This year we decided to get 2 Carniolan and 2 Italian packages of bees so that we could compare side by side how they did. Watch and see the results.
We also use Autoframes, and I have some tips to help you with your harvest with these types of frames.

Awesome video! I love your setup. I have just finished watching all of your bee related videos and I’ve subscribed. Looking forward to more. I noticed that you’ve got two different styles of roofs and your supers are also a different design. Did you build your own and if you are on FB group where I can see more images of videos of your hives . Are you going to do things differently this coming winter season?

Thank you, I do have a Facebook page Tina's Hide Away LLC. I have 2 different style roofs because when I bought my first 2 autoframes I bought the whole hive kit. Then I found some good deals on bottom boards, hi e boxes etc so when I bought more autoframes I just bought the frames.....no boxes. My husband cut the parts of the box that we need to pull off to harvest. Since these are autoframes any traditional hive component will fit. It's a little easier to buy the traditional sized parts.

Cool. If I had open jars like that I would have thousands of yellow jackets in 15 minutes.

Typically when I first start a jar will only be out there for a couple minutes. It's when we get towards the end things slow down

@tinashideaway ibe filled up a dozen 2 liter Mtn Dew bottles with yellow jackets the last few weeks and they keep on coming. They are great for cleaning out wet supers however.😄

Are those the original flow hive or clones? Where did you take it? Thanks
@tinashideaway
@tinashideaway 11 ай бұрын
These are the knock off from the flow hive. Much cheaper and I've been using them for 3 years now with no issues. I like that they fit on the traditional sized bee boxes. In winter I pull them and put them in totes until next year

Is that a normal yield in your area? I would expect 250-280 lbs from each of my carnica colonies so I would be very disappointed if I got less than 100lbs/colony. I'm also suprised to hear you say your carnica were more aggressive than the Italians. They are usually very calm and easy to handle. In fact, I would re-queen anything that produced yellow workers as I find them very aggressive. Did you buy your queen as part of your package or did you get her from a carnica breeder? I suspect she may actually be a cross (if you see any yellow abdomens, that would confirm it).

This is actually my best yield so far. We are in Northern Wisconsin so our season is much shorter. I didn't get a chance to pull the frames until a week later and there is some weight to them so I think I will get some more honey from those. All my hives this year were new packages in spring and due to a snowstorm in April (18") the bees arrived late this year. I agree with you, they shouldn't be so aggressive....part of that may have been my fault. I keep my bees at our property that we only can go to on the weekends. So I don't always have a choice of when I can work with the bees. One time it was the day/night after rain, the other time it was 99 degrees and hot out. (Not normal for this area) If they continue to be aggressive in spring I plan on requeening.

@tinashideaway I would not be so tolerant. It is precisely because I can't always inspect my colonies when the weather is perfect that I don't tolerate aggression. It would limit when I could get any work done and allow drones from aggressive queens to mate with any virgin queens in the area. This would be a much bigger (and longer term) problem than confronting the problem early. I suspect (from what you said) that the colonies may not be pure carnica (or not mated in isolation from other bees) as carnica are usually very easy to handle.
@tinashideaway
@tinashideaway 10 ай бұрын
That is possible. They were very aggressive again today. But to be honest I'm not sure if there is much that I can do this year anymore???
@ApiaryManager
@ApiaryManager 10 ай бұрын
@@tinashideaway A good breeder will usualy take orders a year in advance so it may be too late to requeen this year. You may be lucky but I prefer to identify any colonies that I don't want to take into winter and get them re-queened asap (ideally before July/August as there is little opportunity to correct problems after this). The "old queens" workers can live out their lives supporting the "new queen" (from selected stock) and helping her set up her winter nest. They will be long gone by Spring so any workers you see will be daughters of your new queen and any behavioural problems should be fixed.

@@tinashideaway because it is SO inefficient. I can pull, grade and pack 120 lbs out of an 8 frame extractor in like 2hrs. You have to pluck out wasps... So many new beekeepers fall for this novel waste. I don't think it is hood for the bees, or the culture. Most respect though for producing this video. Ditch those flo supers and comment back how much better next season is.

Another video promoting a knock off flow hive and misrepresenting her bees. You have mutts. Not Italian or carniolan.
@tinashideaway
@tinashideaway 10 ай бұрын
I'm not promoting the knock off verses the original flow hive. I've never owned the original flow hive so I can't make a comparison. This is just what I choose to use. I did buy my bees from a VERY reputable bee supplier! I'm sorry you feel like I'm misrepresenting my bees. All this is meant to be is a comparison between the 2 breeds that have an identical set up and location.
