I take a close look at the Marin Muirwoods, a cromolly commuter bike that is very capable and well designed to get you to work, school or the grocery store: but it has some secrets that make it capable of so much more.
The Muirwoods sits in a category of commuter bikes that bikes like the Kona Dew and Kona Dew Plus seem sort of similar. Upon inspection of components and some details, the Muirwoods has more to offer though than just a rigid commuter with kind of a cool retro simple aesthetic. What comes to mind is the Surly Grappler but in a budget friendly package. The Surly has garnered a lot of attention and instagram is full of different ways that people have built their Grappler. What those people with Grapplers probably don't know is that the Muirwoods even exists, and that it is maybe an even more compelling inspiration for really cool custom builds
The inspiration to upgrade this bike comes from 3 major factors: Cromolly: It is no coincidence that steel rhymes with real. Geometry: Outside the box thinking with inspiration from Mountain and Overlander bikes brings us a bike that could be swayed towards being a gravel bike, simple commuter or being more like an SUV with the ability to go offroad and carry your luggage. Tire Clearance: lastly, with MEGA tires clearance the ability to morph this bike into something else is welcome in a world where not many bikes basically invite you to put tires on with double the width of the stock tires.
Specs for the bike include cromo frame and fork, Microshift AdventX 10 speed drivetrain with 11-51 cassette mated to a 38t narrow/wide steel chainring. Braking is provided by basic Tektro Hydrualic Disc Brakes and 160mm rotors.

Great bike! With my 2010 Muirwoods I crossed USA from coast to coast, also traveled across Italy/Austria, rode on multi day gravel roads in Oregon.....and many more. Never had a problem. I changed parts during the years for sure but it is part of the normal maintenance of a bike.

Thanks for the in depth overview, with mostly positive, and one or two negatives observations. I'm considering the Muirwoods, vs a similar aluminium type hybrid. Although the Muirwoods is a little harder to locate in Europe. I've never had an issue with rust on my steel framed bicycles. Just keep it in the garage [out of the weather] when not in use, take care of any scratches, and keep a coat of polish on the metal.

Hi, I feel we need to mention it because for some hardcore Canadian commuters bikes suffer from corrosion due to the strange salts they put on the roads in winter. We've seen suspension forks with such severe corrosion that the uppers and lowers seize with very severe pitting on the alloy stanchions and front derailleurs completely seizing, so I just want to be cautious to warn those types of people. Frames often get badly scratched up from locks and storage racks for commuters resulting in rust, and even people who ride in slush a lot having bikes potentially rust from the inside.. mostly it is aesthetic and just wanting to remind people of that difference compared to aluminum.

Great review! Are these cup and cone “formula style” hubs? This looks like a great commuter. It would make an excellent base for a gravel/bike packing rig. I’d probably set this up as a singlespeed MTB (with a tensioner), and add a Ritchey Kyote alt bar. I’m glad that Marin spec’d these components, which have been solid performers for me.

Just picked up the 2023 Muirwoods as a go-to knock around bike etc (too far from work to commute with it, unfortunately). It was a demo model so I got it at a great discount--enuf that made passing it up impossible., despite the quick release...which I treat as the reason for the discount. 🤣 Lovin on it as is. It's a great looking bike and I'm a steel bike fan (have several). Ride feel on quality steel frames converted me. Other than throwing on a good saddle, grips, and tires, I'll run it stock until it's time to upgrade the drive train. Seems to me that microshift components & tekro brakes are pretty good quality and offer bang for the buck.

Update.. my (72yo) wife was riding it just a few weeks after purchase and was T-boned by a car at an intersection. She was hurt but nothing broken except helmet. Car ran over the back wheel so back wheel was tacoed, derailleur smashed, derailleur hanger bent. Hanger is integral to the frame so there was some nervousness about straightening it, but being steel it was ok. Substitute wheel has a smidgeon more freewheel noise but otherwise bike feels the same and we are both riding it again. Don’t recommend the experience but I think we can say the bike is sturdy.

I appreciate the material description. I've seen materials listed as "6061 chromoly" which doesn't even make sense. That and just "alloy" which describes virtually all metal frames. For all the engineering worship in bikes, a lot of buyers really don't care about actually knowing whats going on.

Steel frame is more realistic bike packing so if you break a frame far away likely hood of someone welding the frame is huge. If you brake aluminum low chance of finding someone with a tig welder or spool gun welder. The steel you could tig, stick arc, wire feed and so forth. Nice looking rig thanks for your reviews. I have a boost bike Riftzone 3. But since everyone smashes 135 qr9 don’t if your bike packing likely hood of finding that wheel is huge. If you destroy any part of it you could get one off a Walmart bike something old from 30 years ago may not be disk hub or “29” but you won’t be stranded.
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop Жыл бұрын
those are great points! and even if someone did find a welder able to look after aluminum, the overall strength of a rewelded alloy frame is greatly reduced because post-welding heat treatment is a critical factor in aluminum frame strength (heat treatment triples the strength of some aluminum alloys if I remember correctly).

