We need more of these "real World" affordable bikes, especially to attract new riders. Well done Honda ! ! Exotica and over 200 bhp is nice, however, reserved for the more fortunate among is. Which is fine for the lucky minority and I wish them well, but it's great and a brave move from one of the best brands in motorcycling.

Speaking for myself I have zero interest in 200 bhp 200 mph, $20,000+ motorcycles. I drive in the real world where I seldom, if ever, go faster than 100 mph. This motorcycle is much more than what I will ever need, or even be likely to use, but that doesn't mean I don't want it. I am inclined though to think that this is a lot for a new rider. I think both Suzuki and Honda could really use scaled-down versions of these new bikes in the 400 cc class, and those could be better choices, (but still plenty exciting) for new riders.

Unless the intent is to take a 200hp sportsbike to the track, which most don't, it's just a massive waste to buy for public roads. And if someone is going to squid on a machine like that they deserve to be behind bars.

Great review, Toad! Pretty outstanding bike. Like a lot of Honda product, the design is mature and more subtle, which will keep it fresh much longer than the confused mech look on so many bikes in this category. The tires (and gas mileage) should've been mentioned, surely contributing to the overall riding experience. I have two bikes with MR5s in them, and they are incredibly good in all conditions (and last long!). And the narrower rear tire was - so Honda-like - deemed to be a better choice for handling, testosterone inclinations be damned. Good for Honda! When this is benched against its awesome competitors, including the new 8S, it will be interesting to see where it lands. It'll probably come down to what kind of riding YOU like. How awesome is that for us?!
@simonhancocks9094

Because of the nature of the launch, you ride flat out and don't get to re-fuel them yourself, we can only go by the dash fir economy. I was around 45mpg by the end of the day. We'll wait for a UK road test for a more comprehensive figure.

It doesn't look a patch on the f6 05-06 model. The one flashed up in the graphic sketch. That didn't have a retro vibe, so much as look traditional with a twist. Imo the angularity, especially the headlight, looks cheap. All these modern angular bikes look a bit too anorexic, but when you see an f6 it looks squat, staunch, and perfectly proportion. Ultimately beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it's the biggest turn-off on this bike for me.

Same for me with the f6 Hornet, I so seriously wish they'd produced the 900 with the 600's styling for that year. Slightly unround headlight, lovely dash, exhaust that fills that void between fat 180-section rear tyre and seat unit, and Australian forks. It's the quintessential modern classic bike for me, in the looks department, and not some anorexic cheek boned cheap mess they turned the Hornet into in '07. The IL4 was a peach too, no IL2 is ever gonna be a substitute, regardless of crank.

What about the quirky protrusion in the middle of the oil pan? I’ve noticed that on previous Honda engines but protected by frame rails rather than just exhaust pipes. My Yamaha XSR700 has already kicked up a rock and broken it’s flat oil pan in 18K so it can happen. And if it’s noticeably vulnerable on the Hornet is it a great idea on the TransAlp? I’m thinking not 🤔

@martymiller4300

Like my Yamaha, both the Hornet and the TransAlp have no attachment point on the frame lower than the centerline of the engine. By the time you build a bash plate big enough to reach a solid mounting point you’ve got a coal bucket. An ounce of good original design (flat pan) could save several pounds of cure.

Was sitting on this new hornet and new yamaha mt07 and new suzuki 8S at NEC motorshow in UK and I'm 175cm (5.7ft) and I feel most comfortable on hornet. What I would like is that rear tyre is like on yamaha (would be much better looking) and that front forks and frame on yellow bike is in red colour (same like on black and white bike) or just front forks in black like the frame...that silver front forks don't suits me on yellow bike...and to be honest that yellow color in person is waaay better looking than black and white for me.

Looks fun, reasonable value too. Unfortunately at just over 6ft that seat height is too low, and the pegs are way too high for me so the resultant leg bend isn't compatible with my 50 something knees and back. Shame. @garavonhoiwkenzoiber Жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-dj7fh modern engines with strict emissions turn off fuel completely when you let off the throttle. This causes the bike to dive forward, (more noticeable on engines with high engine braking) and then when you reapply the throttle, jerks the bike forward. In low speed situations when you're on/off/on/off throttle this is a pain. Disabling decel fuel cutoff lets you use a small amount of fuel to idle the engine. Makes low speed and transitional maneuvers better

This is correct for a lot of bikes. Definitely with the Yamaha MT09 and MT03 / R3. I had it disabled on my MT09 and it made the on/off transition much smoother. Not quite as smooth as a carb'd bike, but close enough. On my R3 it would have been a waste of money on a cheap bike to pay several hundred for a flash so I lived with it until it annoyed me so much I sold the bike. I am 6 feet tall, inside leg 34 in and ride a cb500f ( which I now call a mini Hornet ), very comfortably - I was considering upgrading to the Hornet but having just sat on one at Motorcycle live at th NEC , I would find it cramped - my foot was constantly on the rear brake, so unfortunately it won't be for me - I'm gutted plus the headlight is just so ugly and cheap

I've actually got a cb500f which looks almost identical and I can tell you that it's defo not cheap feeling. And still looks spanking despite being a design from 2016 I do agree with it needing a fatter rear tire tho. If you got a new one with the ups forks, other than the 160 rear tire you have pretty much bike which looks like a big bike.

@@nigelfisher3756 possibly so, but how much is the quickshifter to buy for the Honda - probably a good few hundred quid. I can almost rule the Honda out now based on the ergos alone. Another reviewer said the MT-07 has more low rpm torque, and the Hornet has more top end power, 72 compared to 90 horsepower. Ideally test ride both, along with a similar Suzuki and Kawasaki, and maybe something slower like a 650 Royal Enfield, and an Indian Scout to see if you like heavier but with a V-twin sound and more 1940s styling. To me the least expensive Harley is crazy for what you get, but others disagree.
