I have the the 2020 Pajero Sport. It pulls my 2.5 ton caravan effortlessly and very well uphill even with cruise control. I can use the paddle shift to change down to hold trans in 7th gear for high way towing or push the shift leaver over left to lock that gear in and quickly select a lower gear while 4WDriving. Sand, Gravel, Mud and Snow selections are excelent. I love all these features. Also I have put this vehicle through some of the toughest 4WDRIVING Ihave ever done in the flinders rangers up steep rock climbs and on the beaches and sand dunes at Lincoln and Coffin bay national parks all with factory tyers and no lift or modifications. In this area the Pajero Sport shines. The down side is that it is cramped for driver leg room if your a tall person at 6ft 1 in as I am which makes long trips uncomfortable. Economy is good around town and motor and drive train are very strong. Yes a little more ground clearance would be an advantage.

TBH honest, it is a little rough on bouncy bitumen roads. Certainly no confidence in the way it bounces around.

The "Sport" badge is for the school run sport challenge that these vehicles compete in every day.. can you enter a school zone at 110km/h, stop in the bus zone to let 5 kids out, do a U-turn over double lines in front of the pedestrian crossing nearly taking out the lollipop man, then take off foot to the floor.... without getting booked police. Winner gets to Dan Murphys at opening time to pickup the first wine sale for the day.

Hi Paul, I bought myself a paj sport 2021. I love it! My info-tainment doesn't lag as much as yours did (maybe because my model doesn't have NAV), but I found the simplistic controls section very nice. I hate having overly complex dash and controls area. I agree it is a bit scratchy and could use a pretty up with some texture in the cabin. I bought a 5 seater for the partner, dog and I to travel around australia a bit in comfort whilst also zipping around town for business. The offroad capability really does give these expensive cars a run for their money, puts a few to shame for sure. So far, the reliablitity of this car is outstanding, I have not yet hit a single issue. It is argumentative and I'd love to turn the beeps and noises off, but they are VERY handy when you actually need them. I'd also like to mention there is a solid lag when putting your foot down which can cause some strife, but if you aren't worried about messing with your 10 year warranty, you can get that tuned out. Lastly, there is some aftermarket mods for this vehicle, but it is quite limited; the curved roof with solid rails limits the roof rack options, their are very few barworks that fit nicely and the spare wheel makes having rear cargo a non-option. This car is like a jack of all trades, a master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one. Thanks for the vid and all the tests.

Get a throttle controller mate. Idk why the manufacturers make the electronic throttle body so late to respond maybe to achieve fuel efficiency. Make sure your turbo is getting a proper flow of oil, maybe get a turbo timer and put a catch can to keep the intercooler clean. Did an intercooler clean recently and made a massive difference, makes power smoother, accelerates smoother and is quicker to respond.

I bought a GLS with the deluxe pack, in my opinion it’s the best value for money in the range, all you really miss is heated seats, digital display and front parking sensors but outside that it’s really the same car. I’ve thrown the TJM book at ours to upgrade the woeful factory suspension and put on a bull bar and snorkel. My dad and father in law both have the new d-max and bt50 respectively, and they are identical with power output to the Pajero Sport. We really umm’d and ahh’d about this or the mu-x and landed on this mainly for the shorter delivery timeframe, near 7k cheaper price tag and 10 year warranty/ capped price servicing. Day to day it’s a good car, showing it’s age a bit, the engine is a noisy old lass but generally its comfy and very easy to drive on the road, tackles nearly anything off road with ease and does exactly what it says it will in the brochure. Downsides are, the boot is deceptively small, put a pram and dog crate in the boot and it’s nearly all gone, and the second row leg room isn’t great for adults but is excellent for two kids seats. The only other thing is the gearbox is a bit fussy and I find it drops all the way to 7th or 8th quickly at relatively low speeds (60 - 80km/h) (obviously some sort of fuel saving ECU programming) but driving with the paddle shifters is great and definitely a must off road. We’re generally happy with it and plan on keeping it for some time yet. Looking forward to seeing the next gen hopefully next year!

Took delivery of a white GSR in April last year. Did 1500KM real quick to get the first complimentary service done. In May did 6900kms in the NT with 3 other couple's towing a 1600kg forward fold camper. Note that this is my first Toorak Tractor. Vf2 Sv6 got sold. Overtook triples ok and at 130km per hour it drove ok. At one stage my dash showed average speed of 121 while I was at 130. Didn't find a single road that had sine wave roads. Main reason I bought it is because of the superior 4wd system compared to Fortuner and MUX. Prado was out of the question due to ridiculous price. It has the safety technology I need and is very comfortable. Yes at the end of it's build period but all the bugs have been fixed because of this. My mate waited 13 months for his higher tec MUX and it mirrors don't fold in. Go figure.

