Drove the 2023 CR-V Hybrid Sport (same color and all in your video) this past weekend. And I have to say, I really liked it. We drove 60% mixed City, and 40% Highway/interstate and yielded 40 MPG for a 12 mile or more loop. I know that the MPG will go up as the battery charges more on longer trips. It never really hit half way charge on our drive. I really like the quietness of the CR-V over the Accord Hybrid, never really heard the engine during the drive. I was amazed by how quick the CR-V felt in comparison to the tad pepper 10th gen Accord Hybrid. I would daily drive either no issues. I never felt like the CR-V struggled to get going like you usually feel with SUV's of that size with a smaller engine. But If I had to choose the 2023 CR-V Sport felt better and the fit and finish on it won me over. Now I have to figure out if I want to pay the extra $6k for the Touring edition. Honda is going to sell a ton of these new CR-V's. I would have never bought the older style, just didn't look like a grown up car to me. So glad they choose the design they did, to me the front of the CR-V is way more aggressive looking then in the past generations.

@@s3er0i9ngWhat do you mean the CR-V has no transmission? It’s advertised as E-CVT, just like RAV4 is. Not saying you don’t know something I don’t, but what you’ve said is contrary to what I understand. Can you explain it more?
@mr.anonymous3103

@@williamfrench9973they advertise is as an ecvt because it behaves like one. But it does not have a transmission at all. Rather a clutch that disconnects and connects two direct drive “shafts” when the car needs to. Under 43mph the car is basically using the electric motor while the engine charges the battery. After that point it connects the other shaft and the engine is driving it instead with the battery as support.
@mr.anonymous3103
@mr.anonymous3103 8 ай бұрын
Actually, the Honda actually has a better more efficient system. For starters, the gas engine can charge the battery while the electric motor propels the car, something the Toyota can’t do. And on top of that, there is no transmission. Meaning you have a car that’s going to be more reliable with the lack of a transmission that could be costly to replace. Please do your homework or research/drive the cars without talking nonsense about something you know nothing about. Your opinion is not a fact.

Hi Ben, I enjoyed your video Rav4 hybrid vs the CR-V hybrid. Ironically, today I took a test drive of the Cr-V and my passenger was the sales manager of our local dealership. The interior of this vehicle is very high end but unfortunately Honda only outfits its hybrid on the Touring edition (which is pretty loaded). My one question was the battery warranty. His response was 7 years compared to 10 years for Toyota. On tat note there are more options with Toyota compared to Honda. My choice is simple, TOYOTA by a mile.

Kind of depends on what you like. The XSE has a great sporty look. The limited looks more refined/upscale. The price difference for me is negligible since if I got the XSE I would add the advanced tech, weather package, and premium auto (which all come standard with Limited) and that adds $3k to the base price. I also prefer the all softex seats of the limited to the XSE seats which are softex with fabric panels (which look really cool, but might not wear as well). Anyway for me, I think its a tough choice.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the CRV's orange stitching? If y'all like it, then I'm happy to concede that Honda made the right call. I don't care for it, and you can't buy a CRV hybrid without it. The RAV4's white stitching on black is more neutral. The CRV comes with a remote engine starter, controlled by the standard keyfob. With the Rav4 and most other cars, it's an expensive add-on (at the dealer or aftermarket) and you need a second keyfob to control it. Two keyfobs on one keychain is a bit annoying. Everyone has their preference, but both vehicles are pretty great and I'm happy we can each choose the one we like the best. One last note: this is the first year of the current CRV and the fifth year of the current RAV4. This is relevant because a manufacturer adds minor refinements or freshening each year after a new generation is introduced. The current RAV4 has a lot of nice refinements over the 2019 model, though it will be replaced in a year or two by the next generation RAV4. The current CRV is brand new and will get refinements over the next few years - possibly including fog lights, heated rear seats, vented front seats, a panoramic moon roof, a higher-resolution rear-view camera, and maybe some more interior colorways. Most manufacturers withholds some of the goodies during the first year of a new generation, so they try to maintain interest as the generation ages. I'm writing this in late June 2023. If you want the CRV, it might be worthwhile to wait a few months. The 2023 CRV has been out around 10 months, and the 2024 model is likely just a few months away. Maybe the '24 model will add some feature you really want. Also, dealers will give you a better price on '23s when the '24s start showing up on their lots.

I’m assuming that the CRV is then the Sport Touring (also highest) but you don’t say and I couldn’t read the back badge. Many of the features that you call out are specific to those trim levels - so people might be confused if they go look at a lower trim level. Great comparison otherwise.

