Make TRs that work. I shouldn't have to use a hammer to get a plug to go into the receptacle. Thanks for the updates, we do appreciate you helping us stay ahead of the changes.

I've learned if you favor the neutral side of the plug it goes into the receptacle easier. Usually just the cheaper ones that are an issue

I agree that its just makes extra work to carry non tr receptacles. Been doing that for years. Actually doing that with gfci protection for years also. Until covid it only added a few dollars to a circuit.

Coach, thank you as always. I understand the push for TR's, but the US receptacles have one cardinal flaw. If the plug is not pushed in all the way, there is exposed metal under voltage, powered by a circuit fused at as high as 50A sometimes. It would be much safer not only to have shutters, but also to have the receptacle's face recessed, so as not to be able to "see" the plug prongs unless the plug is completely disengaged from the receptacle holes. European receptacles are like that. The closest we have to that in the US are the recessed recepts for behind the TV, but they are not available in the TR variety.

another solution would be for manufacturers to insulate the first 1/4 inch of every plug, like in Britain
@pfcrow
@pfcrow Жыл бұрын
@@claytoncallaway6412 They should start by requiring that only on vacuum cleaners, since their plugs are used so much more often than anything else. Then they can over time add more things to the required list until the list is over a page long and confusing, then just require it everywhere. :) Seriously, I think that's a good idea, but they should look into what it would change in the manufacturing cost.

Remarks about "not going away" is a good verbal clue that what we're discussing is such a bad idea that it *ought to* go away but the powers that be cling to it never the less. The same effort and expense devoted to this would be better devoted to teaching parents to protect outlets that small children can access-that and a number of other risks.
@BariumCobaltNitrog3n

Changing a few words in a book requires very little effort or expense. It's not surprising that there are still people that would rather see children burned and electrocuted than install a slightly different outlet. How is it so difficult to install? What exactly is bad about this concept? The NEC should be teaching parents what now? Do you hate handrails and porch lights too?

@BariumCobaltNitrog3n

All the people complaining about TR outlets are just too weak to push a plug into the holes. And WTF you don't even have to use the things, just do your job and install them, they are literally exactly the same.

Is this change data driven? For example, 3k kids die each year from non-tamper resistant outlet shocks. Or, is this a way to create work/jobs? It may be more practice to wear a suit (plastic) of armor and sit on a couch the rest of our lives! I do appreciate your time and educating videos that have helped me and your citing of the regulations, which impressed my uncle who worked for a power company.

Well, my daughter took her "safety scissors" and cut a lamp cord. When it tripped the breaker, she hid under a table. But, there's limited defense against a determined kid. At least the safety scissors were "insulated" in that they had plastic handles over the metal.

The 5 feet and a half would be a plug for a wall mounted TV that's the only plug I can think of that would be in a dwelling. Also I hate them, for the fact that customers complain like no other about some that just simply wont let you plug something in. I also hate that the code book is dictated by manufactures like EATON having a say in what can be used and not used each year. The cheese grader company hooked up with the band aid company now. I also cant understand why the electricians at lest in my area are required to know and pass an electrical test when inspectors from what I've seen don't know the code book what so ever and don't need to take the same test. They will tell a builder that's out of code all day. Then you got to get the code book out and tell them show me were it says this is out of code please. Only for them to turn around and say no no its within code. LOL

The thing that gets me, the exceptions are only places where you plug something in once and it stays plugged in for years at a time. The only legitimate gripe about TR receptacles is that it's slightly more annoying to fiddle with to get the plug inserted. Who cares about that for something that gets touched once a decade? The pain of TR is in the wall outlets that get used all the time and that's not going away. The fact of the matter is that basically everyone knows about some incident happening with a child of some close relation screwing around and trying to stick something into an outlet. Child covers do nothing at all for outlets in use and all too often people with kids forget to replace them after they unplug something from an outlet accessible by a child. Just the other day I was pulling my kid out from under their bed and noticed that the outlet under there didn't have a cover in it because months earlier we had guests sleeping in that room and they used it to charge their phone at night. Non-TR is obsolete at this point, just slap them everywhere and deal with the headache, unless the whole country gets behind changing everything to a new safer plug design we just have to put up with it. You can't ever expect kids to not be curious and at some point for most outlets out there there will be a time when an unsupervised kid is around them.

it's amazing to me that there are people who will go to such extreme lengths to avoid a simple safety measure. TR receptacles work so much better than all the other "childproofing" options.
@pfcrow
@pfcrow Жыл бұрын
And also TR receptacles are vastly cheaper than the childproofing options. Spending a few cents more per receptacle in a house is cheaper for the homeowner than buying a single package of annoying plastic outlet plugs, and those plugs are never used consistently, and some kids will find them fascinating to play with.

Question you threw away the tamper or non tamper receptacles? got lost there. Thanks
@AndrewMerts
@AndrewMerts Жыл бұрын
He threw out the non TR receptacles because a somewhat minor mixup cost him a decent bit of trouble having to replace them all. You can use a TR receptacle anywhere, not so much with the non TR receptacles. Anywhere that you'd care to have to fiddle with the shutters on a regular basis is a location where you're all but guaranteed to be required to use a TR and for the others where you still technically aren't required to, it's going to get plugged in and stay plugged in for years so it really makes no difference if you just put in TR across the board to eliminate the hassle and risk of having to redo a bunch of work to pass inspection.

Why are we installing tamper proof receptacles when it would be safer and easier to simply use arc fault/ground fault breakers for everything and be done. The NEC is an agency that has no breaks and no supervision. It is clear to me that they are now working for the companies that produce electrical products. Are there any statistics on the number of people electrocuted by dryers and ranges (new GFCI requirement). How many children are killed by putting an object into a receptacle? I never see the statistics that these new requirements are based on. This agency's mission from the start was to prevent fires and hazards. They now think it is to protect stupid against stupid.

Hey, coach ... help me out here. These TR receptacles keep a kid from shoving something in one slot. But if it's only one thing and one slot, how's he going to get shocked? By touching the plate screw? But they WILL allow two things to go in at the same time. The classic image is a fork. [Would have to be missing the two middle tines, but okay. Or maybe a pointy grill fork. That would work.] Now it will short the circuit. And if it was something metal falling across the tines of a plug, well, they were already in there because **two**, right? Will it shock the fork violator? Seems to me current would just jump to the neutral. And if it was two paper clips, well, same thing: **two**. No protection. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I know they are not going away. And I know 'required' does not mean 'has to make sense.' Tell me I'm wrong. Please.

@@ElectricalCodeCoach LOLZ. Meaning, drop the question sheet in the wastepaper box on your way out. Thanks for the answer, though. @BariumCobaltNitrog3n
@BariumCobaltNitrog3n Жыл бұрын
If you are touching the floor or faucet or stove or refrigerator or bathtub or lamp or dirt or almost anything, then you are grounded. You ARE the neutral path to ground. A short circuit contacting BOTH conductors will cause a breaker to open and no one gets hurt. A connection between the current carrying conductor and a human will not immediately (or possibly ever) cause the breaker to trip. You are wrong. If you are right, go ahead and shove a knitting needle into a live receptacle, standing barefoot in the kitchen. Do it. Also, two paper clips? One in each hand. Do that next.