The awd is a no brainer plus it's superior off road to all in it's class. Prado is overrated honestly. It's pretty damn good off road and it tows well because it's heavy but that's about it. Interior nothing special, ride nothing special and reliability nothing special.

I like the way you put it, there's a trade-off but the Japs know their market and thats why their seemingly dated formula has lasted to date. I drive a Toyota in South Africa and they are built to last in this environment with the least pain of ownership. The Pajero sport is not my cup of tea but it ticks a lot of boxes depending on ones needs.

On the hill climb first time, having the rear diff lock active was the issue. That disables all traction control, hence the front wheels didn't have any control. Rear diff lock is best for offset holes and bigger ruts, but an even track hill like that is best and easily climbed with no rear diff lock active and just letting the traction control do it's thing (especially in Rock mode where wheel slip is most limited).

That's good news as I have ordered the GLX which doesn't have rear diff lock. I won't be doing real off roading, but I will be towing a light caravan, about 1 tonne. Reversing on to slippery sites with the van should be fine without the diff lock. I currently have a Ford XR6, which has loads of power for the highway, but spins rear wheels on wet grass.

And furthermore, with a GLX - with no rear diff lock available, it would have been good to run the hill test with and without rear diff lock to compare the performance with and without.

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I’ve got a 2022 GLS model. I absolutely love it. Around the city, on long highway trips it’s comfortable & good on fuel driven correctly. IT’s capability off road I think is really good. I’ve done lots of bush touring, rock climbing & river crossings. Only thing I’ve done is add a snorkel for piece of mind. I’m really happy with the car. I did lots of research & tested many others cars before I decided & the Pajero Sport won me hands down.

Can you please test drive a Toyota Fortuner Crusade on this track? Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is worth the money. You still get a very good OFF-ROAD capable 7 seater wagon. The Off-Road Traction control system is good. Price tag is very good. Reliability is good. You can drive the wagon in 4H on sealed surfaces. Why pay a bigger price tag in the competition when you can have the same features with the Pajero Sport. What else would a working class family need for city, school and weekend runs? Yes, the Pajero Sport misses out on some “FANCY” features and the engine might be a little bit less powerful than the rest of the competition. But the Pajero Sport still gets the job done, pretty well. The price tag, engine and gearbox reliability, cabin comfort and space should put this back on the shopping list.

not sure if hill decent kicked in as rear diff lock still stayed activated. It's one thing that annoys me a little with this system, changing the modes take a little longer to kick in and in some case I have to drive few yards ahead for modes to lock in. One good thing I found that a decent set of All terrain tyres can really help. I got the Falken wildpeak AT3W and its a beast of gripper and made heaps of difference as well for me. But overall love this car, been a good journey, safer on the road , its comfortable and makes you feel in total control. The engine can definitely use a little more of a punch for sure as you said.

This car has the best 4x4 system in its class, very quite ride at cruising speed on the freeway and fuel efficiency is up there with the best in class considering the size of the vehicle. I like that the 4x4 mode can be selected even on sealed surfaces. This car is simple with no unnecessary technology because it is built to last. The suspension is soft tuned for more comfort than handling which is ok considering this car is not a Ferrari. Surprisingly the pajero sport excellent 8 speed auto box is sourced from Toyota owned Aisin, sharing it with the Lexus LX570 and Land Cruiser 5.7L, which are a class above the fortuner. Concerning value for money in the class, theres no better vehicle than the Pajero-Sport. The car has some minor shortcomings though as it could do with a physical volume knob, a more softer steering, standard 360 degree view camera across the range and a push button rear seat folding mechanism. Anyone looking to buy a rugged ladder frame suv should atleast test drive the Pajero-Sport.

Will get my PS next week. I have done a lot of research before I order one. I love its exterior and reliability. The only two points I am not satisfied are infotainment and steering wheel. With Carplay/Android Auto, the infotainment is acceptable. The steering wheel is really heavy. For the power output, it is fine for me as it is just a family SUV with a good off-road capability, not a hot hatch. It seems that PS has a very good resale value which is good for us.