I feel overall the Rav4 edges out the CR-V but what might push me toward the CR-V is Toyota's games and refusal to send enough of the NINE MILLION vehicles they produced in the 12 month period that just ended. They shattered their all time record yet they won't send enough vehicles to their LARGEST market. All of this is an intentional business decision to get more money for less cars. However, it's not sustainable. They are alienating loyal customers and missing out on new ones, all the while pissing off dealers who can't get enough inventory (not that I'll have sympathy for dealers ever again). It's time for everyone to talk about this out loud so they know we're not stupid. It's also time for people to stop paying over msrp via add ons. In fact we need to let the few units they decide to sprinkle on the US rot on the lot so they'll have to go back to incentives and below MSRP pricing. Enough is enough and we're our own worst enemies by continuing to buy. We're also hurting ourselves financially which anyone who overpayed in the past 2 years will realize when the time to trade comes around. The dealers and manufacturers are gorging on our money and ignorance now but there will be nobody left to buy for a long time to come.

@williamfrench9973

I think this is grossly overstated. North America (~24%) is not their largest market - that would be Asia (~32%). For the first half of ‘23, they sold just over 1 million vehicles in the US, down from all time high level, but not significantly. What we are seeing (after post pandemic shortages and record high markups) is exaggerated demand for perceived “high value” and high resale value brands (and Toyota is the king of that segment). Still, in just the 6 months I’ve been shopping around, I’ve noticed their inventory levels have gone up dramatically (although we are seeing levels dip right now as they do their model year change-overs which interrupts production lines). There is a lot of content on YT right now that supports your talking points (particularly a certain father/son duo who are 100% verifiably full of crap) - but every time I research what they are saying, I find it is vastly exaggerated. I feel that perhaps you’ve seen some of this content and been lead to false conclusions. Do yourself a favor and use the “Search Inventory” option on Toyota’s website and see what you can find. Perhaps things are truly dire in your area - but they are looking better everyday in mine.

I am deciding between the two hybrids. Hybrid concept is great and similar between them. NiMetalHydride vs LiHydride-not sure which is better. Both problem in cost if they need to be replaced. After 3 year lease probably not a problem since batteries will still be OK. Not sure after 5 years and 100,000 miles. Dimensions between them a wash as well. Since I cover all seats the interior look not major (I have a dog so everything needs to be covered). I am one of those still missing the Element-imagine a hybrid element in 2025-lets hope. So, both CRV Hybrid and Rav4 Hybrid a wash for me.

I owned an Element for many years and loved it too. Sadly the rumors of the Element being brought back are fake news (probably based on wishful thinking). As for the battery issues you cite, Toyota gives 10 year/150k mile warranty. Toyota has sold over 2.5 million hybrids over the last 20+ years, many older Prius owners report original battery still working after 200k miles. My research shows that a replacement battery (Toyota oem) costs $3500-4000, which is in the range of what a replacement transmission or engine might run you. I want to like the CRV as much as the RAV4 but a couple of things put the RAV4 ahead for me: the AWD implantation on RAV4 is superior, and the CRV using a Turbo which means higher maintenance and shorter engine life.

As an overall package i would choose the CR-V. Better looking interior, More practical, drives better, better sound system and better NVH. They both have the same acceleration and same fuel economy in the city but the CR-V has a better AWD system which is why it does way worse in terms of fuel efficiency on the highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, don’t get a CR-V hybrid. If you live in a state where they salt the roads, don’t get a RAV4 Hybrid or Prime, look into cable gate, the rear motor high voltage connector collects salt and water which causes corrosion after a few years. I was going to pull the trigger on a RAV4 Hybrid before finding out about this issue, it’s a $5,000 repair that’s not covered if you’re over 36k miles.
@williamfrench9973
@williamfrench9973 9 ай бұрын
Why do you feel the CR-V’s AWD system is superior? Most reviewers I’ve read prefer the Ravs. Also “cable gate” is old news. They fixed the issue for model years 22 forward and have for a long time now, been repairing free of charge earlier vehicles that suffered from this problem.
@Fadic4

