobby or otherwise, I share my authentic opinions and conclusions, but no one has to believe them, the viewers and listeners are free to chose with how they interact with the info. When I am wrong, I attempt to readily say so, I also never say anything just to stir the pot. If I say it, I believe it, but what I believe isn't always right of course! At the end of the day, I just love football and I enjoy analyzing it. My thoughts are my own.
@stevenwingo8348

@@TheGatorNationFootballPodcast You have a gift for communication when you are in front of an audience and that results in a real problem here. I can relate -- because I have that same gift too and it has benefitted me greatly in many endeavors. But I've also learned through some tough lessons that you need to give great respect to such a gift and not treat it lightly. Although you caution your viewers and listeners that what you express is your opinion and point out you don't have all the info the coaches have, much of your audience eats up every last thing you say and takes it as superior analysis and opinion, a very reliable opinion on Napier's performance and what is right or wrong in our program, what needs to be changed and what doesn't, and so on. They take your opinion and make it theirs and they go express that opinion on message boards and I presume to fellow fans they know in other ways. In many instances, your opinions appear to be good ones, credible, and I agree with a lot of them. But when you run into blind spots, the vast majority of your viewers and listeners can't spot them They take what you say as gospel and are lining up as if following a pied piper -- one who is telling them Napier's offense can't work. But in the incredibly complex world of football and the myriad of offenses and defenses and offshoots and variations of them, nobody understands it all. You should know that. No single coach does and certainly not a fan who does this in their spare time and isn't actually running a collegiate or professional offense or even a successful high school offense -- no matter how high you are on the pecking order in terms of fans with a high level of knowledge and understanding of the game. I would suggest you wield the sword you hold very carefully here. When you start rendering opinions publicly criticizing a coach to such an extent that you are essentially calling for him to step aside as offensive coordinator, that is how you are now using your gift -- as a sword. I suggest you do so only with the highest level of prudence. Because you are making a real impact on the fan opinion, in a negative way, of a very successful coach who earned this job by working his way up, has done tons of good since he arrived, and whose only full cycle recruiting class are still true freshman. Do you really want to be the pied piper trying to force changes on a coach who has had 1 year and 1 game to repair a broken program? Maybe a little more restraint would suit your own interests, and those of your team, a little better instead of being quite so certain in opinion portion of your commentary.

If we do decently well this season, say 7-5. 8-4, Billy will not hire an OC. He'll think that the players are getting developed and adjusting to his scheme. Especially if we out gain our opponents in yards. Thats going to be a hard sell, because of the success he had at ULL while he was HC and OC there. I wonder if Billy asks or takes suggestions from the other coaches in reference to play design.

I think he should at least think about giving that title to the TE coach who has ran a dangerous offense at Samford. That way he wouldn't have to let go of any other on field staff such as a line coach bc our line clearly needs all the help they can get. Although I dnt think those two r pulling their weight in recruiting quite yet anyway. I do however think he should still work w the qbs ,he has done a good job w mertz imo and that was a big reason lagway chose UF so wouldn't want to jeopardize that

Billy is the smartest guy in the room. His process is Laid out in his famous notebook. He don't need no stinking quick game. He don't need no two minute offense. He don't need to scheme optimal passing concepts to help the offense. He don't need to coach up special teams. He don't need to manage the clock. he don't need to signal in offensive plays sooner. He don't need to adjust his process because the process helped him win the sun belt championship.

So Napier needs a mobile QB for his offense to work? Lagway can't get here quick enough!!!

He needs a better designed passing offense, imo.

Meets keying on Ricky and defenses know it. He doesn’t have a good feel of the offense. They ran the bunch and it was not effective.

Please send this film to napier!! Because whoever is reviewing the film isn’t getting the message or napier is doing what he wants. Same crap from last year.

I do not enjoy Florida football under Napier. I think he is an outstanding recruiter, but a poor offensive coach. He ignores special teams, causing constant problems. He needs to have an offensive coordinator and a dedicated special teams coach. If he doesn't remedy these areas, his recruits will go elsewhere. Also, Florida seems to play its worst against teams that go into games with multiple players out or otherwise hurting. They seem to get healthy against Florida. Still, I enjoy your breakdowns.

I couldn't even finish the video. I knew his play calling was complete dog sh*t but to have broken down in slow motion is just embarrassing. If he doesn't hire an OC at the end of the season, he won't get a 4th year.

Maaaaan this offense sucks...We have talent he doesn't get the most of his guys on offense. The offensive line is atrocious, bright spot Knijeah Harris had good game