Matie, it's called the high country, just nth/east of Melbourne last time I looked at a map. It's close and far more interesting than his test track. Paul's unlikely to give public access to his test track, as it would be chopped up in no time by 4X4 enthusiast turning it into a true 4X4 test loop, something to truly test off-road credentials. This loop doesn't even challenge a 4X4 drive line, they are designed for more challenging terrain than this loop. His old loop was more suited for off road credentials, problem was he wasn't up to task, didn't know what to engage etc, so truly capable vehicles would fail when it was operator error which made him look silly 🥴, hence the less challenging loop, well that's my take on his practise of testing 4X4 operation. Recall watching him trying to get a big chev thru his old loops moguls in auto 4X4. In that mode the centre diff is open (suited to sealed surface only). He needed to select 4H (button on the dash from memory) to lock centre diff and the big chev would have ate those moguls up and spat them out the exhaust pipe as a snack 😁. Recall him testing a GWM Cannon not even knowing it had a cross country mode to select/engage. That feature engaged would have made a plethora of difference. If you're going to evaluate a vehicle you need to know how to operate its features before testing/failing and then condemning it. Read "how to operate" before saying it can't do that. Paul, I'm curious, last time I reverse parked or witnessed a vehicle parking, it was a measured practise of little throttle application. Similarly, reversing out a drive, again a measured practise with little throttle application. Perplexed by full throttle reverse gear testing, in what world does that occur? What's the purpose? I'm sure it's not in the operating manual as well, it's just horning from any prospective. Stick to road testing and have a true 4X4 enthusiast evaluate the off road capabilities on a true 4X4 loop.

Ours is going great at 2 years, 30,000km. I find it really comfortable on gravel roads at 60 or 80km/h, and it never struggles on any hills on the freeway at 110km/h. But where it really comes into its own its having full-time 4H and being able to dip into low range when towing in slippery/muddy conditions.

The plastic dashboard is actually a good thing. When do you feel the softness of the dashboard? Never. When we put a dash mat in our falcon which is really soft. Softest dash I’ve ever felt, the people who put it in glued it down and now that I took it off, the glue won’t come off and has left yellow marks in the black leather. The spot I tried getting it off on just tore. So from now on I’m gonna make sure that my dashes are plastic

Just some information on overtaking from somebody that routinely overtakes car/caravan combos in road trains. There is an art to overtaking in unresponsive vehicles. You need to anticipate when theres a straight bit of road or overtaking opportunity coming up, drop back off the car in front and use that distance to gain speed before you reach the car again so that your speed difference is considerable when you move into the oncoming lane and your exposure time is short. Power really not required, just good driving.

I had one of these, which we purchased when it launched 7 or so years ago. At the time, the value proposition for equipment, technology and overall value for money was really really good. Since then, the price has increased, but the value proposition has stayed pretty stationary. Now it's starting to look like the kind of car the lancer was before it was discontinued. Reliable, but boring.

about the only thing shit with this car is the horn lol. no offence but these reviews make every car sound pretty bad, like i got put off by every single model of the same vehicle type because of these reviews. after the driving the 2022 PS i came back a week later and bought the black GSR in the display room, can't fault it. it'll go pretty much anywhere you want it to with ease and it'll be comfortable whilst doing it. i have 2 bulging discs in my lower back and can do an 8hr drive with fishing stops along the way, with minimal pain that only comes on in the last hour or two of the trip. my last two cars were a 2003 falcon and a 2003 323 hatch, comparing them to thie PS is stupid but the PS is bliss in comparison. all the safety features work really well, the ACC is awesome and very fuel efficient, the car is comfortable and easy to drive, i find the cameras are totally fine, i can see everything and i love having them. if i could afford a prado i probably would have bought one but at the same time, it really is just as good when it comes to my lifestyle and the price difference is a no brainer. after putting 11,500km i still love it and definitely suggest test driving one if you're in the market. there's a really good community group on facebook and i've actually seen less big issues on that page than the Prado group i'm in. the only bad thing about this vehicle is the intercooler hoses failing at random intervals, there seems to be no minimum life in them and just about everyone upgrades to silicone hoses to avoid problems. i've seen the hoses fail at 13,000km and some didn't fail til well over 100,000km. $300 on top of the price of the car is nothing for a very capable, safe, and comfortable 4x4. once you get used to the way the throttle works the gearbox works quite smooth, and you can actually get a fair amount of control over when it changes using your right foot