@@williamfrench9973 The CR-V hybrid has a mechanical AWD system that can send more power to the back vs the weak electric motor that’s in the RAV4 hybrid, there is videos showing how bad the e-AWD is. Check out driving sports TV or TFL, they did a roller test with the 2020 CR-V Hybrid(last gen) vs RAV4 hybrid, the new generation CR-V can send more power to the back but the RAV4 is the same as the 2020 since it hasn’t been updated yet, 2025 will be a brand new model so we will see improvements. The cable corrosion issue is not fixed at all, they simply cut open the side of the connector but salt/water can still get in there and cause it to corrode, it will take longer to happen, but it will still happen. They only repaired it free of charge if you were within the 36k mile warranty, if you were past that, it was a $6,500+ repair bill, Toyota kept sweeping it under the rug until a class action lawsuit was filed against them in Canada which resulted in the extended warranty for the 2019-22 models. Why was there a class action lawsuit against Toyota if they were fixing this issue out of the kindness of their heart as you alluded to? Also, the 2023 models have the same exact connector as the 2022 models but only the 2019-22 models are covered by the extended warranty, how does that make sense?

And the list of differences go on and on. So getting back to what you were saying, reading things like motortrend and other articles that show which one they like better is only good as a starter. I have read many articles in the past and I thought I was dead set on a Toyota Sienna last year and then I got in it and damn, that huge overimposing center console was so claustrophobic and it annoyed the hell out of me. I felt like I was in a pocket and the front roominess was cut down for me. So back to the drawing board at that time. Sienna Hybrid is a great vehicle, the only minivan with a hybrid and AWD that gets that great MPG. But the bottom line is when you drove the CRV and found that it drove better, that means that no article in the world is going to have you pick another car when you drove one that you favored no matter what someone says and I agree with that. I like mangos more than apples and there is no one that is going to somehow convince me that I like apples more. Wants and needs is what it comes down to.

Several Toyota models are dropping in reliability ratings from Consumer reports. Multiple owners are uploading videos of Toyota engines failing (especially the new Tundras), that whole reliability thing is a myth in 2020s. Just keep with your maintenance and your car will take care of you.

Ben: you know better than to say the RAV4 has more power...yes the RAV4 has more HP...but the CRV has much more torque, and the torque comes In sooner: the winner when it comes to real POWER is the CRV Hybrid due to it's stronger instant torque. If you drive both, the Honda is the clearly better driver with stronger acceleration. Totally disagree that the Toyota gauges look better...Honda steering wheel and gauge looks better and reads better...toyota looks cheaper and busier. - Honda, Honda, Honda - BTW: my last new car was a Toyota, and I like Toyotas in general...but this CRV is vastly superior to the RAV4

The CRV superior. 😅. That’s funny. Why? Does it have 50 more horsepower? Does it get 10 mph better gas mileage? Maybe a little more storage? Calling a Honda superior over a Toyota is hilarious. That’s like saying a Volkswagen is superior to a Mercedes.

But what you stated is just what the so called "car enthusiast" wants. Most car consumer is utilitarian and just wants "AWD" that is kinda good with gazillions MPG world class leading, which what RAV4 is all about! And due to that, RAV 4 is better vehicle and class leading in its sales, they can't make it enough to supply demands!

The CRV hybrid is better for city driving being more fuel efficient. It's faster from 0 to 60 than the RAV4 and has a better ride. It has better tech, nicer cabin and more spacious. Both hybrid systems have been proven reliable. I expect the CRV hybrid will be ranked above the RAV4 hybrid by KBB, Car and Driver, CR, Edmunds, Motor Trend, and others.

I just bought CR-V hybrid, but I don't think your prediction will come true! Because let's face it, Hybrid means you need to squeeze that MPG as high number as possible, RAV4 can get high 40s where CRV hybrid struggling to even closing 40 MPG in AWD. It doesn't matter city driving or highway driving, I find RAV4 is just those modern utilitarian SUV that works and excel in things that matters the most in Hybrid system, where CRV that I bought is good all-around, but really never perfect in anything
@williamfrench9973

RAV4 is faster 0-60 than CR-V (7.1seconds vs 7.6seconds). Your mpg numbers are off too when you consider that only the FWD CRV gets slightly better than RAV4 AWD (no FWD RAV4 Hybrid is offered). AWD to AWD RAV4 edges out CRV on estimated mpg. Somewhat more into subjective territory, I disagree with your assessment that the CR-V has better tech. I personally prefer the rugged/utilitarian look of rav4 over CRV, but the CRV is damn nice and I could see how some might prefer it. We’ll see on the reviews. Motortrend like the RAV4 hybrid slightly more, but literally every comparison article I’ve read has the two in a virtual toss up. It sounds like you’ve settled on CRV and I doubt you’ll be disappointed - Honda’s are great. But I think you’re trying to portray a slam-dunk that simply does not exist (outside of your particular tastes).