Hi Graham, really good review. Appreciate the reviews of more affordable bikes, which are quite hard to find. How would you compare it to something like a kona dr dew (obvs that bike is 650b)?
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop Жыл бұрын
Hi, I am a fan of Kona's bikes - many of their non-traditional category bikes seem to have similarities with what Marin does. This is another example. The Kona seems to me like a very similar concept - only a notch up in price and in spec (noticing the thru-axles immediately as a take a peak on Kona's website, then the cranks and drivetrain). I would consider the Kona a great option if a buyer has a higher budget and appreciates the spec improvement. I don't think the wheel size difference would necessarily push or pull my decision, the Marin's geometry is more progressive but for many it may not be a difference they'd care about. Overall, I think the Dr Dew looks great, it would be the buyer's budget that would play a big role in the decision as the Marin would offer a very similar experience for a fairly significant savings.

Great review, thanks! How would you say the Muirwoods compares to the Surly Preamble in terms of geometry, components, comfort, value, etc? Both have the exact same MSRP ($899) here in the States. I'm a casual rider looking for a simple but stylish "hybrid" type bike that's comfortable yet fun and sporty for mostly weekend fun rides around town but occasional light gravel, dirt/mud, and 10+ mile trips on paved trails. Any other bikes I should consider? I do tend to favor the slightly lesser mainstream brands as opposed to specialized, trek, giant, etc. Currently, I have a Priority L train gear patrol edition but not really liking the brakes or internal hub gears. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Also I’m 5,10 & ride large on 2 bikes ,I fit medium surly frames , would a matin large suit me better or a medium? Surly preamble has 8 speed dt but has a spacer to go 1x11 but tire clearance is max at 42 , please let me know on sizing , I live in Chicago & I can’t find a dealer that has this in stock , great review 😎

Ride will be on and off road do you think with some bigger tyres and new bars this could match the surly as a dependable and comfy bike packing rig? In the Uk where I am the bridge club is about £1700 and this 2023 muirwoods is around £800 so the price is different is massive! Thanks for the informative video

I think the Muirwoods should suit what you're describing really well. I would personally prefer the Muirwoods over the Surly even if pricing was more comparable because of the slacker geometry and a 29" wheels (both for comfort and a bit of extra stability). There are probably some fine details on the Surly that may be a bit more refined but that is more than made up for by the price and flexibility.

Do you this would work well as a commute bike with a kid on a backseat? I've got a Thule RideAlong that clamps to the frame. The Muirwoods is checking a lot of my boxes: steel frame, disk brakes, and the gearing doesn't look bad for going up hills either.
@karlmeyer9214

I have the Thule Yepp Nexxt mini on mine and it works great. I would have no qualms throwing a back seat on mine, either! As for the gearing, I did a 20-mile ride yesterday with about 1,500 ft elevation gain, 9% maximum slope, and 20lbs of cargo, and the gearing was just about perfect. Any steeper with a loaded bike and I’ll have to get stronger, though haha.

@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 5 ай бұрын
I think you have 2 separate issues: moving over to a bike with a 1x drivetrain & if the Muirwoods would work for mountain bike trails. If the 1x drivetrain is really appealing, the Marin Bobcat Trail 4 could be a good option and it is less expensive than the Muirwoods. If your local trails are really smooth and your attitude while riding is kinda low speed cruizy, the Muirwoods could work but you'd likely want to put as wide and treaded a tire on as possible to get good traction and a little extra comfort from a wider/softer tire.

I would go with the Muirwoods. I think its toughness and potential for larger tires would be a bonus (just in case) and having hydraulic discs would be appreciated in light trail conditions. Geometry is also a little less "cruisery" if that makes sense.

@BikeBrosBikeShop

@@raularraiga9729 The Kentfield is a more pronounced upright position but the Muirwoods isn't too bent over either - it is still designed around casual positioning, not too leaned forward. For the broken wrist, you could potentially do things like adding higher rise handlebars to the Muirwoods (if you decided it was needed) and also large volume /soft tires to minimize the shock transmitted up to your hands.

@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 2 ай бұрын
The Muirwoods is taller in the front, longer rear end than the DSX. This will make the Muirwoods a bit more relaxed, both in its handling and rider comfort. Unless you're exceptionally light I wouldn't be too concerned by the weight Unless you're serious about pathway Strava segments and a few seconds of extra speed is important.

@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 11 ай бұрын
I love both bikes but for the charity ride and if "speedy" commuting was the goal I'd choose the DSX. DSX will be lighter and more sporty. Muirwoods is heavier, puts the rider in a slightly more relaxed position and may suit longer (loaded with gear?) Rides where comfort is more important than power. Realistically I think there's a lot of cross over and people will end up choosing the bike that looks the nicest in their eyes.
